America - Tin Man

"But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have
And Cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad"

Kevin Gilbert - Waiting, the fourth track from the last release before his death (I'm determined to get them all down here).

"I'm waiting for the apple, I'm waiting for the fall
I'm waiting for a renaissance to electrify us all
I'm waiting for the mailman to bring me news of friends
I'm waiting through the middle just to see how it will end
How it will end

I am waiting for love to come
I am waiting for you to run
I am waiting for wonder to return

I’m waiting for the confidential files to be released
I'm waiting for the index on my fear to be increased
I'm waiting for the judgment of the living and the dead
I'm waiting for the Pagan times, they surely are ahead
I'm waiting for the show to start, the one I paid to see
I'm waiting for all the good things that are coming back to me
Coming back to me

I am waiting for love to come
I am waiting for you to run
I am waiting for wonder to return

… for the man-made gods to do the will of men
I'm waiting for the CIA to cover up again
I'm waiting for the militants to lighten up a bit
I'm waiting for the mafia to make this song a hit

I'm waiting in the shadows with a chain around my wrist
I'm waiting with my best friend held firmly in my fist
I'm waiting for my heroes to tell me what to dream
I'm waiting for my neighbors to tell me what's obscene
I'm waiting for the apple, I'm waiting for the fall
I'm waiting for a renaissance to electrify us all
Electrify us all

I am waiting for love to come
(Waiting for love to come)
I am waiting for you to run
(Waiting for you to run)
I am waiting for wonder to return
I am waiting for wonder to return

Waiting"

And a bonus: The Toyes - The Lucky Sperm Club

"Look at that guy with the new Mercedes
A great big house and fancy ladies
Winning the game by dropping daddy's name
And hanging with the other Lucky Sperm Club babies

The swinging king of the society scene
Gets obscene in a limousine
Charging cheap thrills full of frivolous frills
And taking lazy luxury to new extremes

And oh it must be fun
To be so wealthy, healthy, rich and young
One might wonder what he's done to become
The fortunate one

He's another member of the Lucky Sperm Club
The only thing he had to do was be conceived
It's great to be a member of the Lucky Sperm Club
Living in the lap of lazy luxury
Ya-wee
A guy like me should be so lucky-hee

It's a special club for the privileged few
Not for me, not for you
It's a wonderful life, no stress no strife
Never hurry, never worry like the poor folk do

And oh it must be fun
To be so wealthy, filthy rich and young
One might wonder what great things they've done to become
The fortunate ones

He's another member of the Lucky Sperm Club
The only thing he had to do was be conceived
It's great to be a member of the Lucky Sperm Club
Born into the lap of lazy luxury
Ya-wee
A guy like me should be so lucky-hee

The Lucky Sperm Club population is there by relation
They don't fill out applications and they pay no dues
You must inherit your invitation to this celebration
And The Lucky Sperm Club band don't play no blue-ue-ues

Oh, if it were my son
If one sweet someday all the work I've done
Is enough to ensure that my boy will become
The fortunate one

Then he can be a member of the Lucky Sperm Club
The only thing he had to do was be conceived
I hope that he's a member of the Lucky Sperm Club
Born into the lap of lazy luxury
Ya-wee
And when I'm old he'll take good care of me"

Murder By Death - Kentucky Bourbon

There are many choices in this life
That we don't get to make
Like who's your pa, where you're from
And when the leaves are down it's time to rake

But you can choose your drinking partner
And mine ain't from Tennessee
Yes, it's straight Kentucky bourbon for me

It's so raw and makes me feel good

Waves by Slowdive

Watch the waves so far away.
They're washing 'cross the paths that I have made.

Leaving all my sins I turn away.
Like soaring birds I watch my sorrows play.

Don't you know I've left and gone away?
You're knocking on the door I closed today.
And everything looks brighter.
The waves they just soothe my pain away.

Felt so good to see the sun.
I'll choose my time before I choose the one.

Floating 'cross the waves the silence runs.
My thoughts can go but now my sorrows done.

Don't you know I've left and gone away?
You're knocking on the door I closed today.
And everything looks brighter.
The waves they just soothe my pain away.

