It's a bit over a month since Polyphony released GT5, and so far I have but only a few complaints. However, yesterday, I thought I'd look back all the way to 2007-2010 and review what GT5 had to offer at the time.

First, I'm sure most of you remember this trailer-

Notice how just about every location, excluding Monaco, was simply a backdrop, and not an actual track as GT5 has no such locations. Also, PD uses London as a Photomode Location for the GTR Proto. This to is also not possible in GT5. (Mind you it was a concept trailer, but nonetheless I'm sure it took a lot of work to make)

One year later at the same event (E3), we got a glimpse of the first gameplay footage in GT5 (Prologue)

As the title states, 900 degree steering is precent in the video, but for the final version of GT5, scrapped.

Now on to E3 09' were we saw this-

Here, PD showcases two pre-race ceremonies (NASCAR and WRC). With the NASCAR pre-race ceremony, we see all the cars lining the pits as the fireworks go off and the jets soar overhead. It was all magnificent, yet once again PD scrapped it all along with the WRC pre-race ceremony which depicted the RB Citroen C4 pulling off the podium and heading out to the rally stage. (And if you haven't noticed yet, every single NASCAR car in that trailer was scrapped as well for the 2010 models. What a waste of time that must have been)(Also, that specific song is not in GT5)

It then shows multiple Super GT cars in one photomode location, something we are still not aloud to do in GT5.

Then, most surprisingly, we see the Top Gear Test Track at dawn (or maybe dusk). I find it surprising because not only is the TGTT not playable at any other time of day besides mid afternoon, but also because the amount of time it takes to model an entire area for a different time of day (with added fog effects and all) takes quite some time.

Jumping back to 2008 for a second, here is the GT by Citroen Trailer-

At 1:19, (were the car comes over the hill) we see what looks like Seattle Circuit. However, no such course in GT5 can be matched to the one shown in this trailer. (Scrapped again?) Also, at 1:06, it looks as if the GT by Citroen is racing in London at night. This too is also not possible in GT5.

Here is the Toyota FT-86 Trailer-

Almost all content in this trailer never made it to GT5. The Tokyo dock yard, scrapped. The unknown mountain course, scrapped. The driver (who isn't wearing a racing suit), scrapped.

Jumping back once again to 2008 where we saw the Ferrari California Trailer-

And just like the Toyota FT-86 trailer, most of what we see is not prescent in GT5. The mountainy road, scrapped. The ability to drive with the top up, not possible. The HSR's pathway road as a photomode location, again, not possible. Also, like the FT-86 trailer, the driver is not wearing racing gear.

At the end of 2009, we got the Time Trail Demo. Within the demo a yellow flag was displayed when you either went the wrong way, or had a massive incident, and did not move. (Video below)

For the final version of GT5, scrapped.

On to 2010. Here's the most recent trailer by Red Bull. And although this trailer was to never be released, it was full on GT5 footage.

The first of two thing you'll probably notice now is that the song, "Horsepower", was not included in GT5. The second is that EI Captain, shown with an Enzo, was scrapped.

Lastly, and most disappointingly, the damage shown in the GT5 Best Buy demo was scrapped.

I don't know if we'll ever know for sure why PD scrapped this, but for whatever reason, be it the overwhelming criticism, or lack of disk space, I was sad to find out such damage never occurs in the full game.

My hope is, then, that in fact none of this was actually scrapped, but saved. Saved for GT6 or for a DLC. When you compile all of what could have been, you can't help but think that they couldn't have been just wasting time, could they?

Trailers are not an exact representation of what you will find in game. They are hints, and ALWAYS look far better and more attractive than the final output. You can never take away everything from a trailer, and expect it in the game.

There is a company in California called Blur. They create alot of trailers, cinematics, and commercials for video games. If you watch some of their trailers, then look at the game content, you will understand my point. They make some of the most amazing CG work for video games, yet some of the games they create these trailers for completely suck. It's a selling point. Looks like it roped in a few buyers.

Trailers and teasers are just hype-train to Neverland, just don't hop on them or you will be sorely disappointing.

I agree, this is something that has really bugged me about GT5, the fact tha they made all this content, and then just scrapped it. Lets just hope they release all of it in either patches, or in GT6.

Because pd are unprofessional and run around like headless chicken: 'yes Kaz we all love the firework quick lets go and knock that up and use as trailer'.

And spend as little time as possible creating a spec and definitely don't playtest before shipping.

Its such a pity. I wish they had just implemented a few things really well than many things so badly.

if thats not HYPE i dont know what is. They did in fact make it, but for god knows what reason it didnt make the cut. Although there is a double standard all over the place. Considering the atrocity that some of the standard cars look like with all the pixels hanging off the wheel arches etc and how bad the shadows/smoke/water spray look... why on earth would you not include tracks from GT4 especially when GT4 had a 1080i mode and they looked quite decent there.

