Been meaning to get these posted for a while. This is my cockpit and my guest cockpit. Criteria was that these both had to be made on the cheap. Everything here I happened to have around the house with the exception of a few dollars worth of misc. hardware. Here are some key features:

1) Tried making a table for the wheels, but with me in a chair and the wheels attached to a table I always felt "disconnected" from the wheels. So I decided to attach the wheels to the chairs themselves. This helped a lot. First, any small movement in the chair, like me shifting my balance, results in the same movement in the wheel. Second, the vibrations and feedback from the wheels transmits somewhat back into the chairs for added realism.

2) In order to do this, I attached two wheel supports (shelves) directly to the chairs. On one chair, I made the support out of an old fake snowboard (the kind from a toy dept. for kids on the sledding hills), and on the other out of a piece of that cheap white shelving material you get at hardware stores. For access, both chairs have a pin or pins which are removable (just a couple of bolts in one of them, and a drill bit in the other one :-) Removing these pins (on the left) from the support which the wheels are attached to, allows the wheel supports to pivot around a single bolt holding the right-end down, creating a cheap hinge. Note that on both setups you must support the left side while you exit or enter the chair.

3) Pedal resistance on the DFP is lame. I increased it with some bungies. The only difficult part was getting the bungies positioned so that they don't interfere with my feet. I added more resistance to the brake than I did to the accelerator.

4) The screen (sorry for the terrible picture here), is provided by a DLP (digital light projector), giving me an approximate display width of 6 feet. No, I didn't buy this for the GT4. Honest.

5) The chairs I happened to have lying around unused. But both of them I got "free" with some other purchase. The black "leather" one I got free with a purchase of a 35" TV from some horrible super-electronics chain, and the computer chair free with a computer desk. I almost refused them since I didn't need chairs at the time, but I'm glad I didn't as they definitely came in handy for this project.

6) Audio is provided by a 4-speaker surround system with subwoofer.

These are great cockpits to drive in, supremely comfortable!

That's it. Hope you like them.

P.S. Anyone here recognize the other console game-system tucked in behind the PS2 and just to the right of it? You can see part of it in the second photo.

Cool. Good idea with the bungies. Your pedal base is different than mine. Mine doesn't have the cris-cross deal at the bottom. Is that something you did or stock with the DFP? Is it rubberized?

Those are self-sticking rubberized treads which you can pick up at hardware and/or automotive stores. They keep my feet from sliding around. They are inexpensive and can be cut to size with a pair of good scissors.

sweet idea's that's the best use of that snowboard i've seen yet!!! i like the rubberized diamond plate. i use that rubber mesh that goes under a futon to keep the cusion from sliding down, under my wheel. i lay it down then clamp the wheel to the desk with that covering it. no slippage AT ALL!!!!

neat bunggie idea. the only thing i'd warn you about (or ask if it's happening) is these pedals don't seem to like to be pulled sideways like that! have you had the "pedal problem" at all from running that set up?? your gas pedal esp, looks like it's really getting yanked to the side.

A Jaguar if I'm not mistaken....

yup it's the Jag... what a flop that was! i've been there though... Sega CD (oops!) Sega Saturn (foiled again!) hahaha...

i loved Sega though for the time. had the Master System back when NES was banging. then had the Genesis.. skipped the 32x though haha.

(didn't mean to hijack the thread!!) :guilty:

Oh the Jag... such a chunk of change down the drain... I got mine still too, on the shelf right next to my Lynx...

Yeah, but then again, Alien vs. Predator, T2K, and the best dang version of the original DOOM ever made it pretty much worth the $$$ for me. Not to mention the sweet VLM if you bought the CD drive (which I have, but which isn't attached to the system in the photo).

Oh, and yes, that is indeed the Jaguar in the photo!

No problem with the pedals so far (once I got sets without the "pedal bug" in the first place, it took me a total of 5 sets to get 2 that worked), hopefully it will stay that way, although I was a little worried at first about exactly that possibility. They've been this way a couple months so far....

They aren't actually being pulled sideways with much force, and remember that since these are bungie cords, they apply less total pressure when the pedals are "at rest", so the maximum force is only being applied when I'm actually driving. I think the perspective in the photo makes them look like the pedals are being distorted, but they aren't. When you look at them in real life the pedals are as straight as ever.

well... if you want a ghetto-mod other than bungees...
i havn't opened the dfp pedal box yet, as i've only had it a few weeks... no need to mess with it while its still under warrenty;
but i know on my act-labs pedal box, a popular mod involved a simple squash ball.
if you put one in the base under the pedal arm, as you press the brake it was squishing the ball. causing progressive resistance. honestly, it felt almost exactly like the fluid resistance you get from a hydrolic brake system.
springs from garden clippers work great for gas pedal tension.
(both items readily available for under $2)
