how do you back up the data??????? i never knew how to?
I went and bought a thumb drive. Stick the thumb drive in the PS3, go to your saved game data on the PS3 main page, select the GT5 data, (I believe) press the triangle button to bring up the options, select "copy", it will bring up a couple places to copy to, then finally select the external thumb drive option and it will copy onto the drive. Next time you want to update that copy on your thumb drive, do the same thing and agree to override the original copy. Thumb drives are cheap and you dont require a very much space.

I thought everyone knew how to have the fan run in reverse to clean itself out, but haven't seen it mentioned here.

1. remove any disc you have in the blu-ray.
2. turn off system.
3. turn off switch on back.
4. while pressing the "eject" button, turn switch on back to "on".
5. say "I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry, but I had to do it to prevent ylod" to your wife as she screams about all the dust in the air.

I will also occasionally use my shop vac and suck dust out of it, keeps the wife happier than when I reverse the fan and blow it into the air.

That works:)
Is there any way to do it on slimlines.:)
Cheers.

Same way...except instead of a pwr switch in the back, you plug/unplug the pwr cord. This does not "fix" a YLOD or RLOD, its only a self check/cleaning which theoretically should keep from YLOD due to dust and heat buildup. I personally just use a vacuum and open it (FAT) once a year for a thorough cleaning. My Slim is less than 2 months old.

EDIT: Wanted to add that I have not personally done the fan test on a slim. I got the info through surfing the net.

Not for me :(

I have 60gb release date fatty upgraded to 750gb, self clean failed :(

So here is the dilemma.

Target has an deal going on tomorrow

Is an $75 dollars gift card with purchase of an ps3 or Xbox.

I'm thinking about purchasing it and have the other one fixed.

Mates,

What do you think?

You know my thoughts :sly: 👍

So I ended up buying the 320gb this morning with the $75 dollars gift card..

I'm going to reflow the old one and have an good word with the guys after it has been repair.. reason is, why does it fail twice after it was repaired? I mean that's absurd.. they touch it and not even 3 months it the thing crash... Am I pissed over a little? Yes..

my other question, how do I copy the game data over? I have the data on an thumb-drive but I can't see the file when I plug it into the new ps3..

Just do the save data mate, I did it this morn as my 750gb release date fatty died
:(

I can still do stuff with it but discs failing so need a new drive.

I loaded the game & installed data then dl'd DLC on to my sons ps3, copied save data & been playing all day on my profile :)

hey mate..

I copy and pasted the most recent saved game to my thumb-drive.. but when I plugged it into the new ps3 (under the saved data in game) it said ' there are not saved game data '

but when I plug it back into the computer, the file is there..

That's weird bro, no idea why that is unless the data is corrupted?

I don't know..

and while I was researching..

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/transferutility.html

does that mean ALL my data from my source ps3 (fatty 80 gb) will be deleted once I transfer it to the new ps3? if it does, I will be furious...

tomorrow when I get to the repair shop, that bloke is going to have an good chat..

I mean, how can it fail twice in less than 3 months after they repair it? I ran my ps3 80 gb for an good 4 years with no problems what so ever but fails after they touches it.. doesn't that say something about these guys..

on top of this, they want another $40 dollars on top of the $90 dollars I paid for 3 months ago.. sucks even more, 3 months warranty.. bloody hell..

Okay, supra725, listen very carefully and dont waste any more money.

I had my PS3 fail on me, the YLOD. I could have got someone to fix it like you did just to get the thing running again. Don't do it, it's a waste of money. The PS3 will run for 4 months tops and then die again. Instead, accept the fact you won't be able to get that particular YLOD PS3 console up and running fresh like it was new.

EDIT: Before reading below, be sure that there is NO disc in the PS3. If there is a disc there, no worries. Plug the PS3 in but power off the switch on the back. Next, keep your finger on the eject button of the PS3. While holding your finger there, power the PS3 switch on the back on. The PS3's fan will go crazy and the disc will eject.

When I got the YLOD, I accepted my PS3's fate. Next, all I wanted to do was to get all my data. So, I found this neat trick of fixing the PS3 myself WITHOUT avoiding warranty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUaCoimoKTk

Don't use this guy's method exactly like he does it. Instead, for 10 minutes, use the hairdryer YOURSELF and move it slowly all the time blowing in the vents. Watch out when heating. Don't blow with the hairdryer on the same spot of the PS3 for too long or else you get what he shows you in the video @ 1:50. After those 10 minutes, give the PS3 a break for 15 minutes (so the plastic can cool down, prevent it from melting.) Then after the 15 minute break, do another 10 minute hairdrying, moving the hairdryer slowly all the time over the vent. Ohh, and remember to do as he does: having the PS3 upside down inside a box when using the hairdryer on it :)

When you are finished, let the PS3 cool down for 30 minutes. Now when you try to turn it on, it will turn on (at least mine did :D). Be smart and don't think you have fixed the PS3, you haven't. You only got it working for an hour, enough for you to do a system backup. Grab yourself a USB flashdrive and go to your gamedata -> copy all you want.

If you manage to make a copy of all the files you vitally want and the PS3 is still alive, grab yourself a big harddrive, a harddrive that can hold up all the data on the PS3. You will want to try the full backup this time. Go to your Settings in the PS3 main menu (XMB) -> System settings -> Backup utility -> Back up. This will back up ALL your data.

For your information: When you restore the data you recovered with the backup utility on another PS3, the new PS3 will deny to restore some data. However, it WILL restore data such as: All your images, music, videos and ALL gamesaves. You will need to redownload the patches for your games and also the games from the Playstation Store you had (if you had any). That's what it won't restore. You restore the data with the Backup utility's option, "Restore".

Hope this works for you the way it did for me!

while trying out the SLS top gear challenge,

my ps3 froze and I tried turning it on.. I got nothing but blinking yellow light/red light..

and I didn't create an back up of it.. I had 1000's + cars, 1500+ paints plus chrome line cars..

does that mean I lost all my data? is there any way I can retrieve it? what can I do?

does anyone know where I can fix it in Northern California region?

thanks.

If you did have so many stuff, it quite stupid that you never thought of a backup on USB stick, isnt it?

alittle update..

the fatty is back in the shop for the repair and possibly be picked up tomorrow afternoon..

Is this thread a joke? Did you not write in a previous post that you bought a new PS3 slim? Why in the world are you still screwing around with the old one? Or you just trolling here or something?

I had the ylod happen to me before Christmas and decided that as I had my PS3 since they where released, to just go out and buy a PS3 slim. Not a nice as the origunal but more than does the job!
