Jeeze, it's scary, especially since he's the senator from my state... It's sad, too, especially since his daughter and his wife went down too...

Yeah. It's been on the news for the past 4 hours. Probably longer.

It's quite sad that his wife and daughter died, though I can't say I've ever heard of him before.

It's a sad day in Minnesota.

Well this is all sad but if there is one good thing, they all died together. If you call that a bright spot. There are two other kids he has Im sad for them.

Such things are always a shame. From reading news.bbc, it sounds like he was a man who stood up for his principles, which is rare in a politician.

To tell you the truth I dont know, but come on he was a politician how good of a guy could he be, and he was a high school wrestler. I never trust pliticians.

The twin-engine private plane went down about 10 a.m. in freezing rain and light snow near the Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport, about 175 miles north of Minneapolis. A pilot in the area said the plane seemed to have veered away from the standard approach to the airport

Ice forms on the wings
Wings get heavier
More power applied to engines
Engines overstressed
Ice forms on engines
Engine 2 fails
Engine 1 fails
Wings too heavy
No lift
Airspeed to zero
Crash

How sad. :(

Actually, the principle cause of crashes through iced wings is that the control surfaces do not move, thus rendering the plane uncontrollable.

Damn. As sad as I am for this guy (who was a very good senator, by the way, for Minnesota), I need to know right now what party the governor of Minnesota is. Is it still Jesse Ventura?

Why do I feel I have to defend everything I post?

Another pilot, Don Sipola, said visibility in the area at the time was 2 1/2 miles, well above the one-mile minimum for a standard instrument landing. But he said the crash site was south of the normal approach path, so the plane must have deviated "for unknown and unexplained reasons."

Deviated. The pilot had control. Too much weight, not enough power to climb because of the ice on the wings. Crash.

I don't think you have to defend everything you post, but on this occasion I think you may be wrong. Your quote says that the plane was South of the normal approach, not below the normal approach. My contention is that ice on the wings causes control surface failure, thus leading to control loss. Your weight hypothesis would suggest that the plane was unable to maintain altitude, but would otherwise be under control. I'm afraid that Don Sipola rather defends my contention, not yours.

Well all youre gonna hear is how wonderful he was, not that he wasnt, but thats all youll hear

So the past few days we've been slammed with stuff against him, most of the things commercials say about anyone is taken out of context though. But yeah, he was a good politician. He also use to be a wrestler and a marathon runner, I remember that from a news program last week, because they were talking about the different candidates for Senate...

Um, a followup:

Our(Minnesota's) gov. is still Jesse Ventura. Supprisingly, he's stayed out of the news and media for quite some time, knowing his big mouth. Nobody knows who the next gov. will be, seeing that nobody even knows who's running. We know that Ventura(which isn't even his real name, I don't think. He got it changed or something a while back) claims he isn't running again, and since there's no funny commercials using GI-JOE figures after him in commercials, we can pretty much guess he's not running.

About the plane, from what I've heard, they're not sure if there was a black box or not. If there was, that would answer the question how the plane got out of control, but I don't think we should be playing the guessing game about that right now.

A concern I have is, what will happen to the US Senate? How often has it only had 99 senators? Who will fill in until the next election?

P.S. Who else here is from Minnesota?

rjensen: It's never before had 99 senators, and will not in this situation. When a senator dies, his position is vacant until an appointee is names by the governor of the state.

I guess we'll see.
