As some of you may have noticed or not, I've been trying to learn how to drift for a few months while my progress has been slow, there is progress.

I've been reading some threads (old ones) and noticed that previously drifting wasn't seen as something which required much skill. I don't agree obviously. But my point is that although my drifting talents are work in progress I am confident that my skills as a grip driver are really good probably up there (or near there) with the best grip drivers on gtp. (I'm not saying I'm the best or anything like that just that I'm a confident grip/racing driver)

I've been playing gt4 prologue and am getting golds fairly easily, is it right for me to assume that all drifters are good grip drivers?

To be a really good drifter, you have to also be a fairly good grip driver. Both types of driving require throttle and brake control, weight transfer, and good use of racing lines.

Well, there is a very easy way of finding out how you measure up. Take a few test runs at the GTPlanet weekly race series. I used to think I was balzing fast. Easyily kicking butt on my brother and a few friends. I was lucky enough to qualify for the Beginner division in the WRS. The skills some people in this world posess are quite amazing.

You can assume that all drifters are good at grip racing, as well as you can assume that all racers are good drifters. Each has similar skills, but are quite different. That is a really bad assumption to make. As for the old threads that stated drifting was easy, we've all long figured out and accepted that it is a legitimate and growing sport.

I agree with that, but when i was a grip driver, I always took a powerful car until my brother taught me that it ain't how fast the car is in the striaghts but in the corners does the judging on the winner.

whats funny about the grip driver\drift driver thing is that i have been playing this game almost everyday since the day it came out as a grip driver until about 6 months ago. Now that i have been drifting everytime i play it i cant really drive grip style now. Its funny cause i havent finished all of the races yet cause i didnt really care, but now that i am going back and trying to finish them i cant because all i do is drift. Even if i try not to i do it anyways cause im so used to it :)

Team MotoEthix was a Freestyle Motocross team a few years ago. They only lasted for about a year, but I liked the name 'Ethix' so I started using it.

As for what I said before. I'm not saying that if you're good at one then you're definitely going to be good at the other. All I'm saying is that to be a really good drifter, you need to be a a the very least, a decent grip driver. If you don't have good car control skills or a basic understanding of racing lines, drifting is going to be very difficult for you.

That is very true its not a very good assumption, if you can assume something one way, why not the other.

This is what I was getting at I feel that my grip driving skills have helped me loads trying to drift

I checked out the track times some people have posted, and your correct again some people are amazing at this game

I enjoy drifting but I still enjoy a challenging grip race :p

Some of the best grip races I've had have been in low power cars I like racing people when everyone has a similar car or when your car has some strengths and lacks other and your competitors have the strengths your cars lack and lack the strengths your car has (hope that makes sense) :D

In real life the better grip driver you are the better drift you will be. I'm not saying you have to be super fast but if you know hwo to control the car well it will make you a better drifter. But this doesn't apply to Gt3. You can learn ho wto control the car grip easily but you might not be super fast but it doesn't take months.

It helps to be a good grip racer to be a better drifter. Some of the best japanese drifters are JGTC racers. At first I had a hard time drifting because I wasn't a good grip racer(took shortcuts thru the grass, took bad lines, etc) then I raced more grip races and got better at grip racing. After that I began drifting again and improved amazingly faster than before. So I recommend to be at least a decent grip racer(knowledge of good lines, not running in the grass, etc) before starting to drift or else you might be struggling for some time.
