Your Top 10 Favorite Fighter Aircraft.

Not to de-rail the thread but I've just been reading up on the A-10 (for the first time in years).

It seems to be one of those aircraft that polarises opinions in that experienced miltary types either love it or loathe it. The 'love it' camp appear to be those who've been supported by it during combat whereas the 'loathe it' camp take a more technical slant.

I still think it's a great looking aircraft (so ugly it's beautiful, if you catch my drift) with a very 'authorative' weapon but for CAS (Combat Air Support) it's a one hit wonder with short legs and poor target recognition (my word choice isn't intended to cause offence by the way, I'm just writing quickly due to 'boss oversight' :D).
 
Wait a minute! I've been a fan of A-10 since I was in grade school, but isn't this supposed to be your top 10 favorite fighter aircraft? You guys already know what "A" in A-10 stands for.

I was uncertain about my pick of the A-6 and I think it's right that I should pick another if we're talking fighters (tho' the A6 could hold it's own in the air).

So I'll go for the F-86 - a great plane (altho' I am tempted by the 'Thud' too ;eek:!).

Great pick. ;) F-86 and Mig-15 crossed my mind, while making my list.

Which one's "Thud", btw?
 
The F-105 Thunderchief - nicknamed the 'Thud' because of its habit of forcefully exploring the air-ground interface :D.

F/4 Phantom

F/16 Falcon

And I think the WWII one is a P-51 Mustang.

Don't know the other one though.
 
A mosquito? Or Hornet?

Yessir, that is correct. It's a P-51, P_38, F/15 and F/4. It was at the EAA air show. The F/4 and F/15 did solo passes right above the runway at 300-400 mph, nearly blew your ears out :p

I'll bet the noise was fabulous Iceman.

For me the most thunderous noise I've ever felt was watching a Harrier 'bowing' or maybe the time I saw a Vulcan coming in over the shore from the sea. Talk about bass rumble :lol:.

The best/most amusing flyby was watching a twin-element of Tornado's doing a runway pass on full afterburner - every car/house alarm for miles around went off :eek:!

That doesn't look like an F15 to me. More like an F16. It's single engined.

I'd vote the C-17 Globemaster and C-130 deserve honourbale mention IMO just for being great work horses.

Does anybody know if the F/4 Phantom is still used?
 
I think it is still in some use in the Far East.

My dad also loves the F-4 phantom and I've been within yards of one in a museum display.
 
The Fleet Air Arm Museum.
I've also been to the Yorshire Air Museum which had WW2 planes and some 80-early90s jets.

Also Bovington tank museum had some aircraft, though mainly light helicopters.
 
My favorite jet of all time is the SR-71 Blackbird, hands down. Such a beautiful plane, all around.
 
I've been to the Fleet Air Arm a few times when I was younger. I have a cottage not far from there. I sat in the F-4 as well as a few helicopters.

It also has the 002 Concorde which, when I was there, you could walk through. It was really cool.

It was geat to go inside as it was only shortly after the news that they would be stopping Concorde flights.

Was the "aircraft carrier flight deck display" there then?

Kinda lucky to go. You see we were stuck for time and could only visit the FAA or the royal signal corps museum, which was especially important because my grandfather served with them.

But luckily my dad chose the FAA and kept the signal corps for another day.

#1--F-14--FOREVER the best. 120+ mile range on a Phoenix missile? Still unmatched.

F-35 JSF (World's first supersonic harrier. Pretty bad--look it up!)

The A-10 is an Attack plane. The F/A-18 is a Fighter/Attack plane. But did anyone know the gun on an A-10 is the size of a Volkswagen beetle, not even counting the barrel? And it will make the aircraft stall if it is fired for too long. The shells are made from spent uranium--the heaviest thing they could come up with that wouldn't microwave the pilots and weapons crew. And they've done tons better than the Apaches have--that's why the Army dropped the Comanche program. The A-10s can still fly with less than half a wing left, and are much more mobile and can carry more than the choppers.

Anyone place Ace Combat around here? AC04 maybe?

Isn't the Apache still used though?
 
F35 and F22 are fighters of the (near) future, but untill they proove themselves I won't list them.

Have they dropped the commanche project!? That thing looked hot! :drool:
