Lets be honest, the engine sounds in the previous games have been pretty poor. It seems though, that they've sorted it out-when cars have standard exhausts.However as soon as you put on a titanium race one it can all go very wrong. For example rs6 v10 goes from a muted v10 bellow to a howling straight six skyline- wrong. The m5 v10 goes from a near gallardo scream to a nascar sounding v8 and the worst of them is the c63 which turns to a ****e sounding four pot. This isnt good, especially as the power gains from straight pipes are so high. It has to be said that some cars do improve, e.g the fd2 civic type r turns into a screaming j-rays esc beast. Any ways enough of my ranting, lets here what blunders or improvements you've found-Baz
 
Some cars, like my Lambo full exhaust, sounds a bit raspy. But my Viper which isn't fully built, sounds amazing as well as my fully built Civic, the Cam and Exhaust note sound pretty good. I can agree that some cars sound bad but others sound good.

But in real life, my straight pipe ( No cat ) Twin Turbo 350z sounds amazing with external wastegates and open dumps. But a stock 350z with Exhaust and straight Pipe ( No Cats ) does not sound as good. Too raspy.
 
i thnk the sounds are good! I got a "79 civic which i have tuned, for example, and when I put the semi-racing exhaust the 4 cylinder sounded awesome! I could hear the cylinders combusting in the revs! To me when Yamouchi said "we've worked to improve engine sounds," he ment it. I think the game is the best i played of all my Ps3 games. 👍
 
i thought the sounds were terrible, although after racing in the vw bus for gold to open up the top gear test track I thought , hey, now here is one car i have found in the game that passes my criticism. all others fail that ive heard so far. i have my fingers crossed that it would be possible to have dlc down the road like the chevy engine and exhaust pack that updates all the computer like sound files for the cars. just a whole pack for each make or just premiums, i hope they do something.

i canceled my order on a g27 wheel due to the computer engine and exhaust notes. so will be going with a cheaper wheel.

im at a loss on how they missed a key element.

if nothing is ever done then in time i will favorite all the cars i can tolerate listening too while driving and stick with those. really was hoping for realistic examples of each car
 
ITS LIKE ALL THE CARS SOUND THE SAME, JUS BOUT 5 DIFF ENGINE SOUNDS SPREAD THROUGHOUT 1031 CARS :grumpy: U CANT EVEN HEAR THE VTEC IN THE HONDAS OR VVTLI IN THE CELICAS & RUN-X
 
Some cars' sounds have really improved since GT4 where every rally car had the same exhaust note. However, there are some cars which either haven't been worked on, for example the Mercedes CL600 which is a V12, not a V8 which the sound suggests, or haven't been improved accurately. I think it's fair to say that for the racing exhausts in particular Kaz and his team may have had to implement what they would have thought the cars are supposed to sound like. I don't think, for example, that the sound recordists would have been able to record the Audi RS6 V10 with a racing exhaust because there may not have been one fitted with a racing muffler in real life at the time.
 
Some cars are good, but most are week. I can't say I've notice MR or RR cars with the engine sound coming from behind me as much as the front. I do need to get a rear sub, too, though, but who expects GT5 to support 2 separate sub channels, though?

A larger issue is that my Prius sounds deeper than my Enzo, which sounds much higher pitched that the youtube vids I see. I do need to experiment with raising the bass, etc on a special GT5 profile/preset on my AVR, though.

Transmission whine is much too loud especially on adjustible transmissions, too

The way I see it, we've not seen the improvement he promised, yet. Equally, the (French, I think) press commented on hearing vastly improved engine sounds in the same pre-release demonstration they saw changing time and weather (and weren't allowed to talk about at the time).

I agree that there are too few "modified" sounds in PD's repertoire, and they have interesting ideas about what it is that actually makes all the noise.
 
The sounds in this game are horrible!!!! There are very few cars that sound decent and thats it, just decent. Forza is waaayyyyy better in this category. Still not perfect but definitely better.

It does so well up to about 3000 rpm, then a mixture of that Skyline loop and the Gallardo kicks in.

It makes me wonder why so many of the new cars have seemingly placeholder sounds (surely they'd have been recorded recently?). Also, many of the "Standards" sound different to how they did in GT4. Why do so many cars use the same samples? Why don't the air filter mods change the sounds, but turbo conversions do? (Well, you'd need an intake sound first before you can actually modify it! :sly:)
Is there an invisible agenda at PD regarding sound? I hope so...
 
Let me tell you something. I still love listening to my Race-Modified '69 Camaro SS. Great engine roar and really a proper-sounding American car. Most of the sounds are much improved from past GTs anyhow. The NASCAR machines sound fairly decent, but I really think the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP and the Audi R10 TDI sound too loud in GT5 compared to their real versions. I swear... you could almost hear the tires squeal better than their engines. Of course, that's not to say I've seen them in a race up close or heard them at speed.

