PlayStation will be allowing all players with a PlayStation account free access to online multiplayer this coming weekend.
Throughout the weekend of December 18-19, from a minute after midnight on Saturday until a minute before midnight on Sunday, in your local time zone, you’ll be able to access the online multiplayer modes of any of your games for free — as long-time PlayStation users will recall used to be the case back in the days of the PS3.
Ordinarily this would require a PlayStation Plus account, which comes in at a standard cost of $59.99 (£49.99/€59.99) for a full year, or for shorter periods at a slightly higher per-month cost starting at $9.99 (£6.99/€8.99) for a single month at a time.
As well as making online multiplayer available, PS Plus brings other benefits such as cloud storage, free games each month, and exclusive discounts.
For example, December 2021’s free games are Godfall (PS5/PS4), LEGO: DC Super Villains (PS4), and Mortal Shell (PS4), which you can download and play for free so long as you have an active PS Plus subscription — or regain access to if your subscription lapses and you later renew it. PlayStation is also reportedly looking into an expanded version of the service with free cloud gaming bundled in too.
This weekend’s offer doesn’t bring any of these benefits, just the ability to access the online multiplayer. However that gives players the opportunity to try out any of the multiplayer modes in any game across the entire PS4 and PS5 library.
That means that if, somehow, you’ve previously missed out on playing online races in Gran Turismo Sport, F1 2021, Assetto Corsa Competizione, or any other PlayStation racing title, now’s your chance to try it — and doubtless PlayStation is hoping you’ll like it and pick up a PS Plus subscription afterwards!
The free online weekend runs from December 18 at 0001 until December 19 at 2359 in your local timezone.