We can only hope they will keep working on this once they iron out the bugs that are currently present.

Very good and valid point, but I think you missed the main point the OP was trying to get across. It's mainly all of the content which was actually created by PD with the clear intention of being used in the game, such as the tracks that we've actually seen in trailers (They would never create a completely new track just for a trailer), which were then just 'scrapped' for no clear reason.

Well most of the things in this thread (especially El Capitan) are stupid things to make. Why would the show us footage of that track? It means they made something of that track. Also, to be honest, there really isn't THAT much content in GT5. What do we have? Events (which I think are super easy to make, and even that they screw up on some things), ******** of cars, 70 tracks. And the graphics aren't really THAT stunnning. There is a lot of detail, but overall, it isn't very impressive. That isn't really that much if you compare it to what some developers make in just 2 years. I don't know what they have been doing in those last 6 years , but definitely more than they show us with GT5. I think they started work on GT6 while doing GT5 so it will be released short after GT5.I think GT6 comes within 2 years from now.

Although GT5 is one of the best games of 2010, No doubt there could be more in it.

That 'mountain road' looks very similar in it's layout to Grindelwald, look at 1.05 on the FT-86 trailer. Remember the corner after you first pass the train?

The Enzo round El Capitan is supposedly taken from GT-PSP.

Add to this thread the damage model from the demos and the Siena kart track, both of which have gone AWOL

I understand that, but PD is not known for using anything but gameplay footage in their trailers (Aside from the E3 07 trailer and GT PSP).

Yes, I completely forgot about those. However, I believe Siena was discontinued for legal purposes, so I don't think that counts, but I do remember the extreme damage model showcased at Best Buy. (Added)

Good thing the same doesn't apply to movies. ;)
No, I think it's a fair call to accept things you see in "trailers" as fact. Just my opinion though. :)
They have obviously made/rendered ALL of the images that are in the trailers, or so it would appear, so why not leave them in...

Yep, absolutely 100% correct 👍

It's called marketing, I know, that's what I do for a living.

Basically, marketeers (as we're known) will take anything, no matter how bad, rubbish, useless, broken, wrong or defunct, and turn it into the most amazingly brilliant item you simply must have.

There is no honour, truth, decency or morals in marketing.

All the good points of a product are highlighted, exagerrated and promoted, whilst all the bad points are swept under the carpet and conveniently forgotten about.

That's the way it always has been, is and always will be.

One simple rule you must always remember is - don't believe the hype.

I can assure you, 99.9% of the time it isn't true.

Sam48 you forgot the 900 degrees steering animation. We could see it with chase cam in GT HD concept and in cockpit view in one or two old videos of GT5 Prologue's demo.
Another thing that is missing in GT5 are flag penalties. We saw something in GT Academy doing a glitch in the pits.

What the hell PD!

Having "something" shown in a non playable 60seconds video clip is a whole different league than having it in the finished game (think user interaction and every other feature which builds upon other features). This does not mean that these tracks/cars/features were "scrapped" at all, and were more likely merely "mocked up" for show and tell reasons.

Its also logical to assume that these features/etc were infact intended to make it into the game but as of yet have not, again due to a zillion reasons.

If your not happy stop playing

Its just like Walkers showing you a full packet a crisps on the telly and scrapping half of the contents its not really nice because it causes the hype by not showing the true contents

it's just the way it is.

Not everything was finished in time to include in the game.... it's a huge game.
get over it.

This whole culture that you are all 'owed' so much for your £40.... makes me sick.

I'm pretty sure this has already been covered somewhere.

Link?

Are you saying the OP isn't making valid points? PD fanboys and Kaz-sniffers are what make me sick. This is a good game, but it should have been better, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to pay for a quality product.

I feel i got my money's worth.

I'm sorry you're never satisfied.

This, and compared to tons of other games, much more than my money's worth.
Some people always want more. Goes to show the false sense of entitlement kids nowadays are thaught by bad parents.

I feel I almost got my money's worth, but not quite. Not when I compare the game to the previous iteration. Not when I consider how long they had to have more content in the game. To say that they ran out of time is not really fair when they had so many years to finish.
I think I should apologize for my strong words before, though. We have a slight difference of opinion, and I had no reason to name-call. I'm sorry.

I think that the NASCAR Fireworks/Jet think was scrapped for two reasons:
-1)the cars are facing the wrong way...they are going for the road course configuration.
-2)the races in the carrier mode, turned out too short.

Maybe it will return as a special seasonal event when the real nascar go to indy this year in their racing season.

That pretty well sums up the collective attitude here. 👎
I don't take kindly to being told "get over it". Why should I ??
IF these things (which are there for everyone to see, thanks youtube.) can't be squeezed into the game as intended, why advertise them ? False advertising, is it not..? :nervous:
