NFS Shift and Shift 2 are exaggerated in terms of Cockpit.
It has too much blur effects and the Sound is too "loud" (see in the comparison video posted on page one).
A Stock Lambo is a Audi from inside. You hear the engine etc. but you could listen to the Radio while driving and that is well transfered in GT5 (muffeled sound).
The stock Lambo hasn´t got such a dominant tranny-whine like in the comparison video (maybe it is not stock ??).
Well I still think Shift 2 is a good-great Game and delivers tones of fun; If they worked on the Physics (issue I had with Shift1).

Oh man, that's not so nice. But I have a good solution for this: You have to drink a biiig "counter-beer" or something similar. Maybe a bloody mary? That helps me always 👍

Maybe you're right. Was trying to kill the buzz with GT5. lol

How much of a 'problem' are they? Are they detrimental to the enjoyment of the game or just less realistic but adding to the fun? I'm looking for a balanced view beyond "omg teh physics is teh suX0rz!" to manage my expectations...

^ This. If it loses a bit on the realism front and it more addictive I would go for it. I've never driven a lambo so I can at best speculate. The sounds in Shift 2 are pretty dynamic and do convince me I'm driving a race car.

Handling on Shift 2 looks loose. I'll still buy the game and see how it turns out.

If you can turn off that stupid cockpit shaking thing in shift 2 it could be good, no real car jolts forward and back like that LOL I watch a lot of motorsport and no just no.

not really comparable. GT5 is rather a simulation and S2 is rather an arcade game.
Sure sound and visuals are better in S2 but for me the sound and the visuals "must" not be the source of the fun.... !
The video in the OP is also biased of course. The GT5 clip is completely off (only a low speed corner, no force feedback, sound turned down...)

Maybe i buy S2 but it wont replace GT5

I bought the game and at first was very frustrated with it because of the physics. They were touting about how it was "real racing". I realize now that they meant the immersion part of racing and not so much the physics of it. The most annoying part of the game is the fact that cars basically don't respect your line at all. If they are coming into a corner behind you and going a bit faster, they'll ram the **** out of you and it is restart time.

Most races are one mistake and you're done. I am still in the low end of the career mode (racing cars around 1000 PI (performance index)). Now that I've had a few days to play the game, I have started warming up to it. There are a TON of races to do as well, which is very nice. Getting money for new cars is not that hard to do and they reward you for doing a variety of things well. For example, following the racing line, mastering a corner, performing clean passes, having a "perfect launch" at the start of a race and other things of that nature.

I would say this game is worth it if you want something to do when you are bored of racing in GT5 but the handling may frustrate you in the end.

I did post a very pessimistic comment on Jordan's front page post but that was from only about an hour with the game.

on the SHIFT forum, i have never read a good, 100% responsive set up for ps3 version + g27 not like the pc version that's why i didn't get this

In that first video I thought "Live Action" looked best. When is that out? :sly:
:):):):):):):)

That first video would have been more convincing if they'd compared apples with apples.... same track, cars etc. 2nd one was good.

That shift 2 forwards and backwards motion would make me puke after a while......

I totally agree.

The physics do look a bit weird in S2, as well.

True when actually driving your head doesn bobble like that or else racecar drivers would have plenty neck injuries.

Im goiing to buy shift two just because it seems to me more arcade-ish and seems like a game where i can beat in a weekend and feel somewhat the same wway when i beat all the other nfs games

My quick 2 cents for anyone who cares:

Graphics: Shift 2 looks pretty darn good when the cars have liveries on them, but suffers a lot more when the cars just have a single paint color. Overall the outside of the cars are much better in GT5, but the cockpit view seems about the same between the two (at a stop, before all the effects kick in).

Sounds: Shift 2 has great sound effects for the marbles, bottoming out, crashing, etc, but the in-car sound is way too loud for most cars. As someone said above, unless you strip out or put a nutso exhaust on most cars they will be quite quiet on the inside. The engine and tranny noise for stock cars is way too loud. On the other hand, it makes it more "intense" so I assume it was an intentional design choice.

Engine sounds in general could go either way. The corvette in Shift sounds way better than GT5s sound, but the GTI sounds like a clapped out civic in Shift and sounds much more accurate in GT5. Most of the cheaper cars have a generic chainsaw type noise, kind of a bummer.

Forza definitely looks the oldest of the three (because it is), but personally I think it still gets the job done quite well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not the car that's jolting but the driver. Shift 2 lets you see through the driver's eyes. Your TV motorsport camera is attached to the car not to the driver so it's obviously not the same.

Yep, that seems to be a point of confusion for a lot of people, and I don't really understand why.

Here is a helmet-cam video of a ring lap, looks pretty good to me (compared to shift). Also keep in mind that the car in the video has mild suspension upgrades, unlike the super stiff setup in race cars, so head shake would likely be much more in a GTx car.

The helmet cam in Shift is exaggerated, but I don't think it's as far off as people think it is.

I feel you, bruv. The fact is for all the visceral experience GT5 offers, some areas(read:collisions, deformation, shadows) are so muted it really hard to believe they are part of the same game.

Btw,I found this link. They say raw polys don't do jack for visual appeal. And the screenshots look ominous! :scared:

I get the feeling Shift 2 is a lot more atmospheric.

biggest gripe i have with cockpit view on gt5 is what the hell is the driver doing when he changes gear. Has he got no joints in his hands? His hand completely comes off the wheel when using paddle shift. Not really what paddle shift is meant to do!

The up and down, side to side movement looks fine. It's the lunging towards and away from the windscreen that looks naff (and vom inducing!). It might look like that if a shop dummy was in the driver seat, but most race drivers have muscles to stop that sort of thing!:)

As far as the head movement goes here is my thought. In most every motorsport out there a HANS devise is required before you are allowed on the track\course. HANS stands for Head And Neck Support therefor there is minimal head movement, making that movement in the video just silly! I could be way off base here but that is just my opinion. Shift does look like a cool arcade racer though.

2 very different games, but both are worth playing!

There's room enough for the both of them. They fill different niches. Graphics wise, GT5 is way cleaner looking (even menus and initial loading screens). But racing intensity is way higher in S2U.

You can definitely still move your head around a fair bit in a HANS device. They don't keep your head from bouncing around on bumps and curbs.

The forward/back motion from braking seems like the only part that's actually really exaggerated to me, and as I've said before, it was likely an intentional design choice to try and show the change in speed. I imagine going from 140 to 30 that quickly would have quite an effect on the way you perceived your surroundings.

Side note, you don't notice your head moving around as much when you're actually driving because your eyes/brain adapt and try to keep the image steady. I'm pretty sure that's why people get carsick.

I don't run on the track, but I'm sure when I auto-x my head is all over the place (relatively speaking) and I just don't notice it. I also paddle whitewater and my perception tells me that my head is generally fairly stable but a simple helmet cam video shows that it's obviously not the case.

No matter how fast I've ever driven, I never had a problem with seeing blurry like that. I hate cheeseball effects like that.

When you drive can you see your gauges/interior in perfect focus and the road ahead of you? It's an attempt at simulating that.
