I have some cash to spend, around £100 infact, that i can spend on anything, and i've decided to get a new phone. Don't get me wrong, i love my nokia 3220, well almost anyway. I like it's screen and camera, and it's flashy lighty things, but i really want something with bluetooth and/or a bigger memory. I've had my heart set on an O2 X3 for a while now. When i got my current phone back in december, the X3 was over £200, and I only had £70 to spend, so i went for the nokia, but now i've seen it for £99 in a catalogue store. I love it because:

  • It's a flip phone
  • It has a 1.3mpixel camera
  • It has bluetooth
  • It has upgradable memory by means of a mini sd card
  • It has an mp3 player/ringtones
  • And it looks good :D
But, i've been looking at some reviews, and it seems that around 50% of all the reviews are bad ones, with many claiming to be on their 3rd replacement allready. This has stalled me quite considerably. After having "that laptop" for 6 months of problems, i know what it is like to have faulty goods, and i don't want it to happen again. Just incase anybody is wondering, it's not made by O2, it's made by BenQ, and O2 stick their logo on it.

So, i've had a look around, and i really can't find anything to match it's features. The only thing that comes close is a motorola v545 and clones, or a sharp gx25. Now, don't get me wrong, the motorola is ok, but i'd prefer to keep my money if that is the only thing on offer. However, i saw a sharp GX25 for £60 in a phoneshop the other day, so i'm considering that.

Can anyone give me a background on those phones, or recommend anything else? Any help is appreciated,

Thanks

Jon

I'll report back later ;)

How about getting a phone on contract?

Well, i don't really use it enough. Pay as you go is better for me. However, t mobile ufix contract/pay as you go looks interesting

I did just see a Nokia 6230 for £130, which looks good to me. That's on pay as you go with orange, who tend to seel stuff cheaper.

How much do you usually talk on it for a day?

It's more like 5 times a week, and those are like 15 second conversations like "where are you". If i want to talk to anybody for longer, i just use msn or skype.

But i play with it more than anything, y'know, taking pictures and video, that kinda thing.

EDIT* I like the look of the orange spv c5000. The only bad reviews seem to be about it being on orange, and when converting to 02 they loose the ability to go on the internet, but that doesn't bother me - i bought my current phone on orange, unlocked it, and i can't use the gprs or wap, but that doesn't bother me. If i want to download anything, i put in the orange sim instead. I've seen it for around £140, but i think it's cheaper instore - i saw it for £120 when i was buying my current phone in december.

I've also been looking into new cell phones and have come to the conclusion that the Sony Ericsson K700 is a pretty sweet buy. They have recently taken a huge drop in price. It has all the features and a GREAT screen.

In Belgium they're available from € 190 (€175 with turn in of an older phone).

Yeah, i'm looking at that aswell, but over here, i can get an orange spv for about the same. I think that'll probably be what i go for, but if the spv is all out of stock, i'll be after the k700;)

Haven't used the 700 but I recently purchased an F500 and I have to agree that SE nowadays have excellent screens in their phones. If you can afford it the k750 should be the best one with it's impressive 2mpix camera and loads of other goodies.

I was looking at the F500 also, but the K750 looks awesome! Sadly, i can't find it on pay as you go :grumpy:

most phones with pay as you go wont be great. I have the motorola e815 it's got all the features you wanted in the first place and i got it for 99 bucks.

god i'm a moron. It might not be available in europe...i dont think verizon wireless is there...not sure

If you can afford to buy the K750, don't. Get the W800 instead. Same phone, same camera, same screen. But you get 512Mb Duo card and a built in seperate MP3 player function that you can use even when the phone's turned off. I'm getting one next, upgrading from K700 so i know i'm gonna get a good phone as the K700 is v. good. Also the W800 looks better than the K750 imo :p

Nice that it has the walkman logo

So, do you recommend the k700? It'll have to be pretty good to beat the spv smartphone though ;)

EDIT

I think it's time we compared features:

Now that's some features! Btw, i think they got the bit where it says music playback wrong- that's what windows media player is for!

Actually, that's a little confusing, so here's a link to the site it came from.

My mate has the Sharp GX25 and it is great. The only downside is that you can't pause the video :D Essential when having a good laugh.

[edit] Yeah that is weird. It says it can't play video and yet it comes packeged with a video player. :

Ok, thanks! That's one of the other phones i am considering at the moment ;)

Right, time to sort out what i am considering

1. Orange SPV C500 smart phone (i've practically bought it already)
2. Sharp GX25 (i've seen for less than £90)
3. Sony Ericsson K700
4. Nokia 6230
5. Open to suggestions

I think you should add this...

