I think I understand the fascination anime/manga artists have with big swords - they want to throw the laws of physics into a shredder.
 
It's just a show; Inuyasha wields it just fine after that whole "feel your sword" gig and suddenly the wielder can control it more freely and effectively bs....

They aren't really throwing physics out the window... Would you want to see every single swordsman using katanas? How boring is that?! That's exactly why fictional characters wield bigger weapons.
 
Watch Rurouni Kenshin, you'll see what problems a big sword can be (This happens in the early episodes.). Sanosuke can do only one attack, and not all that fast. Kenshin was able to beat him due to this fact since he was faster, and had a way lighter weapon.
 
You're totally not understanding the bigger picture... ANYONE knows that using a bigger sword is obviously going to be slow.
 
Well depending on the user. Ichigo in Bleach can use his big sword pretty well, just as if he was using a regular sword.

Very interesting article right here. It's rare for anime (Mainly due to it being a niche market here.) to get spotlighted like that in The New York Time's website.

Also, that Asuka picture on the front cover is so adorable I will not only say HNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGG here but I actually HNNNNNNNNGGGGGd in real life too. :3 :D :) <3 So many more emotions of adorable could go here.
