I just got a new ps3 slim since my old one(fat model) died from the ylod. The old one has all my save data and won't turn on at all. How do I get my save data from that one to my new ps3?:guilty:

At this point, you may be best served trying the hairdryer trick just to get the old one running long enough to get your save data to a usb drive. Do a Google search for "PS# YLOD Hairdryer Trick." There are about 2 dozen slightly different methods but they are the same at their root. This is a VERY temporary fix, so once you get it back up (if you do) get everything off it ASAP.

Sadly Neon I had this same issue with my 40GB Phatty.

With alot of searching and reading forums it is not possible to plug one hdd out of the old PS3 and into the new one. Something with encrypted data and setup for that one and only PS3 console.

After spending $300 AUD on a new PS3 I decided to get the old PS3 repaired by a Sydney repair agent. It cost me $140 AUD and a week later and my old 40GB Phatty was working. SO I immediately backed up my old phatty PS3, performed a Restore from Backup (which will format the new slim PS3) and I was able to recover my saved game. I got a friend buying my old PS3 off me, so I'm kinda lucky there.

Might I suggest you Google YLOD/RROD repairers in your local town/capital city.

I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, but are there any game saves that I can just use? I don't have the money to do that aneyh, nor do I have anyone with a fat ps3 I can use to access my files. GT5 is the only game I want my data back for, but if I can't do that are there any saves that have things unlocked already?

No, you can't use someone else game save.

I surprised to hear that people aren't using the game save to a USB option. I back up my games save at least once a week, but probably more often than that.

Personally, I'd just start the game over since it is a lot easy to make money now with the seasonal races. I just started another profile on my PS3 since I've reach level 40 and with in a couple hours I have over a million dollars in the bank.

You are unable to plug your hdd into another ps3 thats the same model, tried that and it also doesn't work.

Now after my YLOD issue, I will be making regular back ups once a week.

Try gamefaqs for some saved games.

A few hours? What did you play on?

sadly I already tried that and it didn't work

You require a heat gun and patience...it should work if done correctly. Im on fix #5. (My other 2 fat PS3s and 3 friends PS3s). Knock on wood, to date they all still work except for my current #5 I have in pieces. Including my other personal PS3 that is now on over a year after the "fix".

That doesnt work the new PS3 will format it straight away.

What about using a PC as a bridge? I don't know what kind of HDs are in PS3s, but if he has an open bay on his PC, can he jack it in there and pull the data off? I know you can copy the GT5 save data to a PC and then transfer it to another medium without corruption because I have done it. The question is will the PC recognize the HD and will be able to do something intelligent with the file system? That I do not know.

The HDDs are not all designed the same way. For instance a 2nd gen Fat PS3 HDD will not work in a 3rd gen Fat PS3 and vise versa. Im pretty sure, but have not checked, that a Fat PS3 (any gen) will not fit a Slim PS3. I would actually have to remove my slim HDD to prove this though. I Do know this info as I have 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen PS3s and have rebuilt the older 2. To my knowledge, the Slims should be interchangeable.

Yes it should be universal with all PS3's b/c the HDD is just a 2.5'' SATA, so it will work for any PS3, no matter the generation.

Nope :grumpy:, b/c first you'd need a Mac b/c it reads pretty much any HDD format, but sadly even if you did the PS3 encodes the HDD in a way that no computer can read it. I've tried, and also with the hairdryer trick, try doing it for 25-30 mins instead of 15, thats what I did.

I did this to my PS3, took it apart and reapplied the thermal paste, etc, and knock on wood, its been going for about 2 1/2 months so far, with a total age of 4 1/2 years old. :D

👍 this. 15 is definitely not enough. And make sure it is upside down. If I understand the mechanics of the procedure: (1) 15 minutes is just not enough to soften the solder unless your hairdryer doubles as a blast furnace; (2) if it isn't upside down you're actually making things worse, as gravitational force will loosen things further rather than re-seating them.

Its not the HDD itself...its the design and the way it is mounted in the different PS3s...not to mention the compartments are different. Ill try to remember to take a picture for you so you can see what im saying. Maybe there is way to make it work or maybe your more knowledgeable than me idk...didnt try that hard. Only reason I tried is after I did a reflow on the 3rd gen I wanted to see if it worked and to ensure the HDD was still good, but didnt want to wait forever for the new operating system to download onto the new HDD(wireless).

Yeah, but this isn't a permanent solution. Can you get the thing connected, even if it's dangling from nothing but that wire? As a quick fix to just get data off it, it would be worth Rube Goldberg-ing it together if the connection can be made.

If memory serves me its a pinned connector....cant remember. I would think theoretically it could be done. Probably easier to figure out a way to make it fit if it doesnt all ready though.

My slim model looks as if it simply slides right out. The 3rd gen slides straight out as well....

I see what you're saying now. Yeah, theoretically, it could work, but probably a huge PIA.

Well, I started out with a premium '97 Honda Civic Type R (189hp) ran a few A-spec races then bought a set of Sport Soft tires.

The I did the FF Seasonal races, won easily, earned enough money to buy a Nissan 370Z. Bought a set of Sport Soft tires and raced the 370Z in the FR Seasonal races and earned enough money to buy the Ferrari 458 Italia.

Then I raced the Ferrari in the Ferrari Seasonal races.

I had also bought a Viper ACR, heavily modified and tuned it, and ran it online at Daytona for 30 or so laps, won, and made some good money. It didn't take me very long to make 1M credits.

Slims are not interchangeable ive done 2 Hdd changes and as soon as you boot it up it will ask for a small program to format the hard drive which you get from the sony site. As far as im aware aware all slim PS3s have a unique code in them prohibitating this procedure amonst other things.

You can't do anything with it. Consider it dead. BUT Sony is once again fixing Fat PS3s for $125 if you didn't open it. If you did. your screwed. There are a few people around the net that fix PS3s for like $80-$100. I have a 60G here that died early this year and I've been shopping around myself.

Sucks man, I feel your pain.

Just dreaming here, wouldn't it be nice to have a save data recovery division in Sony. Send in the HDD, they send you a thumb drive with the saves?
Could even prove to be profitable...

Data recovery can be VERY expensive and probably not very economical for a video game.

👍 this. Just sending the HD is risky. From a data recovery standpoint, I'd rather get the unit intact. That said, just getting the HD out for recovery involves the same amount of steps as replacing it/fixing it. You'd be looking at the same cost for a fix + the data recovery charge. Could run over $200 just for the labor.

Businesses can literally pay thousands of dollar for data recovery and will pay it if the data that needs recovering is important data. Video game saves shouldn't be considered important.

Playstation does offer a means of backing up your data online through there Playstation Plus service but it is still a manual backup.

Just being in the habit of doing your own backups on a regular basis and even transferring the flash drive data to a PC so you have several backups of your game save should be more than good enough to ensure you have your data if the inevitable happens.

Thanks for the info:tup:. I read basically what you said last night while doing some research after this thread..very interesting. Idk why Sony would design it like that.
