while trying out the SLS top gear challenge,

my ps3 froze and I tried turning it on.. I got nothing but blinking yellow light/red light..

and I didn't create an back up of it.. I had 1000's + cars, 1500+ paints plus chrome line cars..

does that mean I lost all my data? is there any way I can retrieve it? what can I do?

does anyone know where I can fix it in Northern California region?

thanks.

Unless your extremely unlucky you can get your data back. You can take it to a shop and get it fixed or do it yourself. Look up the fix by Gilksy on youtube if you decide to do it yourself. Good luck and when you get it back dont forget to back up! If you cant find video let me know and ill find the link for you, this happened to me a few weeks back and I got my data back.

Sounds like the HDD is broken.

Unless you've backed up your profile on a USB stick recently , then i'd say welcome to Day 1 Level 0 A-Spec again.....

Sorry.

yea thats ylod it doesnt effect your hdd tho i got it just after i started a new game of gt5 on my ps3 but if you take it to a repair place get it reballed not reflowed as with a reflow you will probly get maybe 6 months out of it then itll ylod again but your data will be ok as ylod is the gpu and has nothing to do with the hdd so your data should be safe

Craigslist normally has folks that can reball it, as someone said a reflow is not a long term fix. Should run you about $50 bucks or so:tup: & take maybe a day or two.

As a rule make sure you back up your stuff!

So I just got the replies from the shops.

Most of them said it can be fixed but will run from $75-$90 dollars.

One of the shops will do it for $90 and I can have it back tomorrow. I'm leaning towards this one.

My other question is, how do I back up all my data? How big of an hard driver would I need for it?

Once I get it fixed, should I stick around with the 80 gb? I really like the 4 USB ports, sd card reader. That's something the new ones doesn't have.

I worry for my PS3. It's an old 80 gb model that turns 4 this Christmas. I always backup just in case.

It's the small game save file you have to copy. It's no more the size of a short song.

As for space, I'd say get a new PS3 if you can really afford it. Or, just get another PS3 once your 80gb stops working a second time. I waited about 10 times because I always did Gilsky's ylod fix.

👍

I have the cash for the an new PS3 but the one I currently have shares some good memories with me..

hopefully tomorrow I get it back, the shop I took it to have an 1 day turn around time..

thanks mates.

My ps3 just YLOD yesterday. I'm following re-flow from Gilsky, hope it works for me. I'm planning to get the slim this coming thanksgiving. Can I switch my old harddrive(320gb) to the new slim ps3?

Great news mate.

I got her back and she is running well. All my cars and paints are there along with some photos of me and my gf.

To everyone, thank you for all your help.

Back it up while you can. It will crash soon. If you did fix it yourself deal.

I also got a YLOD during the SLS challenge. Seems to be a PS3 Killer :P
I send it to someone who will repair it (hopefully) and i hope to keep my data.

i think the answer is BUT the hdd will be reset , so all the data will be gone , so back every stuff up before changing it

Chromeline and stealth cars can be re-downloaded if you didn't receive them via trade. As for the PS3 I've had the YLOD (twice  ) and you can try and fix it yourself, take it too a shop or exchange it for free for a repaired one although with the latter you do lose all of your data if it isn't backed up.

I reflowed my PS3 and the HDD was fine, still had all data on it.

Thanks for the replies. Just finished re-assembling my ps3, so far it's working good. HDD did not reset but just the date and time. I still have all the data in there and ,yes, I'm keeping a back-up of my GT5 data.

Hey. My brother got that too. And he got it fixed for $40 here in Southern California. The biggest tip I can give you is look on Craigslist. There's plenty of people.

Sorry to hear it happened again. Tell them to clean it well and to put GOOD THERMAL PASTE!!! Cheap bastards don't put the good kind. Next time you get it, back up the save. Your warranty better cover it.

:ouch::ouch: Perhap sget a new one?

Whilst I have everyone's attention I have a question:

I have release date PS3 that got the dreaded YLOD back in '07 (it is release date 60gb) but it has been running perfectly since, not a problem at all. It has been upgraded to 750gb and cleaned regularly BUT I too worry about it getting a bit long in the tooth... does anyone here have the same model and if so have you had issues with it the older it gets?

yes I do back up my saves 👍

If I had a launch PS3 I wouldn't still be using it. That thing will sell for a lot someday ;)

2 of my friends have a 60 gig. They both got the yellow light. It's just that model. The ventilation wasn't great. EBay a intercooler and buy it. It should be like $10-$20.

It sells for a lot now! I am not fussed with it being used, it is my baby so it won't ever be going anywhere and if it does break down I will get it fixed... Big ol' clunky thing that it is was the very first thing that I purchased after I split with the exwife, to date it still symbolises my freedom hahaha!

Cheers for that, I had one but it was terrble and I never bothered again, perhaps there are better ones out now.

one more Q, since mine is modded to 750gb would that make it worth more or less do you think?

Logic says it would be worth more but some people get all funny about original stuff getting modded but it is not "chipped" or anything like that, I just made it larger so I did not have to constantly delete game data which was driving me crazy.

I'm with originality. So if you were selling it, I wouldn't buy it. But people are different. Also, keep your ps3 on wood or tile. Never on a carpet. (If its on the floor) also, buy those compressed air things to clean keyboards and spray inside one a week. The first time you use it, you'll see dust fly out. Everything electronical has dust. But at least your cleaning it some.
