See, I came in here anticipating a slight discussion of how we'd like our actual garages to be... That'd be an interesting thread, I'd venture. Tools, benches, decoration (!!!)... Awesome.
That's what I thought too. I third the hijack!
My garage would be an integral part of my house, actually.
The building itself would be made of fancy brick, would have a bottom floor, middle floor, and roof level. The bottom floor would be the garage, the middle level the living area, and the top floor would house a pool (one helluva top floor), deck, and generally be a big party area.
The garage would be a pass-through design similar to some car dealership shops. I've planned it to fit in a lot just up the hill from my house and it would look similar to the lawncare warehouse place next door, which is decidedly un-residential.
The layout: From the road, the building would be deeper than it is wide. There would be a driveway wrapping around the entire building connected to one entrance at the road. There would be large industrial garage doors on the front and back of the building so you could drive straight through it. On one side would be two 2-post lifts and one alignment machine, along with a tire changing machine, work benches, toolboxes, etc. The would be angled toward the rear of the building, meaning the rear would actually be the entrance. Easier access and whanot. On the other side would be a lounge area with couches, a TV, video games, beverages, refrigerator, you name it, along with an empty area to park a couple cars. At the very rear of my lot would be a row of garages, 6 cars wide, where I would park any other cars like friends who came to stay or whatever.
Mind you, I'm no architect, so I have no idea what sort of structure would be required to hold up a 40,000 gallon should-be-in-ground pool
above a house, but I'm sure it would be substantial. It's doable! Just in case, I would have a stainless steel roof-under-the-roof inside a nifty looking "crawl space" between the house roof and the underside of the pool.
The idea for putting it at the top of the hill would be the view. You can see for miles up there, and even see downtown Dayton off in the distance. It would be spectacular waking up in the morning, walking out to my enormous living room and gazing through the floor-to-ceiling, full-width bay window to see that view. Holy cow.
This would end up being quite the tall little building, what with an industrial-height garage roof, 10 foot stepped ceilings in the house, crawl space under the pool, and then the 8-foot deep pool itself and structure for the roof level, and the optional glass roof that would cover it during winter. Spectacular, no?
