In GT2 the hp limit was such a laugh. I smoked everyone with my Daisin Silvia :D

I suppouse, about this "point", they can be in the Arcade Mode (or similar) for unlock new car or track in it... not when u finish a race (like in GT3) ...
It can be? 💡

-EDIT-
When u earned a lot u can spend it on a car, traks, etc.etc.etc. ... no?

You're taking this just a tad out of context. Think of it as being a point system on a 1-10 scale. So, if the lowest car in the race (besides you) is at 400HP, than anything above 400HP will earn you 10 points at the most, however, if you race with a car with say, 200 HP, you can earn more points, say 12, for that race, to give you an advantage, this is done so you can compete for points rather than have to get gold in all races with an underpowered car, you will be able to complete a series and stand a chance winning second/first in different races.

Again, it's not a penalty on those using strong cars, because it will be the same as GT3, however for those using lower powered cars, you will be able to earn more points, and it's a reward.

Not a bad thing.

Wow...where did you get that info from?

Wow...where did you get that info from?

Basically it's just taken exactly from what KY said, he never said it would penalize players with stronger cars, just that they would not get as many points as players with weaker cars. Granted the 1-10 point scale is a shot in the wind for me, but it seems logical, and I just used it to give a general idea, it makes it easier to visualize. But from what KY said you can expect something extremely similar.

New Info: Gran Turismo 4
By Andy Cheng -- Features Writer
Published 2:26 PM CDT, October 8, 2004

We've got some new details on the latest modes announced for the real driving simulator. Find out what to expect in December.

Just a few weeks ago at the 2004 Tokyo Game Show, the gaming world was shocked as Sony revealed that Gran Turismo 4 would cut online play to make a 2004 release date. However, a new GT game will be released sometime in 2005 with online play. Despite that disappointing announcement, the latest edition of the popular franchise is poised to continue the legacy of racing authenticity that has made the series world-renowned and hugely successful, with over 36 million units sold worldwide.

No online play, but do you really need it?Gran Turismo has always been about the human passion for cars. Two brand new modes have been created for Gran Turismo 4 to further give gamers a chance to enjoy the car culture beyond simply racing. GT Director Mode / B-Spec plants you into the role of a race team manager where you give directions to an A.I. racer in competitive races. You'll be able to tune cars prior to races, order the A.I. when to overtake the competition, and when to come in for a pit stop. Pit stops will be critical as you can tweak a variety of car settings on the fly, such as tires and volume for fuel or refueling.

The other mode is Photo Mode, which allows players to take in-game photos and print them out using a USB printer. Two formats are presented in this mode: Photo Drive and Photo Travel. Photo Drive basically lets you take snapshots of your car at any point during a race so that you can take advantage of neat effects like depth of field and motion blur. Photo Travel provides the equivalent of glamour shots, as you bring your favorite car to any of 15 exotic, picturesque locations around the world and position the car from a variety of angles for striking poses.

But of course, gamers can also look forward to Gran Turismo's acclaimed racing modes to indulge their love for driving. GT Arcade Mode is where you can enjoy the fruits of your hard work as you race your friends or the A.I. with the cars and tracks you have unlocked by playing GT Career Simulation. The GT Career Simulation Mode is the heart of the game and starts you off at the bottom, challenging you to display your racing prowess as you progress up the ladder. You'll have to win races to buy new cars and upgrade parts as you make your way through over 200 championship races.

A couple of new features have been added to this mode. A new race style involves completing specific missions throughout the duration of the race to win. The new "high score" system has also been incorporated, which grades the racer on how well he drives and how he puts his skills to the test by comparing elements of his car (such as car type and horsepower) against the rest of the field.

Over 650 cars spanning the entire history of the automobile industry from more than 80 manufacturers are playable in Gran Turismo 4. With so many cars to choose from, it can be hard to find a favorite! All of these cars are fully customizable from racing gears to gear ratio, not to mention superchargers and NOS that reflect the latest craze in car culture. Accompanying this abundance of vehicles are approximately 100 tracks, divided into closed circuit, city, and rally courses with a variety of settings. Have you ever wished to drive along the Grand Canyon or to tackle the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife track in Germany? You can now fulfill your daydreams.

You can capture phots of in-game action too!Ever in pursuit of the ultimate driving simulation, Polyphony Digital has upgraded Gran Turismo 4 with brand new physics engines and enhanced A.I. Every car handles differently, taking into account various factors such as weight, speed, friction, and wind. Graphical quality has also been improved; each vehicle now sports more than 5,000 polygons, and replay mode has been refined for a broadcast-quality look.

Even without online play, Gran Turismo 4 should be highly anticipated by anybody who loves cars. For the next level of racing authenticity, look no farther. Gran Turismo 4 is scheduled for a release on December 14, 2004. We'll have more on GT4 in the near future.

None of that's "new", it's just a rehash of the TGS news. It'll probably be "new" for a couple months, as various magazines and such actually publish it.