Kevin Gilbert - Tea For One, the fifth track from that album and probably my favorite on it:

"Duncan was always cautious
Never the one to take a stand
Convinced to the bone that he's happier alone
And to justify the part
Keeps a closely guarded heart

Standing amidst the subway
He spies the lady of his dreams
And catches her stare, long enough to make him care
"Oh my Lord, if beauty has a name
Then hers must be the same . . . "

Lights up on empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again
It looks like tea for one again - again

He sees her every day now
And each day he walks her to her door
But ever polite, he still sleeps alone at night
He keeps desire at bay, afraid to change his way

Lights up on empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again
It looks like tea for one again
It looks like tea for one again - again

Grey Monday evening finds him
Making their usual stops alone
Where can she be?
He just has to go and see
And there's roses in his hand
For his new romantic plans

Caught in the pouring rain he crouches beneath her awning
And there through the screen spies his lady of esteem
Not alone
And there's rapture on her face
Within a man's embrace

Lights up on empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again

Lights up on empty rooms
Home too soon, home too soon
Somewhere inside he burns
It looks like tea for one again
It looks like tea for one again
Tea for one again
It’s gonna be tea for one again"

Pink Floyd - The Trial (mild language warning)

[Verse 1: Prosecutor]
"Good morning, Worm your honour
The crown will plainly show
The prisoner who now stands before you
Was caught red-handed showing feelings
Showing feelings of an almost human nature
This will not do
Call the schoolmaster!"

[Verse 2: The Schoolmaster]
"I always said he'd come to no good
In the end your honour
If they'd let me have my way I could
Have flayed him into shape
But my hands were tied
The bleeding hearts and artists
Let him get away with murder
Let me hammer him today"

[Chorus 1: Pink (and Choir)]
"Crazy
Toys in the attic, I am crazy
Truly gone fishing
They must have taken my marbles away
(Crazy, toys in the attic, he is crazy)"

[Verse 3: Wife]
"You little **** you're in it now
I hope they throw away the key
You should have talked to me more often than you did, but no!
You had to go your own way
Have you broken any homes up lately?
'Just five minutes, Worm your honour
Him and me, alone'"

[Verse 4: Mother]
"Babe
Come to mother baby, let me hold you in my arms
M'lud I never wanted him to get in any trouble
Why'd he ever have to leave me?
Worm, your honour, let me take him home"

[Chrous 2: Pink (and Choir)]
"Crazy
Over the rainbow, I am crazy
Bars in the window
There must have been a door there in the wall
When I came in
(Crazy, over the rainbow, he is crazy)"

[Verse 5: The Judge]
"The evidence before the court is incontrovertible
There's no need for the jury to retire
In all my years of judging, I have never heard before
Of someone more deserving of the full penalty of law
The way you made them suffer
Your exquisite wife and mother
Fills me with the urge to defecate
(Go on, Judge, **** on him!)
Since, my friend, you have revealed your deepest fear
I sentence you to be exposed before your peers
Tear down the wall!"

[Outro: Crowd]
"Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!"

I actually dislike some of the lyrics of "Take Me to Church" by Hozier, but I really like this bit:

No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean

Bruce Springsteen - Radio Nowhere

I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night

This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?

I was spinnin' 'round a dead dial
Just another lost number in a file
Dancin' down a dark hole
Just searchin' for a world with some soul

This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?

I just want to hear some rhythm
I just want to hear some rhythm
I just want to hear some rhythm
I just want to hear some rhythm

I want a thousand guitars
I want pounding drums
I want a million different voices speaking in tongues

This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?

I was driving through the misty rain
Yeah searchin' for a mystery train
Boppin' through the wild blue
Tryin' to make a connection with you

This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?

I just want to feel some rhythm
I just want to feel some rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm
I just want to feel your rhythm

I actually dislike some of the lyrics of "Take Me to Church" by Hozier,
Mind if I prod you to elaborate? I gave it a listen and read along, and I'm curious where your head is at.

Silver Jews - Ballad of Reverend War Character (Language warning. Probably fine, but better safe than sorry.)

