I'm with originality. So if you were selling it, I wouldn't buy it. But people are different. Also, keep your ps3 on wood or tile. Never on a carpet. (If its on the floor) also, buy those compressed air things to clean keyboards and spray inside one a week. The first time you use it, you'll see dust fly out. Everything electronical has dust. But at least your cleaning it some.

dude I am too but I weighed up the cons of having to delete data on the reg to the pro's of having nearly a terabyte to play with and being able to record TV to it in addition to stuffing it with vids, tunes, pics etc AND still having 300gb left... by that time I threw originality out the window and have not looked back!

yep it is on wood AND I do have a compressed air can BUT I have never thought to spray the beast with it, I will do that in the morning when BOB finishes the 24hr Sarthe race that he is currently doing... for 200% bonuses - level 40 Bspec fast approacheth :crazy::crazy::crazy:
 
I have an all-black original 20GB! Got YLOD last year and got STUPID Sony to fix it for $175... My friend's 40GB quit shortly after and he traded it in to Gamestop and got a slim model for like $140.
 
LoL BoB will level up fast. I guess I don't think of it how you said it. The memory thing. But me, I have a lot of friends with PS3's and i bought an external hard drive. That way, I can carry it to put movies and shows and believe when I say 1 TV is an insane amount LoL but I see what you mean about pros and cons.

the place where I got it fixed carries an 90 days warranty.

hopefully I get it back tomorrow before work..

good news though, I backed up on Monday night..

My ps3 just YLOD yesterday. I'm following re-flow from Gilsky, hope it works for me. I'm planning to get the slim this coming thanksgiving. Can I switch my old harddrive(320gb) to the new slim ps3?

I actually did this when I bought a new slim. When you put the 320gb into the slim it will need to be formatted. You can back up first to a USB drive, but that will only work for some saves. Some game saves cannot be backed up (eg. dragonage).

There is a feature called "data transfer utility" which can copy everything. What you'll have to do is link your ps3's according to the instructions, then copy from your old ps3 (320gb) to your new slim (120gb). Then, take the 320gb out and set it off to the side. Now put an extra HDD you aren't using into your old slim, the one that originally came with your old ps3 works good for this, I'll assume its 60gb. Now link the ps3's again and transfer everything from the slim (120gb) to your old fat model, with the 60gb hard drive in it. Now take the 120gb out of your slim and put the 320gb hdd in its place. Finally, link the ps3's one last time and transfer everything from the 60gb now in your fat model to the 320gb that should now be in the slim, and your good to go.

Bob is awsome, I have 4 all >lvl 34 and one at 40 with 2 undefeated and 3 lost only one race - it's an army of Schumacher spec BoB's!

I tried an external drive but it failed to work, I was unaware how to reformat it so I bit the bullet and paid $300 for a complete service, clean and uber memory upgrade haha. Like I said though dude I agree with originality and the decision was not easy, but now I have no regrets!

with the spray can I have a /\/(.)(.)B question: Do I remove the cover or just spray through the vents?

Sorry to hear that. You might try fixing it yourself, if it happens after the warranty runs out anyway. Besides saving money and knowing its done with all the care your ps3 deserves, you'll also be able to clean all the components completely.

I just did the reflow 2 weeks ago and it cost me $5 for thermal paste, thats it. Works fine again, its even quieter than ever with the silver based compound.

If anyone does this be careful of the optical port. After finally getting the motherboard exposed I looked down and found the housing of the optical port laying there loose on the pool table I was working on. The plastic pins holding it to the board had snapped, and it had fallen away from the internal working pieces of the port, which remained intact and connected to the board. I picked up the black square plastic housing and popped it back over the little diode thing, but its kinda loose now. I'm not even sure at what stage of disassembly it came off, so just be careful.

Anyone here had the misfortune of running a bspec enduro set to finish when ya arrive home from work only to find the power blacked out thus robbing BoB of 9 hours of his life & creds & exp? Happened to me yest :ouch:
 
Well the reflow I did myself lasted about 30 days before I got another YLOD. Funny thing is the system has only been on about 30 minutes at a time, except for when the 2.0 update came out, which took over 2 hours to download. It was only on about 5 minutes when the YLOD happened the second time.

Used a blowdryer pointed throught the back to bring it back to life. Youtube video said to do it for 15 minutes, but I stopped after 12 when I noticed the plastic exhaust ducts inside melting and warping.

Bottom line: If your 6-year old PS3 takes a *&^% its time to accept that the launch systems just weren't up to the expected 10-year life span.

No but I've finished plenty of B-spec races and license tests only to watch the car slow down to pace speed and drive another lap or two with no race results screen show up before pressing the PS button and selecting "quit game", only to have to do the race or test over.
 
