GT5 Engine Sounds

Sound is a huge part of the driving sensation for me. I just can't bring myself to drive something like a Corvette C5R in the game simply because it sounds nothing like the real thing, it sounds like a flat plane crank V8. They could have just used one of the generic american V8-sounds, like the one used for the Ford GT LM Spec II Test car. It wouldn't be perfect, but certainly way closer than the sound it has now.

Again, it wasn't grumpiness. I just think the GT series has always had a very generic and poor exhaust sound quality. GT2 imo could have improved the sound of the cars even using generic sounds without much effort. They still could have been much better.

I'm just pulling your leg on the grumpiness thing; like I said, it amuses me!

But, again, I disagree with your actual point - the GT series was an innovator in sound, but has become generic and has had to remain "poor" as a direct consequence of its vast scope. It seems that not many people are actually able to appreciate this.
To say that GT2's sounds could have been much better is stating the obvious somewhat; every game ever made could have been better. Then again, I don't know of any other Playstation game that comes close to the level of quality and quantity that GT2 showed - making the sounds better would have been a massive technical challenge, well beyond the limit of diminishing returns. I suspect that you're really referring to the perennial lack of accuracy as regards certain cars, i.e. cross-plane V8s, which is not "sound quality" per se. This is a disappointment I share.

Clearly PD has had a massive challenge on their hands with the sound in GT5, and the contrast between the innovation in some areas of the game's sound (the engine overall, spatial effects, atmospheric effects, quantity of sound sources) and the apparent stagnation of other points (reverb, sample quality, sample accuracy, lack of intake sound, missing incidental effects etc.) perhaps points to technical limitations in the same way that weather effects in previous games were at once impressive and frustratingly limited. The hope, then, is that PD have something up their sleeves for the future.
On the negative side, perhaps PD's sound guys don't really know enough about how cars produce sound, and it may never get much better.

Sounds from my tv are ok, I would like more but I am limited by my equipment. At my mates he has a very nice surround sound system with a hefty sub and when it is loud the room shakes and I hear sounds I never hear from my TV, so now I do not criticise the sounds any more.

I still think to this day NFSU2 had some of the best engine sounds i've ever heard on a game. And probably the most Accurate Subaru Sti sound out of any game i've heard.

they could give us maybe somthing like an option. You fit the raceing exhaust system, but can choose what engine note you would like...
A. Original
B. Racing Exhaust sound
(Or other exhaust fittings)

Just a thought.

The few engine sounds that GT5 is doing an average job at (Average as in, resembles authentic engine and exhaust note) has for the most part (99%) already been excelled tenfold by other games and sims imo.
Which really is a shame, GT5 has a real good aroma to it but it lacks quality on many of the really important aspects of driving and/or tuning a car.

I agree with this post and I'd also add the Corvette C6R and the Camaro Race Car. I've been to a few American Lemans races and after seeing the Corvette in person I can't listen to it on GT5. Its like seeing a giant speaking with a little girls voice:sly:
