It sure helps .. I strip mine down and clean it free from dust about every few months .. I also stand it on a laptop fan (the fan is powered by my laptop as not to draw power from the PS3 which would defeat the object) Plus it is stored on top of the cabinet with a very good cool air circulation.

I tested it on other games after it played up on GT5 and it works without a glitch for 5 hours solid .. So i assume GT5 pushes it to it's max pretty much like C.O.D. does the original PS3's don't seem to like to work to hard .. Pretty much like B tec drivers.
Although now my 60gb is packed away for keeps not to be used again.

just remove the hard drive and with a bit of luck put it into a new ps3 system? i have had 3 fatboys since ps3 release day and all have suffered ylod. all 3 havent damaged the hard drive! i also have my saves on a external hard drive incase of this tragic event happening :)

The HDD can't be transfered and the game save is locked , the only thing to do is buy a new PS3 and fix the old one then transfer via the ethernet cable the whole contents of the old HDD onto the new one. But that will cost extra money to fix the old one. You may choose to just play the game again on the new one.

My old ps3 YLOD'ed ages ago, but I got it running for about half a year longer, by doing the towel trick (Wrapping it up in towels so only rear vents show, then leave a hairdryer blowing hot air into the Ps3 for about an hour, then leave to cool - and you have around an extra month of play time!) But in the long term its screwed.

OMG im sorry I was told by a guy at gamestop...

I'm afraid to say that years of reading various fora leads me to believe that, like PC World in the UK, the Gamestop Guy's words aren't worth the air that they're... errm... written on. :D

anyway of transfering my system backup to new ps3 without using the ethernet? or will i just have to download the GT5 v1.05 again?

if I understand right...you can simply transfer it (once you have dl 1.05 to your new ps3) via a usb drive or external HDD. As long as you are signed in to the same PSN as your original game save, it should transfer over? That is my understanding atleast. I believe your USB or External HD has to be formated for fat32?

Mine did the exact same thing on my fatty ps3 i was already 40% done with A spec and a similar B spec... I almost went crazy. I tried turning it back on and it wouldnt just like yours.

So i slammed it from its vertical position back to horizontal onto a hard table then let it cool off. Then it turned back on like normal :-/ So i bought a new PS3 and did the transfer. Look at those Chinese video game places. My friends did the same thing and he got it fixed with the heat gun method for the GPU for $60. To me thats worth the time I put into the game.

Now I have a slim PS3 :-X