"Miss Mary Jane measures rain in a cracked cup on the sill
In Embry's last photograph he disappears over a hill
Darrell Dotson waits in the grass for a fight
The stars don't shine upon us
We're in the way of their light

The new girl in Tahoe has swallowed Sinatra's ***
A Russian primadonna dances slow on valium
After the game the benchwarmer can't get a ride
In space there is no center
We're always off to the side

John Parker III steps over a bird on a Wall St. window ledge
Little Wilkie finds a dead cat rotting deep inside the hedge
Mahalia Roach dies on a Greyhound coach in July
In a horror movie when the car won't start
You give it one last try

Guinnevere orders one more beer in the smokey pick-up bar
A burnt-out tramp by the exit ramp waits for one more car
The Latin teacher always smelled like piss
The census figures come out wrong
There's an extra in our midst"

The last thought of the first verse gives me chills; "The stars don't shine upon us, we're in the way of their light."

...

Toy Matinee - There Was A Little Boy

This tune's been giving me chills for close to 30 years. Though sung by Kevin Gilbert, he shares writing credit for the entire album with his Toy Matinee collaborator, Patrick Leonard.

"Mother's crazy but she runs the family
Two older sisters and the boy who's nine years old
He's old enough to see the way it's going
Somewhere the birds are singing
But mother's all alone

He needs a father but she takes a lover
This man is not a friend, shows no friendship
This man just waits around to play with sister
But he plays too serious, he plays too rough

How can you expect a child to understand the sickness of a world whose eyes are blind?
The dying man inside this little boy is questioning his once upon a time

He leaves home early for a loveless world
And he finds what he needs with an older boy
He's got a couple things to hide from mother
He hopes she'll understand, she hopes he'll change

How can you expect a child to understand the sickness of a world whose eyes are blind?
(There was a little boy)
A world he cannot hope to conquer, insecurities that fester in his mind
(There was a little boy)
No choice, no fault and no way out, no blame, no guilt, no friends, no cure, no crime.
(There was a little boy)
The dying man inside this little boy is questioning his once upon a time.
(There was a little boy)

This boy was once a strong man - but getting weaker
He carries more than just the shame inside
His mother stays away and faces nothing
She blindly wishes for a happy ending

How can you expect a child to understand the sickness of a world whose eyes are blind?
(There was a little boy)
A world he cannot hope to conquer, insecurities that fester in his mind
(There was a little boy)
No choice, no fault and no way out, no blame, no guilt, no friends, no cure, no crime.
(There was a little boy)
The dying man inside this little boy is questioning his once upon a time.
(There was a little boy)"

...

And here's the next song (the sixth) from Kevin's final release prior to his death in 1996.

Kevin Gilbert - Shadow Self

"I'm a sick man, a very sick man
I don't expect you to understand
(There I am, just look at me)
I walk among you in talked-of men
And I am power's most vital friend
(There I am, you're looking at me)
But there is no one I have not known
And no one's vengeance I do not own
(There I am, just look at me)
I am there in the back of your mind
I am uncaring; I am unkind
(There I am, you're looking at me)

Creep up behind you when you fill with hate
I get excited when you're irate
I make you crazy, make your conscience numb
I've got the anger, gonna get you some

Now we think what we're taught
Shadow self, what we thought
There is no right or wrong
Shadow self, sing your song

(You will become me)
There's a fire in my head, can't put out
(You will become me)
There's a name on my lips, can't pronounce
(You will become me)
There's a stain on my heart, can't get out
(You will become me)
And you know the way

(masquesofhonorLiebensbornofdarknessbrothersweareswornyoumakeusstrongwhenweareweakyouaretheonlytruthweseekyouonlytoforgetthehollowmenwehavebecomeyourfollowerssoleadusnowtoparadisewe'llneverhavetowearthem)

I beat your children, I drop your bomb
From schoolyard brawls to the Pentagon
(There I am, just look at me)
Give me a conflict, give me a war
Just give me something worth fighting for
(There I am, you're looking at me)

Don't try to keep me bottled up inside
I'm there inside you now, you cannot hide
I've always been and I will always be
I like the goose-step, won't you dance with me?

There are no (There are no)
Words to say (Words to say)
Shadow self (Shadow self)
Nature’s way (Nature’s way)
Lives in you (Lives in you)
Lives in me (Lives in me)
Shadow self (Shadow self)
Never free (No one is ever free!)

(masqueofhonorLiebensbornofdarknessbrothersweareswornyoumakeusstrongwhenweareweakyouaretheonlytruthweseekyouonlytoforgetthehollowmenwehavebecomeyourfollowerssoleadusnowtoparadisewe'llneverhavetowearthemmasqueofgoodnessandofgracethebloodofangelsmadetofacethehorrorofthenakedtruthisonlywhatyoumakeitdothethingsyouwanttodocompletetheanimalthathastoeattheinnocentarelefttobeartheblamewe'llneverhavetowearthemmasqueofhonorLiebensbornofdarknessbrothesweareswornyoumakeusstrongwhenweareweakyouaretheonlytruthweseekyouonlytoforgetthehollowmenwehavebecomeyourfollowerssoleadusnowtoparadisewe'llneverhavetowearthemmasqueofgoodnessandofgracethebloodofangelsmadetofacethehorrorofthenakedtruthisonlywhatyoumakeitdothethingsyouwanttodocompletetheanimalthathastoeattheinnocentarelefttobeartheblamewe'llneverhavetowearthemmasqueofhonorLiebensbornofdarknessbrothersweareswornyoumakeusstrongwhenweareweakyouaretheonlytruthweseekyouonlytoforgetthehollowmenwehavebecomeyourfollowerssoleadusnowtoparadisewe'llneverhavetowearthemmasqueofgoodnessandofgracethebloodofangelsmadetofacethehorrorofthenakedtruthisonlywhatyoumakeitdothethingsyouwanttodocompletetheanimalthathastoeattheinnocentarelefttobeartheblamewe'llneverhavetowearthemmasqueofhonorLiebensbornofdarknessbrothesweareswornyoumakeusstrongwhenweareweakyouaretheonlytruthweseekyouonlytoforgetthehollowmenwehavebecomeyourfollowerssoleadusnowtoparadisewe'llneverhavetowearthem)"

The tremendous talent he had has never left me feeling he could have squeezed even just a little more out of anything he did.

Mind if I prod you to elaborate? I gave it a listen and read along, and I'm curious where your head is at.

I just find the bit below to be really uninspired, cliche, and somewhat groanworthy. I also get lost really quickly when it comes to food/sex metaphors. Susan Tedeschi (who I love) has another example of a confused food/sex verse in "Rock me Right".

Hozier:
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

Tedeschi:
Well your stomach starts growlin', I know what you need, baby
Oh, fix me up something salty and sweet
Oh, now homemade cookin' always does the trick
Oh, your cotton ain't rotten, just needs to be picked
Oh, now your momma sure done raised you right
When it comes to home cooking you eat every bite
Take your sweet time, got all night
I'm gonna show you how to rock me right

Metallica - ...And Justice For All

Halls of justice painted green
Money talking
Power wolves beset your door
Hear them stalking
Soon you’ll please their appetite
They devour
Hammer of justice crushes you
Overpower

The ultimate in vanity
Exploiting their supremacy
I can’t believe the things you say
I can’t believe
I can’t believe the price you pay
Nothing can save you

Justice is lost
Justice is raped
Justice is gone
Pulling your strings
Justice is done
Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real

Apathy their stepping stone
So unfeeling
Hidden deep animosity
So deceiving
Through your eyes their light burns
Hoping to find
Inquisition sinking you
With prying minds

The ultimate in vanity
Exploiting their supremacy
I can’t believe the things you say
I can’t believe
I can’t believe the price you pay
Nothing can save you

Justice is lost
Justice is raped
Justice is gone
Pulling your strings
Justice is done
Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real

Lady Justice has been raped
Truth assassin
Rolls of red tape seal your lips
Now you’re done in
Their money tips her scales again
Make your deal
Just what is truth? I cannot tell
Cannot feel

The ultimate in vanity
Exploiting their supremacy
I can’t believe the things you say
I can’t believe
I can’t believe the price we pay
Nothing can save us

Justice is lost
Justice is raped
Justice is gone
Pulling your strings
Justice is done
Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real

Seeking no truth
Winning is all
Find it so grim
So true
So real

Just a quickie from one of my favorites, which played on my way home today; Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill".

