PlaySeat Alcantara total conversion - leave no screw unturned!

Rated "E" for EPIC.

(Click the images above for high-res pictures)

So, I finally made up my mind and purchased all the stuff needed to make my PlaySeat Alcantara awesome. Don't get me wrong, I like it but the seat isn't really great since it doesn't support my back at all and that's something most people criticize.

Yet, the metal base is pretty nifty, so no need to throw it away but rather use it to put a great bucket seat on it. The wheel should be available for pickup on Tuesday and the rim is expected to arrive around Thursday / Friday - so I'll update the post once it's going forward. All thumbnails are linked to bigger pictures, so feel free to click on them.

Current setup

- PlaySeat Alcantara
- Logitech Driving Force GT (DFGT)

Size comparison of PlaySeat Alcantara on it's base and the new bucket seat, standing on the ground

Upgrades

Budget: 900€ for the upgrades + ~80€ for screws, wood, protection pads (the ones that make stuff glide on the ground...without scratching it...what are they called, actually?) etc.
Working time: 6-8 hours

- Sparco R100 bucket seat (black/red)
- Sparco 3 point harness (red)
- Sparco K-F1 gloves (apparently they're sold out everywhere...even at Sparcos own shop - item pending)
- Thrustmaster T500 RS v5
- Thrustmaster Ferrari F1 150th Italia rim
- OMP HC-665 sliding bracket
- Senna sticker for the metal frame
- Screws, female screws, shims, a wooden plate & coating for the baseplate, if you want to make it look cool.

Put the sliding bracket together and mount it to the bucket seat

Disassemble the PlaySeat, check if the screws aren't colliding with the screws in the slider and put holes in a wooden plate (which will be the new baseplate) (42,5cm x 36,5cm). Extra points for making your mate hold the new baseplate.

Check if everything fits, so mount the bucket seat to the baseplate and screw it together. Not too much, tho - it has to be put apart again, it's a mere check if it's working smoothly.

Apply the coating to the baseplate. Keep in mind that you shouldn't do that inside but rather on your balcony or in your garden.

Drill 2 holes for the harness into the metal sideplates and one hole into the baseplate, dead center.

Put the whole thing together.

Install the new wheel

(I'll paint the piece of wood some day...maybe)

How it turned out

Yeah but only the bucket seat, not the metal base, obviously. Cheers guys, I'll update this thread tomorrow - just went back to my room, we went a bit over the top with our drinking games tonight.

Seat upgrade: done.

Waiting for the wheel, should be available for pickup on Tuesday. Fingers crossed for the F1 rim, hope it's arriving on Thursday / Friday. :)

Also looking for a replacement of the PlaySeat sticker on the metal base.

That'll look great, hope the seller can sell me ones for outside application, the offer on eBay is only listing stickers that are meant to be applied from the inside (e.g. your car windows).

F1 rim has been shipped this morning. Yet, the T500 RS wasn't ready for pickup - unsurprisingly. It would've been too smooth if the announced date would've been right...welcome to France. :p

5:42pm: it arrived. Great...stuck at work anyway today. Yet, the delay (6 hours 42 minutes) is way shorter than I thought. :p

 at the harness.

I laugh because when I went and bought the seat to build my cockpit I was so tempted to buy me one as well, but I thought "Nah".

Kudos to you for getting it, makes it look more professional. 👍

I had some of them in my first car, the famous "Schroth" ones with automatic pullback or whatever it's called (so that you simply get in the car and the harness will adjust itself). Yet, I thought having automatic pullback instead of manual adjustement might be a bit over the top for a gaming rig.

:D

On a side-note: got a reply regarding the stickers. Guy is willing to make special ones for me without charging me extra. Great success. \o/

Thought about aftermarket pedal covers as well:

Those would fit into the whole thing...hm...40€...a lot of money. :(

Go for it. Latte bought a set of those for his Thrustmaster pedals and the thing looked incredibly awesome even if it was such a "minor" upgrade (despite the price).

Come on, you got the harness, you can get these. :D

Indeed but I might have to wait until next month...spent too much money on it already. :scared:

Also need to get matching Sparco racing gloves. Another 60€. :p

Updated - wheel and pedals should be ready for installation tomorrow, fingers crossed.

11:39pm: done.

It's alive! I couldn't be happier, even tho I didn't even test it yet. It turned it way better than I imagined.

I'll take a better picture tomorrow, the light in my room is pretty bad and I'm too lazy to set up my tripod and flash atm. :p

I updated the OP but I'm uploading better pictures (aka no victims of Mr. JPEG) right now. :)

how'd you fasten it?

You'll need to drill 3 holes (if it has 3 screws, obviously) into the metal frame underneath the seat, I guess.

Left side, right side, dead center into the bar. I'm not sure but you could maybe attach a small piece of wood to the center bar, those screws are usually quite long and thick, so that'd maybe turn out better. :)

I haven't mounted it against the frame or the seat yet. The harness I have from Schroth is made to mount it at 2 places using the standard seatbelt locks. The 2 others require to mount small extenders at the regular lock mounts as well. As it turns out I got 2 male and 2 female connectors and just plugged them into each other behind the seat. I try to post a picture later.
Goode enough for my needs ATM.

The Schroth one I had in my car could be connected to some sort of "automatic pullback" box, if you know what I mean. this way you haven't had to set it up but could simply get into the car and it set itself up right. Just an idea...:)

My stickers arrived today, I'll attach them to the base today. Hope they won't look too shabby. :scared:

I had 2 of these pull back ones in an Ford Escort I had in the early 90's.
They were controlled by a little yellow box with a ball bearing inside and connected to power. If the ball remained center the harness was free, if the g forces pushed it off center (or the power was off) it would lock the puller. Driving without music made me hear always a clack clack coming from the back :)
If I would use this kind on a sim rig I would probably connect it to a button box and switch the power off after I'm sitting tight.

Indeed, that's what I meant. :D

On a side-note: would it work to attach a Buttkicker to the baseplate or do I have to attach it to the metal frame / the seat? Also, how do I connect it to my PS3? The set doesn't have an online manual available. :(

I want this one but am unsure where to buy it in Europe. Should I get the Buttkicker 2 instead? Any ideas?

If it wasn't for the fact that deep down the thing is still a Playseat, I'd be extremely jealous.

I am, however, very jealous. First of all that seat is just absolutely gorgeous. It's gotta be one of the best looking seats I've ever seen on a sim rig. The harness and your lighting makes it look even better. Also you have a pretty good camera.

Finally your wheel. If you add those sparco pedal pads you'll be all set. 👍
