I die a little everytime i read 'allot'.

We had a spelling test at school years back and one of the questions was to spell 'a lot'. So many people got it wrong it was unbelieveable. I guess in a spelling test it's a bit of a trick because some people are only expecting one word, but they're the same people who think that it's one word anyway.

a lot != alot, allot, aaalllott, etc.

Its/It's is the one that annoys me the most.

Edit: Oh, affect/effect is another annoying one too.
affect - transitive verb
effect - noun

She will affect you.
She has an effect on me.
You will affect the effect.

However there are a few exceptions to this rule (of course).
See here for details.

After reading some of this I am seriously waiting for the "I hate to/too/two" post.

I find it funny that a lot of native English speakers make those mistakes here, yet I find this pretty easy. Or maybe that's why it's pretty easy. Since I don't speak English every day I don't write English words judging by how it sounds.

Its/it's gets me continually as well. Which one is the contraction and which is the posessive again?

It's because we have Hooked on Phonics. It is the best way to teach your kids how to read, spell improperly, and not understand the meaning behind the words.

Damn, if only this topic was made later. I knew this one! :D

Just practice, and you'll get the hang of it. ;)
Ha! I know how to use each word correctly, just saying it's irritating seein' other people slaughter them. :grumpy: :yuck: :dopey:
