You just moved into a house with a large garage and have a total of 5 spots to fill. These can be any cars that you want, but I'm looking for a more ideal lineup. (Daily Driver, weekend toy, towing truck, etc.)

What would you purchase to fill those spots?

Here's mine:

  • '08+ Mercedes C-Class (Daily)
  • '11 Ford SVT Raptor (weekend 4x4)
  • '11 Ford Super Duty (Tow rig)
  • '04 Mazda Miata w/LS3 (weekend toy)
  • '09 Mazda 5 (family hauler)

I hate to say it, but we've had a variety of similar threads before. I'm not going to lock this one, but have a search and see what turns up.

See, I came in here anticipating a slight discussion of how we'd like our actual garages to be... That'd be an interesting thread, I'd venture. Tools, benches, decoration (!!!)... Awesome.

Then let's hijack the thread and do that!

I'll have to do some thinking...especially as I'm looking for an apartment, and that's kinda swimming in my head.

Mine would require a set of 2-post and 4-post lifts. Compressor quick connects every 15 feet along the walls and another set hanging from the ceiling. Nice, quality, chemical resistant floors, fridge, internet, TV, couch, wall to wall tool boxes. Am I missing anything besides cars?

That's what I thought too. I third the hijack!

My garage would be an integral part of my house, actually.

The building itself would be made of fancy brick, would have a bottom floor, middle floor, and roof level. The bottom floor would be the garage, the middle level the living area, and the top floor would house a pool (one helluva top floor), deck, and generally be a big party area.

The garage would be a pass-through design similar to some car dealership shops. I've planned it to fit in a lot just up the hill from my house and it would look similar to the lawncare warehouse place next door, which is decidedly un-residential.

The layout: From the road, the building would be deeper than it is wide. There would be a driveway wrapping around the entire building connected to one entrance at the road. There would be large industrial garage doors on the front and back of the building so you could drive straight through it. On one side would be two 2-post lifts and one alignment machine, along with a tire changing machine, work benches, toolboxes, etc. The would be angled toward the rear of the building, meaning the rear would actually be the entrance. Easier access and whanot. On the other side would be a lounge area with couches, a TV, video games, beverages, refrigerator, you name it, along with an empty area to park a couple cars. At the very rear of my lot would be a row of garages, 6 cars wide, where I would park any other cars like friends who came to stay or whatever.

Mind you, I'm no architect, so I have no idea what sort of structure would be required to hold up a 40,000 gallon should-be-in-ground pool above a house, but I'm sure it would be substantial. It's doable! Just in case, I would have a stainless steel roof-under-the-roof inside a nifty looking "crawl space" between the house roof and the underside of the pool.

The idea for putting it at the top of the hill would be the view. You can see for miles up there, and even see downtown Dayton off in the distance. It would be spectacular waking up in the morning, walking out to my enormous living room and gazing through the floor-to-ceiling, full-width bay window to see that view. Holy cow.

This would end up being quite the tall little building, what with an industrial-height garage roof, 10 foot stepped ceilings in the house, crawl space under the pool, and then the 8-foot deep pool itself and structure for the roof level, and the optional glass roof that would cover it during winter. Spectacular, no?

Assuming that I had some property to do it on, just like my Dad and my Grandfather, I'd want to have a large barn to do my work in... An escape of sorts from the life back at the house. It would have to be a two-story structure, but I would likely want to build mine in a more modern, modular way than the more traditional "barn" structure that my family has used before.

The "lower" section would have to serve as the garage itself, nothing too outrageously large, but enough to be able to hold as many as eight vehicles if necessary, with at least 5-10 feet between them. Something like an 80ft X 60ft, single-story structure to house the vehicles, preferably with a two and a half stall opening at the end to get the vehicles in and out. The more livable, "upper" space would end up being more like an attached, furnished loft to hold "man events" in, or just to be a good place to take a damn nap. Maybe something like a 20ft X 40ft space, the lower floor having a bathroom and kitchen attached to the garage, and the upper floor essentially being a large, open space with a home theater and some artwork to keep the walls from looking too boring.

I think the big challenge for me would be attempting to make this building as green as possible. If my land would be able to do it, I'd want to be able to go all-solar if possible, and use some water-catching systems to conserve on that as well. I would want a "living roof," covered with grass and so on to keep the green thing going.

Now that I think about it, this may as well be an apartment...

EDIT: I feel the need to make an illustration for this!

EDIT EDIT: Look what I made in MSPaint on a Netbook!

I would paint the garage pink and then hire a crew of mechanics to do all the maintenance and work for me.

1. 2011 Mercedes Benz E-Class (Everyday)
2. 2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (SUV)
3. 2006 Pagani Zonda F (Exotic)
4. 2009 Ducati 1198 R Corse (Bike)
5. 2009 Maserati Granturismo (4 seat, family vehicle)

I'm gonna dream big. Really big.

Let's start with the lot. a good 30-40 acres, something I could put a good-sized building on. The building itsself...likely steel prefab. that's easy to maintain. It would be two rows. Each row would consist of 28 bays. That's 54 bays total.

What for? easy. 50 cars (actually, 48 and a monster truck) and 4 to maintain stuff with. That'd be where my lifts and maintenance equipment would be.

Then just stick a living area on the end. With the rest of the land, make a racetrack, and perhaps some offroad trails, a mud pit, and a couple "freestyle" obstacles.

This, of course, provided I had unlimited funds. There are days I wish my life had a gameshark...

Oh, you guys talking about big lots reminded me that the house i described earlier wasn't half of it. That's just my house.

