One of Obama's save-the-environment-and-the-economy-by-wishful-thinking programs was called "cash for clunkers." A qualifying old car could be traded in for a new car, and the government would pay up to $4500 (or whatever the number actually was) of the new car's price, on top of whatever deal you actually arranged with the dealer. The old car would be junked. The pitch was that new car sales would skyrocket, and the environment would be saved by modern cars replacing ancient pollution-spewing clunkers on our roads. Of course, the dealers fixed all their numbers to accomodate the government rebate and the consumer saved little, if any, actual money.
