It's a bit over a month since Polyphony released GT5, and so far I have but only a few complaints. However, yesterday, I thought I'd look back all the way to 2007-2010 and review what GT5 had to offer at the time.
First, I'm sure most of you remember this trailer-
Notice how just about every location, excluding Monaco, was simply a backdrop, and not an actual track as GT5 has no such locations. Also, PD uses London as a Photomode Location for the GTR Proto. This to is also not possible in GT5. (Mind you it was a concept trailer, but nonetheless I'm sure it took a lot of work to make)
One year later at the same event (E3), we got a glimpse of the first gameplay footage in GT5 (Prologue)
As the title states, 900 degree steering is precent in the video, but for the final version of GT5, scrapped.
Now on to E3 09' were we saw this-
Here, PD showcases two pre-race ceremonies (NASCAR and WRC). With the NASCAR pre-race ceremony, we see all the cars lining the pits as the fireworks go off and the jets soar overhead. It was all magnificent, yet once again PD scrapped it all along with the WRC pre-race ceremony which depicted the RB Citroen C4 pulling off the podium and heading out to the rally stage. (And if you haven't noticed yet, every single NASCAR car in that trailer was scrapped as well for the 2010 models. What a waste of time that must have been)(Also, that specific song is not in GT5)
It then shows multiple Super GT cars in one photomode location, something we are still not aloud to do in GT5.
Then, most surprisingly, we see the Top Gear Test Track at dawn (or maybe dusk). I find it surprising because not only is the TGTT not playable at any other time of day besides mid afternoon, but also because the amount of time it takes to model an entire area for a different time of day (with added fog effects and all) takes quite some time.
Jumping back to 2008 for a second, here is the GT by Citroen Trailer-
At 1:19, (were the car comes over the hill) we see what looks like Seattle Circuit. However, no such course in GT5 can be matched to the one shown in this trailer. (Scrapped again?) Also, at 1:06, it looks as if the GT by Citroen is racing in London at night. This too is also not possible in GT5.
Here is the Toyota FT-86 Trailer-
Almost all content in this trailer never made it to GT5. The Tokyo dock yard, scrapped. The unknown mountain course, scrapped. The driver (who isn't wearing a racing suit), scrapped.
Jumping back once again to 2008 where we saw the Ferrari California Trailer-
And just like the Toyota FT-86 trailer, most of what we see is not prescent in GT5. The mountainy road, scrapped. The ability to drive with the top up, not possible. The HSR's pathway road as a photomode location, again, not possible. Also, like the FT-86 trailer, the driver is not wearing racing gear.
At the end of 2009, we got the Time Trail Demo. Within the demo a yellow flag was displayed when you either went the wrong way, or had a massive incident, and did not move. (Video below)
For the final version of GT5, scrapped.
On to 2010. Here's the most recent trailer by Red Bull. And although this trailer was to never be released, it was full on GT5 footage.
The first of two thing you'll probably notice now is that the song, "Horsepower", was not included in GT5. The second is that EI Captain, shown with an Enzo, was scrapped.
Lastly, and most disappointingly, the damage shown in the GT5 Best Buy demo was scrapped.
I don't know if we'll ever know for sure why PD scrapped this, but for whatever reason, be it the overwhelming criticism, or lack of disk space, I was sad to find out such damage never occurs in the full game.
My hope is, then, that in fact none of this was actually scrapped, but saved. Saved for GT6 or for a DLC. When you compile all of what could have been, you can't help but think that they couldn't have been just wasting time, could they?
