Ok, I get the fact that the torque (in the garage) is a misprint. It's in Kg/M instead of Lb/Ft, right? But here's the thing: I just bought a Lancer Evolution VII RS, and the hp shows up as 305, not the stated 276! Also, the torque (the misprinted torque) peaks at 2750 RPMs in the garage, not the stated 3000 RPMs.

A lot of people have noticed that EVOs in real life have underrated horsepower, do you think that PD is printing the real life hp values?

Any help you dudes could offer would be great.

Japanese road production cars are limited to a maximum output of 276hp by Japanese law, which is why the dealer screen displays them as producing only 276hp. In actuality though, some vehicles like Skylines, Evo's, etc, do achieve higher marks, as you point out.
It's not a mistake. :sly:

It's not actually law, it's a 'gentlemens agreement'. Germany has a similar one that has cars speed limited to 150mph or something.
Also, car makers only claim to follow this agreement. I believe the R34 Skyline GT-R made something like 320hp, even if it was only rated at 276. This means what GT does is actually realistic; when you're in the dealership they say it has 276hp, but when you buy it and get the figure yourself you find that's not actually true.
I believe Honda anounced plans to produce a car rated at 300hp or above sometime last year, a new Japanese horsepower war was predicted to ensue, but that was the last I heard of it.

oh, my mistake then. I guess the column that i got that from, however long ago it was, was just as uninformed as i am. :sly:

thanks for clearing that up emohawk

Emohawk: Quite right about the German cars.. I've got a book here full of car stuff (bought it at the mall just before Christmas for like $3.. it was in the "super-mega-ultra-bargain-we'll-pay-you-to-take-it" bin). But anyway, it's got factory-released stats in it.. None of the Japanese cars have higher than 280ps (276hp), and none of the German road cars can go any faster than 155mph. According to the book. :)

There are a few exceptions to the German-car thing.. the McMerc and Bugatti, for example, can go faster. But all the other Mercedes and BMW's have the same magical top speed of 155.

For the Bugatti it would be because it is a Fench car maker, albeit owned by Germans...
