I'm pakistani by birth but I HATE my culture.
read on only if you want to know why I hate Pakistani culture...
Pakistani adults are FAR too nosy and on top of that, they have a tendency to overinflate the slightest events. I get a small wipeout riding my bike, they call my parents a bit later saying I got hurt very very badly and that I shouldn't be allowed to hang out with the people I'm normally with.
One of my best friends, because of how many people in our community know her parents, can't be caught dead around me on the trains and certain parts of the city because these adults will call her parents and all their friends saying we're going out - WTF man...I used to have the same problem in the US because almost EVERY Pakistani person had some ties with my dad.
Almost EVERY pakistani person I know LOVES to gossip and jealousy isn't uncommon either. That's why I avoid my own people - they overdo things, they love to show off and they are, in general, nothing more than total fricking snobs and spoiled brats. The very few that aren't like that are the only ones I can get along with and generally end up becoming some of my closest friends because they are, in the end, good people.
Combine that with the fact that in my culture, the only way I can go out with a girl is to get engaged (no way in hell I'm doing that till I find the right girl). But if you get engaged, the girl's parents will FORCE you to get married asap and you won't get a chance to get to know her at all. Plus, marriages in my culture suck. It's like 5-10 ceremonies before the couple is officially married and can live together. Only 2 or 3 are required by my religion - each has it's significance and they can all be combined to one if you'd like.
Did I mention that traditional pakistanis are WAAAY too overprotective? I break my wrist once and I'm grounded for life from snowboarding. My parents wouldn't let me go out of town for university (luckily for me, the schools I took interest in were in the same town).
Overall, my culture makes ZERO sense to me and I can't seem to understand how or why the adults can be so nosy and gossipy.