To keep in silence, I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
'Til I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey," he said
"Grab your things, I've come to take you home"

Love the song. But the lyrics of the ending part is what I like about it.

New Radicals - You Get What You Give

Health insurance rip-off lying
FDA big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes, run to your mansions
Come around, we'll kick your ass in

"Rolling the Dice" by Thunder.

The second verse:

"Sometimes wish I'd never learned to play that guitar
'Til I turn around and see the size of my car
'Cos if the truth be known I'm not a hit with the girls
And it's murder living up to all the stories they've heard

Just an ordinary guy, with a strange old job
Getting paid to behave, like a juvenile slob, yes I am"

Final verse:

"Never used to worry what the future would bring
But how long can I really keep on doing my thing?
I'll be like an addict trying to quit his stuff, (yes I will)
But it's sad but it's true, it's a labour of love

Guess I'll have to retire to the south of Spain
Teeing off with the wife I forget about the rain
So when it's slipping away from me
I'll rather be a slave to eternity"

Tarot - Dark Star Burning

Something about this song just makes me want to take a mega-powerful spaceship and fly it really, really, really fast.

"Space-time and rocket juice
Suck in the bittersweet taste
Light, sound - they mutate
Paradoxic waste!

Face, grime, the ingrained humor
Black laughter drowns it all
Flight, bound for even horizon
Head on to the fall"

"Send me your location
Let's focus on communicatin' 'cause
I just need the time and place to come through
(A place to come through)"

Meshuggah - Straws Pulled At Random

What solace lies in the arms of fate?
The ill-embrace of uncertainty
When did I leave this in other hands?
To be pulled down at chance

Ripped away by destiny-claws
Am I another of fate's possessions
Dwelling the lie of freedom?
Just another straw pulled at random

Reclaimed by deceiving time
A silent judgement I can not overrule

Drawn back into the origin-vortex
Uprooted and ground to dust
Retracted into anti-existence
A magnet repelled by life's polarity

Denied the self control of fate
We flow suspended in semi-life
Until the ever imminent day
When oblivion claims our breath

Nowhere indefinitely
Not dead, not alive
Existence-patterns ripped of symmetry
As will and fate divide

Have I appeased the gods of fate?
Am I allowed another day?
Must I die to escape
the scanning eyes of death?

Planet P Project - Top Of The World

"Dawn comes and you're up
You drink a fast cup
Don't keep them waiting
All systems are go
Far down below
Morning is breaking
And you're ready
You know the routine
You suit up and you board your machine
As all over the world
Eyes are glued to the video screens

There's a hole in the clouds
When you look up tonight
A window that beckons you
Toward the moonlight
The tower counts down
And the moment is right
You take a deep breath
But your chest still goes tight
Alone
At the top of the world

Day turns into night
Turns back to day
Twice on the hour
You're far from it now
Light years away
Thin stream of power
[Rumbling under your feet]
['Eagle' leaps from the concrete]
And the lines fly away
As the pad crumbles under the heat

There's a hole in the clouds
When you look up tonight
A window that beckons you
Toward the moonlight
The tower counts down
And the moment is right
You take a deep breath
But your chest still goes tight
Alone
At the top of the world

[Hole in the clouds]
[A window that beckons you]

There's a hole in the clouds
When you look up tonight
A window that beckons you
Toward the moonlight
The tower counts down
And the moment is right
You take a deep breath
But your chest still goes tight
Alone
At the top of the world

The top of the world
The top of the world"

Some license is surely taken, but I think the lyrics do a spectacular job of painting a shuttle launch. I think the song is absolutely stunning musically as well.

Jimmy Buffett - "One Particular Harbor"

Ia ora tei natura (Tahitian: Nature lives)
E mea arofa tei ao nei (Have pity for the Earth)
Ia ora tei natura
E mea arofa tei ao nei

Lakes below the mountains
Flow into the sea
Like oils applied to canvas
They permeate through me

And there's that one particular harbor
Sheltered from the wind
Where the children play on the shore each day
And all are safe within

Most mysterious calling harbor
So far but yet so near
I can see the day when my hair's full gray
And I finally disappear

Crazy as this year has been, I sort of forgot I was doing this. Here's the next track from Kevin Gilbert's last album released during his lifetime, Thud. Nearing the end, this one's softer and a bit more heartfelt.

Kevin Gilbert - The Tears of Audrey

"Audrey's donning her black dress again
A dress she always plans to wear
'It's over,' she says it softly over
'I'm all alone'

She does not listen to the eulogies
She gives no credence to her pain
'From now on, I'm through with love
From now on, I will not love again.'

There are no hearts to mend
There are no prayers to send
There's no reasons why
There's no need to cry for the sadness of it all
There are no skies of blue
There are no dreams come true
And there is no care
Let the world beware, should the tears of Audrey fall

She carefully polishes her heart of stone
She deftly sculpts her feet of clay
'I'm no one and none can touch me
No one... it's easier this way.'

There are no hearts to mend
There are no prayers to send
And there is no care
Let the world beware should the tears of Audrey fall

So now she's shutting all her windows tight
And now she's closing all her blinds
'How can I believe in light
When darkness is all around?'

There are no hearts to mend
There are no prayers to send
There's no reasons why
There's no need to cry for the sadness of it all
There are no skies of blue
There are no dreams come true
And there is no care
Let the world beware should the tears of Audrey fall"

I consistently forget this thread exists :nervous:.

Sober Up by AJR

My favorite color is you
You're vibrating out my frequency
My favorite color is you
You keep me young and that's how I wanna be

Sober Up - AJR

Hello, hello
I'm not where I'm supposed to be
I hope that you're missing me
'Cause it makes me feel young
Hello, hello
Last time that I saw your face
Was recess in second grade
And it made me feel young
Won't you help me sober up
Growing up it made me numb
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me sober up
All the big kids they are drunk
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me feel something again
How's it go again?
Goodbye, goodbye
I said to my bestest buds
We said that we'd keep in touch
And we did our best
All my new friends
We smiled at party time
But soon we forgot to smile
At anything else
Won't you help me sober up
Growing up it made me numb
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me sober up
All the big kids they are drunk
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me feel something again
How's it go again?
How's it go again?
My favorite color is you
You're vibrating out my frequency
My favorite color is you
You keep me young and that's how I wanna be
My favorite color is you
You're vibrating out my frequency
My favorite color is you
You keep me young and that's how I wanna be
Hello, hello
I'm not where I'm supposed to be
I hope that you're missing me
'Cause it makes me feel young
Hello, hello
Last time that I saw your face
Was recess in second grade
And it made me feel young
And I wanna feel something again
I just wanna feel something again
How's it go again?
Won't you help me sober up
Growing up it made me numb
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me sober up
All the big kids they are drunk
And I want to feel something again
Won't you help me feel something again?
Can I finally feel something again?
How's it go again?

So clear like the diamond in your ring
Cut to mirror your intention
Oversized and overwhelmed
The shine of which has caught my eye
And rendered me so isolated
So motivated
I am certain now that
I am

Hands down (pun intended) one of my favorite bands/musicians (Chris Carrabba) of all time. Picked up DC from a good friend in college and never looked back. Tons of his songs have absolutely brilliant lyrics. Emotional, and paints a picture like no other. Often times the lyrics will make me evaluate my own life. And I like that. Not that a song is influencing me more than it should, but it helps me be constructively critical over myself without having my own bias. Music in general does this for me, and that's why I love music so much. Chris's music probably does it the best for me though.

Vindicated by Dashboard Confessional

Hope dangles on a string
Like slow-spinning redemption
Winding in and winding out
The shine of it has caught my eye
And roped me in
So mesmerizing so hypnotizing
I am captivated
I am
Vindicated
I am selfish
I am wrong
I am right, I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along and
I am flawed
But I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself
So clear like the diamond in your ring
Cut to mirror your intention
Oversized and overwhelmed
The shine of which has caught my eye
And rendered me so isolated
So motivated
I am certain now that
I am
Vindicated
I am selfish I am wrong
I am right, I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along and
I am flawed
But I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself
So turn up the corners of your lips
Part them and feel my fingertips
Trace the moment, fall forever
Defense is paper thin
Just one touch and I'd be in too deep now
To ever swim against the current
So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip against the current
So let me slip away (4x)
Vindicated
I am selfish I am wrong
I am right, I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed, but I am cleaing up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself
Slight hope
It dangles on a string
Like slow spinning redemption