I think that if this is the case then it will make gt last even longer and make it even harder if you are a cheating s**t to me it seems like the old method but now with a penalty for using a more powerfull cars for example, in GT3 you were restricted to what races you could enter but if you did your homework on the cars then you could almost find a way to cheat you way to victory with no penalty (in fact they gave you the full amount of credits and a new car for the pleasure) but with this new system you will still be able to cheat but when you finish a race you wont have the amount of credits needed to get either a new car of tune your older cars, so say you want to to get your hands on a brand spanking new super car then you will have to be a real gluten for punishment and race with a naff car to get those points needed, but if you try and cheat then you will have do the races over and over again to reach the same goal, also it sort of levels the playing field out, if you start with a naff car to begin with the you will have to race in hard races to begin with but if you eventually start to race in races with fasrter cars then eventually you will have an ok car for the beginer races but not for harder races and then you will have a hard time racing in them and you wont have got enough points to tune your car up to be competative and so you have do it hard for a while, basically the game will have a easy to hard level of play depending on your choices thus making it a game that is tailor made to fit you. :)

The info doesn't say anything about credits, it simply refers to points. I'm thinking these are two different things. Credits will be won as normally, allowing you to upgrade your car, etc. But the points system will also come into play very heavily, I think... In order to access certain cars or certain championships, you'll need to have a certain number of points. Which may take a hundred "cheap" (cheating) races to earn, or only ten "good" (even) races. And the game will probably reward you every so often.. like in GT3, where they gave you a new car on your way through the game as you hit a certain % complete.

Fact is, we just don't know how it's going to work. Probably won't know until the game is actually released, unless PD does more press releases before the game's out.

As for the competition thing.. I tend to agree.. The races are more fun when you have to work at them, to really drive your way to victory. But on the flip side, it can sometimes get extrememly frustrating to be perfectly matched with the opposition and unable to pick up a single position (Vitz race, anyone? Took me weeks to win that one). I'm starting to find that in the new TOCA game.. I'll start off the race in 6th, and finish in 6th, no matter how hard I drive. So there are times when frustration would lead me to pull out a more powerful car to beat a potentially difficult race. But, I'd pay the price in points.. it's a trade-off, and may yeild a new level of depth to the game.

But they did explain that online mode isn't the most important part of the game.

Some of us already knew that, though. :) I've known it since online was first mentioned, all those years ago. :)

You shouldn't use the force for your own purposes!!

No, really, I find it very surprising how you've known all along that online wasn't going to be a main feature. As KY said it would be.

But they did explain that online mode isn't the most important part of the game.

No wonder, because they still want to sell it to us. If online mode was still in they would say it was one of the more important things in the game. This is called marketing I heared somewhere. :p

Thats why Granturismoworld doesn't mention the canceling of the online mode, but focusses on B-spec mode etc.

I never said it wasn't *a* main feature, I was simply agreeing with Cosmic's statement that it wasn't THE main feature of the game. GT has always been about the cars, and the driving. That hasn't changed, just because one feature isn't there.

Besides, this was a NEW feature.. I still don't see how people can "miss" something that was never there to begin with.

I agree, I misread your previous post :)

Although offtopic: Multiplayer was allready in GT3. As well in the form of splitscreen as lan play. The concept is not new for GT. But that's just nitpicking :p

I personally think that you'll win prize money/credits as in previous iterations of GT. Whatever car you choose to win this money/credits won't matter.

However, points will come into it. Dependant on which car you choose to gain the money/credits will reflect in the amount of points you receive for that race. The main purpose behind points is so people can compare their completion of the game in a different way.

One could be 67% complete with 12765 points while another could be 56% at 13075points. Therefore is can be seen that the second player has been using more disadvantaged cars (lesser HP) to complete their game, while the first player has chosen cars to do the races that gives them an easier ride.

That's just IMO of how it will all work.

I sure hope it works well, but I'm causious. The polyphony team is in my opinion not very good in bringing ballance to a game. Think rewardsystem GT3.

they cant be too bad at eh? i mean.. if there balancing skill were game breakingly bad would we all be here drooling over every new screenie we get shown?

I don't think the people are drooling over game balance when they look at pretty screens. Maybe it's just me...

nononono.. i mean the fact the games this highly anticipated is due to the previous ones being so good.

I don't think people shoud nit pick these points as much as they are, again if you read what was said in context it's very simple, my 1-10 scale works fine.

No one ever said there was a penalty for using strong cars, ever...not once. It was simply stated that you would not get at many points as the weaker car. So here we go again...again this is only because the statement about points has been taken out of context...repeatedly.

okay, lets' say the strongets car in the race is 400hp, so any car above 400hp can only earn a maximum of 10 points, minimum of 1.

However, let's say for each...50hp under the set 400 bar of the strongest car, you earn 1 more point.

So with that said, if you are in first place, with a 300hp car, you will earn 12 points instead of 10.

This is all guess work with numbers, but the system should be very similar, based on what has been said, nothing here has been assumed (except numbers)...so take it for what it's worth..if that.

So you're suggesting that this points system will only apply to Championships? Sort of like the JGTC penalty system (where weights are added for Pole Position, fastest practice session, previous results, etc) but changing the points system so the penalties are a bit more accurate and ... penalising? So if you have an unfair advantage of, say 50bhp, you won't get as many championship points, but if you're under-powered you'll get a few more? That might work.

Come to think of it, I quite like that idea.

After reading the info that cudadude posted, I think you may be right...I was confusing points w/ credits.