A blow dryer simply does not get hot enough. Do it the correct way! I've done this dozens of times. It's so simple!

Did you back it up this time? Once the YLOD or RLOD pops up...It will do it again after a reflow. I did a reflow myself along with a complete cleaning and she has been going for a year strong. I just had my other 2nd gen FAT get YLOD for the first time and have not fixed it yet. I decided to go buy a 120g Slim model. Im really liking i as its much more quiet and compact. Seems to not process GT5 quite as fast but not by much. You should look into it. Then reflow you old one yourself..its easy, no need to pay for it.

I might go down to best buy and buy the 320 gb from them..

my other question, will i have to dl 2.02 again with the new system?

Yep..it sucks. Hook it up to a LAN wire....wireless will take FOREVER!!!

BTW..coming from past experiences, ensure that the PS3 you get is ACTUALLY new when you get it from Best Buy. This has happened 3 time to me (one time being a PS3) from 3 different Best Buys. Call Sony and run the barcode deal on the back through them and they will make sure its not preowned.
 
I just called the shop where I took it to..

they will repair it but is going to cost some money.. however, he will give it another warranty of 90 days..

that's pretty bad.. I did not knew about that..

now is the decision, A. go back and pay the cash to have it reflow or B. go buy an new system..

my other question is, does that mean I will lost all the new tickets?

I would defiantly not pay to have it fixed again. You can do it yourself. I would go buy a new one for the reliability. Then, you can fix your fat model as a 2nd system (extra bedroom or something) or sell it.

As for the tickets...Not sure which ones your talking about. If your talking about the ones that came with the most recent update...I would assume you could get them back but cant say 100%. Any DLC or Stealth cars can be re-downloaded from your PSN account after GT5 is fully updated to 2.02. You will aslo have to create new tabs for all your cars once you get GT5 all up an running as they will be messed up. IDK why it does this when you transfer save data but....Its easy just takes some time.
 
Reflowing is a waste of time as far as Im concerned. Unless you dont mind doing it over and over again. I did mine, then thought I'd be alright, since I cleaned it good and used top of the line thermal paste. Not much time later (probably less then 10 hours), it was back to ylod. Now since Im one of those people that is too attached to their fatty, I will be having it reflowed. Then hopefully that will be the end of that. Just like the look of the fatty better, not to mention the better buttons and more options. I even bought a second fatty for 20 bucks that needes an hdd. Its actually the one ive been using lately, and every once in a while it doesnt recognize its own hdd. A few minutes of restore gets it back though. Also, thank goodness for psn plus auto-backup!

it is pretty tempting with the best buy deal though.. comes with an $50 dollar gift card.. but I wish it was like the xbox where it comes with an $100 dollars gift card..
 
Don't get Sony to fix it(sorry Sony!).
Check out some classifieds such as Craigslist.
I've had mine repaired twice: Once for $59 with a 30 day warranty, and another for $40 with a 90 day warranty. Most of the people doing the repairs will either be in computer stores or just in their house.

There is plenty of good DIY tutorials on YouTube. That is what I used. Like I said, my 3rd gen has been going for a long time. I dont use it as often though...its upstairs in the bedroom.

Seems that some reflows last a bit, and others dont. IDK if that has to do with the person doing it, or the condition of the hardware itself.
 
When the first time it happened, I called Sony and they wanted like $130 to fix it.. and I was like, I can spend an extra hundred and get an new one..

I found a few videos on it, but I might have to buy an new one as sad as it sounds...

I really do miss the sd card reader on the old ones..

1. remove any disc you have in the blu-ray.
2. turn off system.
3. turn off switch on back.
4. while pressing the "eject" button, turn switch on back to "on".
5. say "I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry, but I had to do it to prevent ylod" to your wife as she screams about all the dust in the air.

I will also occasionally use my shop vac and suck dust out of it, keeps the wife happier than when I reverse the fan and blow it into the air.

will i get my gt auto coupons back when I install gt5 to the new ps3? and tickets too ie lvl 2,3,18,19,20?

GUYS!!! I had a ylod on my release date 80gb a year ago. Sony refused to acknowledge that the ylod even existed. I told them to google or youtube it and they would see it was for real!. Well, out of warranty so I was out of luck. I just bought myself a new slim. Well just last month I called sony and mentioned to them that I had an 80gig paperweight collecting dust.. This time the rep told me they could repair it for $150 or trade it in for a new 120gig new slim model for $99. So I did, now have a Ps3 for my bedroom. Just letting you all know... $99 for a new (not refurbished) PS3.

The GT Auto tickets come with the update so I would assume yes...you should get them back. If you had those lvl 2,3,18,19, and 20 tickets when you last backed up you save then yes..they will still be there. If you received those tickets, or some, after you backed it up, then no....they will not be there. Only the ones prior to....