Also, I think the rally cars in GT5 sound more like... rally cars. It is a fairly good improvement sound-wise for almost every rally car I've used so far in GT5.
 
Is this the kind of thing that could be possibly patched?, or would it a, be too much work, and b, be too big of a patch to put out?.

Its a shame as the rest of the game seems to be getting better with each update, yet the sound is the same old same old

They could realistically re-do the sound samples for every car in the game and keep the update under a gigabyte, as impractical as that seems. The other option is to use a "procedural" method to generate the sounds on the console as samples, or maybe even in real-time. That would be a much smaller update, but a far greater challenge. It would also be superb for the range of customisation it could offer.

They've already tweaked a few cars since release, but only minor things really. I do hope that at least by GT6 PD will have pulled-off a sonic revolution, akin to what they did with GT2 after GT's non-descript sounds. In fact, most of the cars in GT5 still use samples from recordings made for GT2...

Well im keeping fingers crossed they can do something about it soon, as it really does take away something from the game.

As with some on here, when i drive cars now i always make sure the exhaust is stock, and (sometimes) the transmission is stock as well. I just cannot stand that whine for long periods, tho i do miss the ability to customise the gears in doing so.

The more I see this type of thing the more I start to form the opinion that GT5 is such a hack-job of a game. Some things in this game are great and other things that I would believe are more in the core of what the game is about was totally left aside. That sentence above exudes pure laziness. I mean seriously what was Kaz thinking, re-record? but why? We already have them from when we did this game 10 years ago. We can just use the ones we already got. The ones we recorded yesterday (premium cars)arent going to sound any better anyway since our ears are not are strength. That's good enough. I want this game to have 1000 cars and I don't care if 80% of them are garbage looking and sound like crud. 1000 just sounds so much cooler.
Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but this game seems like certain things were just thrown together.

If that statement is true about the sounds being used from GT2, then yes it does exude pure laziness on PD's part.

It was released a year "too early". I don't see it as laziness; like I said in my post prior to that one, I think there's a reason for it...
Besides, it's not like those cars' sounds will have changed in the last 10 years, and sound recording is pretty mature (startup sounds, anyone?), unlike video games tech' in general.

EDIT: a lot of the samples I recognise distinctly from GT2, that Skyline loop being the most notorious (it was used on almost every LMP car in GT4). What's different is the way samples are mixed together, and the faux-detail that seems to have been lavished over many of the cars - e.g. the graunchiness of the Ford GT40 seems to have been cloned to many other cars, most notably the NASCAR cars. Basically, there are more layers, and a different mix, but the samples are more-or-less the same for many cars - even some premium cars use them, especially when modified.

I know the sounds themselves havent changed in 10 years but the equipment used to record them has. Also I think the game was much more than a year too early. I dont see how they would have been able to finish the graphics on all the standard cars to bring them up to premium status and get the exhaust and engine notes correct on all 1000 cars in just 1 more year. If they could get closer than what we got in 6 years, then I dont think 1 more year is going to make much of a difference.

No, recording equipment has only become (potentially) more affordable, and generally more compact. "Professional quality" audio, and the basic principles, are more-or-less the same. Now, the available space is different on a Blu-Ray in a Ps3 vs. the ol' CDs in the Playstation, but the original recordings are not affected by this limitation, so the samples used in GT5 can be higher fidelity than the same ones used in GT2, from the same recording.

The startup sounds for the standards were taken at the same time the cars were recorded for the in-game loops; they sound great. There was a video showing this on the run-up to GT4's release, when they were capturing the new cars there. Not all the samples are 10 years old, of course, but when it comes to modified sounds, they mostly are.

I never said PD intended to have all 1000 cars as premiums inside one year - you were saying GT5 seems like a hack job, hence why I said it was a year early.
Engine sounds are a different matter, but there are only two sound designers on the credits.

WTH have those 2 guys been doing the last 6 years if there only job is sound. Yeah your mostly right about the start up sound when getting in a car being somewhat realistic but the rest is pure rubbish.
 
I'm actually deterred from tuning large V8-engine cars, eg. Corvette, simply because bolting on any exhaust modification ruins the engine note. Nowhere in the exhaust menu does it say that "...oh, and we'll chisel off two cylinders as well."

Another thing I would like is for the actual volume of the car, the engine loudness, to resemble that in real life. The louder the car, the louder it should be in the game (albeit perhaps not to quite the same extent as in reality, but enough that you need not adjust the game volume too much...)

Yeah, modifying any car more or less screws up the sound. The S2000 gets a straight six, the Cappuccino's triple becomes a four and a lot of cross-plane V8s get the 180°-headers treatment... Among many others.

The volume does change, especially if you change the exhausts. Some Ferraris are louder than a lot of other stock vehicles in the game. Be aware that the "audio compressor" (dynamic range option) will nullify these differences to some extent. Play with one of the theatre settings. 👍
