After a little lull across spring, publisher and developer Genki is back with another update for Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s pre-release version.
Released earlier this year into Early Access, the update finally introduces Achievements to the game, giving players yet another reason to get behind the wheel and take in the sights.
Players now have 31 Achievements to obtain in-game, adding an exciting chase to pursue, the likes of which include “Twists and Turns”, awarding racers for winning a battle after colliding with a wall over ten times; “Car Enthusiast”, for expanding the garage to accommodate 10 rides, and “Instant Kill”, winning a battle in less than 30 seconds.
The new Achievements don’t represent the full list expected for the v1.0 release of TXR, but nonetheless give us a snapshot of what the final list will be — and an expectation of what we might see should the title make its way to ninth-gen consoles as anticipated:

Of course, Achievements aren’t the only things included in the update, with some neat technical changes and a few refreshes in the game’s UI to tempt players back.
That starts with a detail that Genki hadn’t originally planned to implement but, due to player feedback, has changed its mind. This sees additional rules for controlling water and oil temperature while driving implemented.
When enabled, both temperatures will increase depending on engine load and, if either gets hot enough, the engine will enter safe mode to prevent further damage and breakdown. While in safe mode, players will be unable to put the pedal to the metal use 100% of the car’s performance, as engine speed and output torque (among others) will be restricted.
Additionally, when these additional rules are active, tires will wear even during free roam sessions, but will be limited to a rate of 1/4 (or x0.25). On the upside, the rewards for defeating rivals with the rules active will increase by a factor of 1.5, considering the added challenge of having to manage both whilst driving. The additional rules can be found and enabled on the Garage screen.

Other improvements include a revised UI layout with the addition of the water and oil temperature gauges above the tachometer, though this will only be the case if the option itself is enabled.
Players will also now have an odometer and tripmeter to keep track of mileage while driving, a smaller nitro gauge, the effect of slipstream now being clearly visible, an on-screen indicator showing how much throttle, brake pressure and steering input being applied, as well as your CP and BP values.
If that weren’t enough, a few quality of life improvements are included as well, such as a “Team Defeated” visual to better illustrate when players have shown a rival their taillights, toggleable UI elements, horizontal or vertical gauge layout options, and a new blocking bonus when preventing a rival’s overtake.
For those opting to manually shift through the gears, an audio cue will now trigger when it’s time to do so. Players can also enjoy new randomized backgrounds that coincide with the daily sky patterns, though it will not have an effect on the road surface. Finally, there are new license plate names and the addition of Traditional Chinese in the game’s language options.
We have already passed the originally planned launch window of spring 2025 for Tokyo Xtreme Racer, but the title is now expected — on PC, in any case — in late-September, with the Early Access period continuing until launch.
