Here is a video I made this morning of a CLEAN lap on Cape Ring. Using two cameras, I was able to capture my pedal work and also show my steering wheel. Hopefully, some people can find this helpful by seeing the actual wheel and pedals in action.

I am not the fastest, but my technique is pretty simple to mimic, as opposed to some alien guys like FixByWire. I don't use a lot of brake modulation or steer with the gas like you see the top guys do. However, this lap of 2:47.156 will get you into the top 30 overall so its still pretty quick.

At some point, I would like to add annotations to the video to go into more detail about stuff like brake markers, shifting, or just what I'm thinking about when going around the track.

Hunk, thanks for taking the time to make it. Nice clean lap and informative. Can't believe how little speed you scrub on the banking.

+1 - excellent driving.

This is great, and I'm sure people would appreciate some annotations of shift points, turn-in/apex/track-out markers, etc.

This reminds me of an iRacing guide that someone put together of all the beginner car/track combos. It wasn't the fastest lap, but it was quick enough and very smooth like this. All the new comers were very grateful, and it even helped veterans take time off their lap. I suspect that this will do the same.

Did you mean "graceful"?

But yeah, that was a great run. I'm not a proponent of left-foot braking (in games or IRL), so I personally don't bother driving like that myself.

Hmm, maybe I'll try the bungee cord mod too.

@RaDeuX, Bungie cord is a massive improvement to the brake pedal. If you have a cord lying around, I suggest at least giving it a try.

@KAT, I drive manual but use the lever shifters on the back of the wheel. Thats why you never see me touching the shifter knob.

What's this bungee cord do exactly? Stiffer brake pedal?

The brake pedal for the Logitech Driving Force Pro and Driving force GT has absolutely 0 resistance in probably the first 15% of pedal travel. It is very difficult to gauge how much pressure you are giving because its like pushing down on thin air. Also, its easy to accidentally apply the brakes if you happen to rest your foot against the pedal ever so slightly.

Adding the bungie cord creates tension all the way through the travel of the pedal. You get a much better feel for how much brake pressure you are applying, and you can also rest your foot on the pedal without worrying about depressing the brake.

No, I didn't. The newcomers were thankful for the guide to help get them started. (I should have split that up - wasn't very clear in the original post.)

Re: left foot braking, I'm pretty sure most of the top times are posted using LFB. It can easily save a few tenths/lap depending on the track. I never LFT IRL on the road or at the track, but always used to LFB with GT3 and GT4. I had to switch back to RFB once I got my g25 to use with iRacing, and lost my touch with the left foot. Luckily I just completed the FGT championship where LFB is pretty much mandatory (almost all F1 drivers use their left foot to brake IRL), and I'm good enough at it again. IMO - left foot braking will become mainstream with all these paddle shifters out there (GT-R, Ferrari, etc.).

Hunk, you are legend ;)

You have become quite good at making videos, integrating the two cameras like that is pretty cool. You should have asked Santa for some racing shoes :D

Ok I just finished annotating the video. Go watch! Bear with me, I'm trying to be helpful but I mostly don't know what I'm talking about. Choate, I need your help with this one. Any tips I should add?

Haha, thanks factory. I'm just glad the socks I was wearing didn't have holes in them. =)

I LFB in iRacing in the MX5/Mustang since you don't have to clutch in to downshift, just apply a healthy blip of the throttle and it goes right into gear :).

Even after the new transmission model last fall? Shame on them - WIP I suppose.

I usually like to RFB and use heel-toe for every downshift as I only focus on tracks on the COMSCC (local time trial club) schedule and try to make things as "real" as possible, especially before going to a new track (like Mosport...YIKES) - once they add NJMP I'll be able to drive 5 of the 6 tracks on the 2011 schedule virtually...

Great post! Thanks for sharing. I can definitely see where I can adjust my technique to game some from my 2'47.6xx. I appreciate it!!! Good annotation too.

This video is definitely helping me out Hunk!

After not being able to go any faster than 2:49:100 yesterday, I watched this video and sure enough found .3 of a second moving my time down to 2:48:800..

Thanks for the video! I'll be analyzing it over and over for anything I'm missing or need work on.

Thanks Hunk!

Great start!

A lot of the tips are good. One suggestion, and I'll use turn 1 as an example, I wouldn't even mention speed. Instead just focus on marks, something like "try to keep about a full car width from the inside curbing on entry and apex 3/5ths of the way around the corner..."). A new driver shouldn't even be thinking about speed, instead they should learn the line and the speed will come (e.g. "why do I always fly off the track when I try to take this at 47mph?!"). Just my $0.02...Either way SOLID work.

Personally I NEVER pay attention to my speed in corners, I just focus on brake markers and running the line.

Interesting. I have been manic trying to figure out the right speed at every corner. This approach seems to be much more organic. I will see if it helps me.

Every one has their own approach, I just find that focusing on my driving is best for me. The more I look at splits, speeds, ect the more mistakes I make. I just like to get in the zone and start pumping out laps. Very nice stuff btw AJ. I'll definitely be checking this out to help me learn Cape.

God I wish I could Kaz I wish I could turn off the split timing! I'll be racing my own ghost and as soon as I see that -.300 at a check I start shaking and throw it all away.

Just got a 2.48.7 before I go to bed. Although it's my quickest posted time I know I can find more time because I had faster times, but would screw it up on 1 turn (usually turn 14-16 or the last 3 turns).

My goal is at least a 2.47.xxx

Nice work Peluski. The more practice you get, the more consistent you will become through each sector, the better the chance you will nail that magic lap!

Thanks a lot for the vid! I was stuck at a 2:48.2 and just by looking at it, I pulled off a 2:47.9 tonight. :)

I'll need to study it very carefully to see where I need to improve. I already can tell I need a lot of work at T21 (corner at the 2:40 mark). I cannot for the life of me go over 100 mph at that corner and I'm probably losing a ton of time there.

I ran a 2:47.7 tonight. My arms are killing me (I think I am now the 3rd highest controller user on the boards). I am 67th overall. outlaw4rc is right above me at 66th :p
