What the hell do you need 13 systems for? You could run a damn server farm ...almost.

Oh I stopped at the systems I actually have working or have immediate plans for... I'm not actually sure how many systems I'll end up with when all is done... But now I'm curious. I'll have to write it out and get back to you.

As for need, who said anything about need? My computers are my toys. My parents won't let me play with cars while I live at home, so I play with computers instead. :p

The vast majority of my stuff I buy from surplus stores because most of it is old and outdated and thus extremely cheap (like $2-10 for a motherboard cheap). I have the Xeon system and the Dell XPS laptop that I use for gaming (the Xeons have a 6800GT, the Dell has a R9800m, which is an x800SE), and when I get around to RMAing my dual Athlon board I'll have that running again with the 9800XT in that too.

All the other systems I own are either old ones I bought a while back and keep around for backup use, or they're old hardware that I've just recently bought to screw around with. I don't spend nearly as much money on computer hardware as people think I do.

Oh, and no, no beowulf cluster. Just lots of individual toy systems. :p

G.T you so need to upgrade your CPU mate. Hope you join me on the 64bit CPU ship soon, got your seat warm and ready.

And what's your setup for that?!
Air. :)

I have like a million case fans, but nothing really special. The chip just rocks. 👍

I think I'll wait for my Dad to pass his current PC down to me as I very doubt he'd upgrade himself AND upgrade for me as it would be costly. My Pentium M 1.4Ghz is fine at the moment. 👍

Voted for >4.0GHz 'cause the poll doesn't account for SMP, which my "main" system is.

system 1: 2x 2.8GHz Xeons @ 3.2GHz
" 2: Sempron 3100 @ 2.4GHz
" 3: 3.4GHz Prescott P4 @ 3.4GHz*
" 4: Athlon XP 2600m @ 2.6GHz
" 5: 2x 1GHz PIIIs @ 1GHz
" 6: 2.8GHz Prescott P4 @ 2.8GHz (laptop)
" 7: 2.4GHz Northwood P4 @ 2.4GHz (laptop)
" 8: 2x 450MHz Pentium IIIs @ 450MHz*
" 9: 733MHz Motorola PowerPC G4 @ 733MHz
" 10: 166MHz Digital Equipment Corporation Alpha 64 bit RISC CPU*
" 11: 2x 200MHz/1MB L2 Pentium Pros @ 200MHz*
" 12: 2x 200MHz Pentium MMXs @ 200MHz*
" 13: 2x 133MHz Pentium-S @ 133MHz*

* = currently under construction
SMP doesnt work like that, Dual 3.2GHz is 3.2GHz not 6.4GHz

Topic of the hour:

What is the minimum CPU required to seriously play today's (and maybe tomorrow's) games?

IMO, my 2600+XP isn't sufficient, so i raise the bidding to around 3200. Any takers?
My computer is finally showing its age. I can run Quake 4 only on low detail @ 1280x1024 with no shadows or bump mapping or anything fancy. I have a XP 2600+ (R.I.P. Socket A....), 9800 Pro, and 1GB RAM. Everything on my computer is seriously outdated. My Socket type is dead, AGP is gone, and DDR2 is the new wave. I have SATA, though! 👍

ANyone know when the new line of Socket A CPUs come out? I heard there were gonna be some new ones, but I can't remember what they were called...

SMP doesnt work like that, Dual 3.2GHz is 3.2GHz not 6.4GHz

Quite well aware of that. However, the fact remains that given an SMP enabled OS and program, I have the capacity to process up to 2x the amount of data at one time as a single 3.2GHz CPU. More, in fact, in some cases because Xeons also have HT.

And that means that effectively, given the right circumstances, I do in fact have more processing power than a single 4GHz P4. And therein lies the key.

In most applications, I've got what amounts to a 3.2GHz P4 worth of CPU power.

HOWEVER, the total POTENTIAL processing power of the system is indeed up around 6.4GHz (note that it is NOT exactly equivalent to a single 6.4GHz CPU due to the overhead inherent in a SMP system; it is, however, in the ballpark). Ergo, the CPU speed is in fact equivalent to >4GHz. Under the right conditions.

We have exactly the same PCs :p I'm currently thinking of leaving my processor as it is for another year or so and upgrading my graphics card to a X800 XL and adding another 512 Mb of RAM. I didn't know that they were bringing out new Socket A chips! That's great news, you got a link for any info on that?!

New Socket A? :odd:

AMD announced not long after they released the Athlon 64 that they would be discontinuing Socket A. Sure you're not confusing this with the new M2 socket type? For those not in the know, AMD plan to transition Athlon 64s over to a new 940-pin socket (M2) with DDR2 memory support.

AMD is consolidating the Socket 754 and 939 into the Socket M2, which is suppose to have 940 pins and to be out in second quarter of 2006. The Opteron line is suppose to go into a 1027 pin or something socket around the same time.

So there will be no more Socket A chips? :( It sounded a bit weird i suppose. Oh well, 939 it is then. I assume the new 940s will be all more powerful that the FX55?

There is no such thing as a new skt940, 940 was a type of server socket but I dont think they still make processors for it.

Socket M2 is different.

The new M2 has 940 pins, but it is NOT socket 940.

They most certainly do still make processors for socket 940.

940 is the only current AMD platform that supports more than one socket per board (the A64s and FXs could be set up to support that as well, but AMD has chosen to disable that feature). If you want more than 2 CPU cores, and you want AMD, your only choice is socket 940.

Unless you get an Athlon X2, then you'd have 2 cores. :dopey:

Woot! I've got my 3.0e stable at 3.6ghz. Next stop: 3.9. The funny thing is, overclocking it actually lowered the temperature a few degrees Celsius.