The more important part is the lot I would buy out in the country about 3 miles from my house. Since I'd be filthy rich I'd just be a dick and buy some farmer's land. On it I would build a row of garages and workshops similar to a car dealership or race track. I'd also have a lounge with everything you might want, like you'd find at a race track. Why would it be like a race track? Because there would be a race track.

I'd have legit replicas of the Tsukuba and Ebisu circuits built on my land. I'm talking asphalt material, topography, even the things that are wrong with the original track. Nearly a carbon-copy, or at least as much as you can make it.

Then I'd let all my friends know that I've got two race tracks and I'd invite them all to come check it out. I would turn this into an underground business basically, charging a very reasonable fee for people of my choice to come whenever they feel like it - day, night, rain, snow, Easter - and drive the balls off their cars. It would awesome.

Good hijack. I've got loads of garage ideas swimming around in my head actually. I need to fire up the Sims and construct one...

Getting late at the moment though, so I'll leave that for another day.

I like Jim and Keef's track ideas though, it's definitely something I would do with vast wealth. A track, a big garage, and a bunch of cars that all you guys could fly over to the UK (or France, or wherever else I'd build it) and come drive. Epic petrolhead parties.

I'm guessing you missed the rest of the thread ;) This thread is now for actual garages - the dream car ones are elsewhere.

Maybach Landaulet..(everyday ride)
Mercedes-Benz SLR..(everyday drive)
Nissan Murano.........(for countryside)
Caterham 7.............(track days)
BMW M5.................(family rides, pick-up kids)

The thread fooled me too. I was hoping to come in explaining how I'd like my dream garage to be, and what it would have in it.

Seems to be the same ol' "your top 5 favorite blah blah blah" thread that pops up on a weekly basis.

My garage would have like marble type stone flooring and have cars scattered in it. And i would have a gas station thing near the entrance to the garage. I would have 2 lifts and the cars i would have in it:

Porsche Carrara GT $440 000
Pagani Zonda C12S $370 000 around
Pagani Zonda F Roadster $1.4 mil
Pagani Zonda Cinque $?
Audi R8 $170 000
Ferrari F430 $240 000
LandRover Rangerover $100 000
Porsche Cayenne $80 000
2011 BMW M3 $96 000
2012 BMW 6-Series $80 000 around
Aston Martin One-77 $1.7mil
Aston Martin DBS $290 000 around
2011 Audi S5 $75 000
Chevrolet Corvette C5R Racecar $?
Audi R8 Racecar (older one) $?
2011 Mercedes-Benz SL500 $120 000
Ferrari 458 Italia $287 000
Mclaren F1 $1 000 000
Mclaren MP4 $250 000
Lotus Elise $70 000
Dodge Viper GTSR Concept $?

The cars will be scattered around my garage and there will be enough space to drive out of garage swirving through my other cars.

I'm thinking two storey with a showroom on the bottom floor and a workshop on the top to fettle with the cars.

Not exactly the most imaginative I will admit but I think that would go down well.

I'd strike that layout and reverse it. Big machines cost less to put down low. Besides, you don't want oil and stuff leaking through the top floor down onto your nice clean showroom. it just works so much better having the nice space on top.

You could build it into a hill, so you could drive the cars into and out of the showroom.

^ Yeah that'd work.

My Ideal/Dream Garage? Layout, tools, things to use, and more?! :dopey: :D 💡 OK... this.... *(Apologize for all the I woulds!) I would have something with all the tools to work on my vehicles. I would have all of the line of Snap-On tools at my hand. I would have tools to go as far as to rebuild a car from scratch (like a 69 Mach 1 Mustang or a brand new GT-R :sly:) and just like a real shop/dealer all the computers and everything to run a car shop. I would have the wireless internet setup and DirectTV at the ready. Home wise, I would have a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom with a basement, attached to the barn/garage. As for a racetrack, I like Keef's idea with Ebisu and Tsukuba.. but I would replicate the Indy Road Course and Indy Moto GP course (minus the oval and seats) with some elevation changes built in. Now for the garage, an exact replica of Gasoline Alley, attached to the house. (Maybe I'll put a pagoda in there. House top as shaped as the Pagoda?) Its that simple because I've always have liked the Indianapolis Motor Speedway so why I wouldn't want to replicate that?! :D Carlist... see other. ;) :sly: --- Randy

1) Spot with lift and area to comfortably work on the car.

2) Section of garage for painting whole cars, ventilation, heating and so on.

3) Zombie survival vehicle. Probably a diesel powered FJ60/62, heavily modified to be modern (staying away from electronic/computer controlled anything that will render the vehicle inop or "limp mode"), reliable, capable offroad/on and armoured. Geared with survival gearing. Projectile, cutting, bludgening and flame weapons. Two fuel tanks and spare containers. Food/water for me, my dog and my girl for 1 month always loaded and freshened. First aid kit, tools and spare parts for likely failure/wear parts. No, this is not joking.

4) Late 60's Mustang Fastback. Matte black, completely reworked from the ground up to be modern, fast, safety and cornering, but keeping the overall original look except for being lowered and wheels....and the interior reworked to be very modern with nav, BT, bolstered seats, racing style flat bottem steering wheel with airbag, full leather (of course black) and so on. This would be my daily driver. If I could have a second one, that one would be completely stock.

5) VW 21 window deluxe microbus restored to stock condition with the safari pop-out windows and rack.

+Outside in the weather.....a brand new, top of the line, big ass American dually truck. Yes, fishing pole/gun rack.

++ Outside in the weather....a worn out sub $1000 SUV or truck that looks like a piece of **** that no one will ever break into. This would be my vehicle I use if I go hiking, mountain biking, rafting....generally if I gotta leave the car parked in some sucluded area and I don't want to have any worries about vandels or theft.