I received my Sony Ericsson K750i in the mail today. And it's better than I had expected! Coming from quite a few Nokias, I'm still getting used to the small-ish keypad. But other than that it's great!

I'd recommend this phone to anyone.

You should have waited for their new S-series that replaces the S700i.. Had the K750i it's nice phone but I traded it for a 6680..

Ok, the k750 looks like a good buy, and i saw an advert for it on TV last night. Apparently the camera has auto focus. Anyway, i's now a close run between that and the spv, with the gx25 just behind. I'm going to look around some phone shops today, and see how the prices compare.

Will report back.

I have a Sony Ericsson P910i, it costs about £400 handset only but its about £50 on a contract.

It has a massive touch screen, FIVE methods of text imput (qwerty keyboard, on screen keyboard, Graffiti, dictated, and the normal keyboard.)

The screen makes the camera look pretty crappy, for me this doesnt matter as I will only buy a phone for its camera when the have adjustable appertures.

You can get great games for it, these include V Rally, Strategic Assualt, Nightmare, Tetris, and above all TTI Football which is made great by the large touch screen.

It takes MSDuo, It has good battery life for a smart phone, an MP3 player, a video function, a calculator, and an excellent calender.

It has both Word and Excel and you can buy all of the office Suite for it, it also has a PDF reader.

The clock shows the time in well over 200 countries and also shows the countries main cities and capital.

It has all the features you would expect on an excellent phone, bluetooth, mms etc...

This IS the greatest phone ever!!!

Meh, i have a P800 and it's ok, but isn't that great really. The P910 looks much better, but i still wouldn't advise people to get it if you just want a phone.

Flame: Have a look around for the game Doom for your P910. I've got it on my P800 and it's awesome. Controls are tough, but you get Doom on your phone (on that screen!).

Still sn00p, it's good to hear how good the K750 is, can't wait till September! New W800 and PSP :p

OK, i was taking a look around, and they had run out of spv c500s, but they were getting more stock in a few days time. It's £110 on pay as you go, once you've traded in your old phone for £30. I had a look at the other phones, and the sony k750 is just awesome. Sadly, it's over £200, so i can't afford it :(, but the k700 also looks great, and available for £100 not including trade in :). So, i've still decided to go for one of the spvs, either the c500 or the c550, probably the c500. Although i did see an o2 x3 for £50 .....

Ok, I just did another extensive search and came up with some new finds. As of right now, my preference goes out to the Siemens CX70. It's worth taking a look at! I'll list a few of the phones that I'm now considering.

Siemens CX70;
Pros: CHEAP, IRDA, TFT screen, 11MB, PUSH AND TALK function

Samsung E340;
Pros: TFT Screen, 40MB, looks good
Cons: Expensive (too new), No IRDA

Nokia 6101;
Pros: TFT, IRDA, FM
Cons: Expensive (too new)

Panasonic x70

Mitsubishi M342i

SE K700i

/Note: In order to get on this list, these phones all answer to some of my demands.

Ahh yes, the panasonic x70 has been something i've been admiring for a while, but i couldn't find it on sale anywhere :(. I also liked the seimens cx70, but i don't like the menus on seimens phones. I don't know what it is about them, but i just hate them. I like the samsung too, but it doesn't have bluetooth, so it's a no. The same goes with the nokia 6101 i liked it, but it cost 3 times as much as the o2 x3, and it doesn't have bluetooth. And we don't get mitusbishi phones over here. But, the sony ericsson k700 is definately something i am considering. It's got everything i need, along with a beatiful screen and good camera, andit feels so good quality. I'm between that and the o2 x3 now, so i'll compare.

O2 X3

Pros: Flip phone, bluetooth, memory card 1.3mpixel camera, big high quality screen, looks good imao, so very cheap to buy, on the network i want, mp3 player

Cons: Feels a little cheap but i don't care, reputation for breaking, 1.3mpixel is a bit optimistic.

SE K700

Pros: Looks great, feels great quality, camera, bluetooth, fantastic screen, under £100, lots of brilliant reviews to back it up, mp3

Cons: More expencive than the 02 x3, doesn't have removable memory, nor the amount of memory.

So, it's a very close match between these two, but i have decided what to do. Well, i've seen the o2 x3 for £50 in 1 phoneshop, and if they have any left, that's what i'll get. If they don't have any, i'm torn between the £90 k700, or paing £10 more forthe 02 x3. I think i will have to try out the phones before i make a decision if it comes to that.
