Well I think beyond personal preference when rating stuff. I rate based on how good I genuinely think something is, rather than rating on how much I personally enjoyed it.
It's almost as if some people in this thread are oblivious to the concept of guilty pleasures.
I enjoyed Midori Days and Pet Shop of Horrors, but I knew that they were bad, so I rated them low and I don't recommend them.
Things I rate high are things that I enjoyed and also think are genuinely good, which means I think that other people would enjoy them, thus I'd absolutely recommend them.
