Your first job?

How, I heard you can't get a legit job until you're 16. I've only heard that from some people though.. Hoe exactly does that work? Oh yeah, I live in USA, California, cause I'm not too sure how much it differs from place to place.

My first job? Pushing trolleys at the local Supermarket. I didn't like it much, but hey, it was money.
Too much of an intellectual challenge ????

My first Job was working with royal mail. my area was w1 or to people who don't know london area codes in central london in the main office. It was kinda harsh I had to get to work by 6:15 am from monday till saturday but that was cool because I would finish work just arfter 1pm and had the whole day to myself. and since working for royal mail I pretty much have a road map through most of the roads in central london I could get you anywhere you want between tottenham court road to marble arch road

I thought it was pretty much the same across the country. You can get a job when you're 14, but you have to have working papers. You can only work a certain amount of hours during the week and on the weekends.

The first job i am going to try and get (legal age is 14 years 9 months...) is one at the Electronics Boutique about half an hour away from where i live...:) Either that or the local KFC (about 2 minutes away).

Where would I go about getting these working papers?

Try calling your county courthouse, or some other local government building. they should have what you need, or atleast be able to point you in the right direction.

Hmm. Methinks the words 'staff discount' might be weighing heavily on those choices!

My first real job was working at a SuperMarket.
My first real legally paying job was at Publix Supermarkets, in March of 1990, as a customer's foodstuff placement engineer (bagger). Talk to them, BS with them, tell them how smart their kids are, etc. and you got a tip at times. Christmastime was great, people always had a dollar for you (of course they had very heavy carts that understeered horribly, especially without any rain tires). Of course, you get wet, you get hot, you get fumes, you nearly get run over, you get trunks closed on your head...I couldn't wait to move up to stockpersonel.

Before that, I worked at a day camp (where I used to be a camper) and didn't get paid anything except for tips at the end of the year. The knack was you got lots of priviliges that campers didn't get (which was neat for a 15 year old). I did it only because I told myself I'd like to do that when I was a camper there.

Before Publix, I mowed lawns and washed cars on my neighborhood; it was decent money...especially knowing now how much people pay to have thier cars washed! Nowadays, there's too much liability at stake, few kids could probably do those things unless they were very good friends or relatives.

$4, that was 65 cents more than minimum weage at the time...that was my promary reason for choosing where I worked.

I charged about $5 for a car wash and another $5 ($10 if we edged the lawn) for mowing.

I would really like to start working to start saving towards my car and one friend suggested to do what you did and mow lawns. I'm just not sure if it works going up to someone's house and asking them if they want their lawn mowed.

It works. And if you do a good job you have a repeat customer. A few of those and you could make some decent money. Then you could incorporate you landscaping business and have illegal immigrants do the work for you while you just schedule the jobs and schmooze the customers.

Hmmm, I dunno about the illegal people but I'll make a deal with a few younger ones and won't take their lunch money if they do a good job... :D