"A friend to all is a friend to none"

-------

Cardigan - Taylor Swift

Vintage tee, brand new phone
High heels on cobblestones
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
Sequin smile, black lipstick
Sensual politics
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you
Dancin' in your Levi's
Drunk under a streetlight
I, I knew you
Hand under my sweatshirt
Baby, kiss it better, right
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
A friend to all is a friend to none
Chase two girls, lose the one
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you
Playin' hide-and-seek and
Givin' me your weekends
I, I knew you
Your heartbeat on the High Line
Once in twenty lifetimes, I
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
To kiss in cars and downtown bars
Was all we needed
You drew stars around my scars
But now I'm bleedin'
'Cause I knew you
Steppin' on the last train
Marked me like a bloodstain
I, I knew you
Tried to change the ending
Peter losing Wendy
I, I knew you
Leavin' like a father
Runnin' like water, I
And when you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you'd linger like a tattoo kiss
I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs
The smell of smoke would hang around this long
'Cause I knew everything when I was young
I knew I'd curse you for the longest time
Chasing shadows in the grocery line
I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired
And you'd be standin' in my front porch light
And I knew you'd come back to me
You'd come back to me
And you'd come back to me
And you'd come back
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite

Recently discovered Travis Meadows. Wow. This guy has some lyrics.

This is from his song Underdogs.

Underdogs - Travis Meadows

[Verse 1]
Orphans and renegades
Rednecks and trucker shades
Loners on holidays
Old men chasin' glory days
Young lovers with broken hearts
Old soldiers missin' parts
Yeah, we all got battle scars
Maybe that makes us who we are

[Chorus]
We are, we are
We are the underdogs
We are, we are
We are the underdogs
We may fall behind but we rise, we climb
And we shine like broken stars
We are, we are
We are the underdogs, yeah

[Verse 2]
We're just a little outside the gates
Fall down seven, get up eights
Makers of great mistakes
Lovers of what others hate
Big gloves on feather weights
You'll be surprised at the punch we take
We bend, we bruise
But we never break

[Chorus]
We are, we are
We are the underdogs
We are, we are
We are the underdogs
We may fall behind, but we rise, we climb
And we shine like broken stars
We are, we are
We are the underdogs, yeah

[Interlude]

[Bridge]
We are
We are the underdogs
We are
We are the underdogs

[Chorus]
We are, we are
We are the underdogs
We are, we are
We are the underdogs
We may fall behind
But we rise, we climb
And we shine like broken stars
We are, we are
We are the underdogs, yeah

These lyrics have to be up there. It's not my favorite song, but these lyrics make you think for a bit.

John Lennon - Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky

Imagine all the people
Livin' for today
Ah

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too

Imagine all the people
Livin' life in peace
You

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

"A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved" may have shattered me the first time I heard it. And every other time I've heard it for that matter. I shuffled into this song the other day for the first time in a while. With my grandma's health decline the past year, and changes in my own life recently, the song hits on an entirely different level than before. Bolded some parts that I like.

Supermarket Flowers - ED SHEERAN

I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill
I threw the day old tea from the cup
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Memories of a life that's been loved
Took the get well soon cards and stuffed animals
Poured the old ginger beer down the sink
Dad always told me, "Don't you cry when you're down"
But mum, there's a tear every time that I blink
Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved

So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up

Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up
Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case
John says he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek
And wiped a tear from the side of my face
I hope that I see the world as you did 'cause I know
A life with love is a life that's been lived

So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
You got to see the person I have become
Spread your wings and I know
That when God took you back he said Hallelujah
You're home

Jimmy Buffett - "Fins"

She's saving up all of her money
Wants to hit it south in May
Maybe roll in the sand with a rock 'n' roll man
Somewhere down Montserrat way
But the money's good, and the season
Helps to lighten up her load
Boys keep her high as the months go by
She's getting postcards from the road

Can't you feel them circling, honey?
Can't you feel them swimming around?
You've got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you're the only bait in town
Oh, whoa
Oh, whoa
You got fins to the left
Fins to the right
And you're the only girl in town
