Okay, question: Looking for something Shonen-esque to waste some time with. And I don't like One Piece (I've tried several times to get into it. Just can't.)

Suggestions?

Bleach, Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, Gintama, Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Hunter x Hunter (2011), Rurouni Kenshin, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!. That's all that's coming to mind for now.

Definitely check out Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood if you haven't already. :) 👍

Other than that, I've been hearing good things about Gintama. So although I can't personally vouch for it as I haven't seen it, it might be worth a shot.

Especially since both series are in the top 10?:p

Gintama' is 1st, Gintama is 5th.

Look at how many 10's there are!
http://myanimelist.net/anime/9969/Gintama/stats

Even if it's awesome, I sincerely doubt it's a 10. Thus the high number of 10s comes across to me as the ratings given by a bunch of rabid fanboys, and subsequently it's position in the top 10 is rendered meaningless. Or rather, the top 10 stops meaning "10 best" and now means "10 most popular" instead.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Don't think about it, don't question it, just do it. :sly:

Uh...look at the top 10 most popular, and then their ranking.
1. Death Note-Ranked 17
2. Bleach-Ranked 621
3. Fullmetal Alchemist-Ranked 65
4. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion-Ranked 13
5. Naruto-Ranked 867
6. Elfen Lied-Ranked 257
7. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya-Ranked 134
8. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2-Ranked 8 (Oh the irony.)
9. Ouran High School Host Club-Ranked 41
10. Naruto Shippuden-Ranked 564

People will rate shows however they want. If that many people truly find Gintama' to be a 10/10 show, it's their business. It's not something I'll hold against them, even if like 90% of the shows they watched are 10/10's in their eyes.

"Good" and "Bad" are subjective when it comes to the quality of a show. X is a good show is an opinion. X is a bad show is an opinion. X is the best/worst anime of all-time is an opinion.

The MAL, Anime-Planet, and ANN rankings merely display what it's ranked based off of its mean score from everyone rating it.
So since I've already seen Brotherhood...

Gintama then?
Prepare to laugh a lot. I saw only the first 25 episodes of the first series, but it definitely was pretty good and hilarious.

I'm gonna go back in time and shoot Asuka the moment she exits out of the monitor. :dopey:

Suzuha style.
Two words:
"Anta baka?"
Thank you Asuka. You'd simply create another world-line. :sly:

Anyways, my brother has now started watching the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I think it's solely because of this:

I looked over Wikipedia. It sounds like a sillier version of Champloo (perhaps Champloo glued to Excel Saga?). Would that be a good generalization for it? Like, I'm not going to start it and suddenly it turns into tournament arcs or anything like that, right?

And.... Bebop is the best anime ever. Deny it, I dare you.

The only thing which might possibly be able to claim to be on the same level as Bebop is the original Ghost in the Shell movie. Sorry EVA geeks, until the final re-releases come out, I'll have to say NGE is in 3rd all time. Bebop had it all. Awesome story, great animation for its time, great soundtrack, characters, humor and action, style. So great he tried again with Champloo, which for me is in the top 10 but not as good as the original.

It's hard to compare Cowboy Bebop to Ghost in the Shell... other than the fact that they're sci-fi, they're very different. It's almost like comparing 2001: A Space Odyssey to Cowboys and Aliens.

I'll agree that they're overall better than Neon Genesis Evangelion though. Throughout NGE, there are numerous blemishes. It sometimes even feels like they were unsure about the direction they were going to ultimately go with it... Most likely due to budget cuts and having to compromise several things, most notably the ending. Taken overall, and with EoE, NGE is great. And me being particularly fond of EoE, NGE is my personal favorite series. But NGE by itself feels very rough around the edges and ultimately falls shy of greatness.

For the sake of talking about something: I concur with Bebop bein' better than EVA in a lot of ways; however, I don't think GitS is better than Bebop, assuming a level playing field. It's a very dispair comparisson.

Of course, this above is purely personal opinion. Yet, what is a fact is that, even if those two might or might not be better or worse than Bebop, they changed the anime far more than Bebop, both EVA and GitS have been incredibly more influential than Cowboy Bebop.

GitS took the genre practically created by Akira and gave it a new push, keeping it strong enough for it to keep on going and giving birth to shows that range from Lain to, say, Rahxephon, and of course the two GitS TV shows; it has been an influence to practically every sci-fi thing created since it was launched, including indeed Bebop and even The Matrix.

EVA is the mother of all mindf**cks. I've talked about it before, how it single-handedly changed the game when it came out, suddenly anime was deep, touched sensible fibers and was for grown-ups instead for numble teens in school uniforms. It wasn't the first one to do it (what about the Matsumoto works of the 70s and 80s) but it was the first anime to gain worldwide notoriety for it, and deffinitely changed the entire face of anime forever and ever.

Bebop didn't do any of the above. In fact, I'd be hardpressed to find any influence Bebop has had, almost 15 years since it we met. We could say Champloo, like Goddin said, but that's by the same team, so it doesn't counts. You can clearly see where Bebop got it's influence (hello, Lupin), but untill this day, I cannot see a single Bebopo influence in anime. Maybe the only big thing that Bebop left for the anime world, aside from it's mere quality, was the attention put to music. Before Bebop, you wouldn't see super-production soundtracks done for an anime, and many could also point to Evangelion for that, which came earlier and also had a tremendously good and expensive soundtrack, so that could also be put into debate.

With this, however, I'm not implying that Bebop isn't any less important nor less good. Being influential does not make you the best, ask the Beatles. Game changers, yes, but my how they sucked (at least in the pre-Rubber soul days, read, the pre-drugs days). I still think Bebop is the best series I've ever seen, but I understand how it all comes down to tastes, and can also see why it wouldn't appeal to some people.

The one with the short hair is a friend. She loves dressing up. :trouble:

Make that face when she loves undressing, bud.

Seriously, go ONE week without mentioning something Eva related.

You seem to forget where you are apparently.

To my knowledge, Bebop never really took off in Japan. It's more well-received here than over there, just like The Big O was*. Though it's probably due to how Bebop is more western than eastern. It doesn't have all that much stuff that appeals to the Japanese directly.

*Due to fan reaction overseas, and more, Cartoon Network ended up co-producing The Big O season 2. It's thanks to its popularity over here that second season became possible. Now if only a season 3 could happen. I hope good sales of this thing lead to a season 3.

I'm okay with it being mentioned here and there, but not in the majority of a member's posts. C'mon, diversity is a good thing. That Asuka thing is terrible as well.

Rinne no Lagrange 6:

The Rinne bloomed! What does that mean?! lol

I don't think I know you well enough.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like The Beatles.

You're forgetting what NGE is to the anime community however.

I mean each of the two Rebuild movies sold 100,000+ copies each over here IIRC, and that's astounding. Most anime rarely sell anywhere near that many copies these days. LE's are no longer limited to 15,000 units, it's much lower than that.

Just do what I do with the NGE talk everywhere, deal with it. The people in here absolutely adore NGE, so it's obvious they'll keep talking about it.

Again, just deal with it. It's not even THAT annoying, or annoying at all really.

MAL lied about our compatibility.

Well we're not getting a MALvorce since someone didn't want to sign a prenup.

I account for at least 90,000 copies. :)
