Hi!

Does anyone here play games from a harddrive attached to your PS2? My brother is really excited about this and wants to get the stuff. Would be nice to get some positive feedback before going out and buying the stuff.

What he wants to do is buy a harddrive (he found a right one which is 120 gigs for 80 euros) which can be connected to the network adaptor for the PS2. Then you would need the HDLoader Harddrive Software.

Seems like plenty of people have done it with good results. Sounds really cool though, no more swapping of discs and then you can also borrow stuff from friends (or rent) and rip it onto the HD.

Not yet, but give it another week and I should have all the info you need. The harddrive is already installed so I'm just waiting for the software...

If it works as advertised, I'm going to be a very happy gamer..

if you have a chip, there's a hacked version of hdloader floating around. Give me a few weeks to scrounge up the greens for a hard drive and I'll test it out.

Great utility but I don't think it'll take your ISO's off of your computer :(.

I'm quite tempted to buy a network adapter and bung a spare 40gb drive into it. Then ripping all the games i play frequently. :rubshasnds:

I like the idea because it doesn't involve any modifying of the console. It would just be something to add onto your network adaptor. Nice little money saver ;)

I'm seeing it usefull for saving drive wear and loading times mostly. Oh and that 1337 coolness factor.

And who knows, might have some other good advantages like a "virtual memory card". Would be nice to save loads of replays and never have to worry about the size of the thing.

Woo, I don't think this thing likes my mad/tyte 40gb Hitatchi drives. :grumpy:

It reccomends Maxtor drives, but the only 40gb maxtor I have is in a working pc and I can't really use it. :grumpy:

emad
so clone your 40 gig maxtor onto the 40 gig hitatchi. Problem solved

I can't be bothered, also I don't have norton ghost either. Also it would require me to take apart PC's, which I can't be arsed to do.

I'm too lazy at the moment, please call back later.

If you come round my house, you can do it though.

i have been to that site before and it only tells u how to d/l games and burn them for the ps2 , but first u need a hard drive for that

Oh, but don't say that here. Things that aren't good will happen.

That link is funny, it doesn't actually link to the actual page.

http://www.ps2nfo.com/ps2hdd.html

Try that one.

Also, Keeno has tried it with Resident Evil (Or Biohazard) Outbreak and it caches the gamedata on the drive.

Edit: Bah link doesn't work still.

Go to that site, click 'PS2 HDD' then click on the 'HDD Loader FAQ' and read that.

My brother got ours working a few days ago. Don't know all the details but it kicks ass.

The hard drive we got is a 120 gigs maxtor hard drive and it fits nicely into a space behind/below the network adaptor. You can't see it at all. One game takes up 1 - 4 gigs so plenty can fit and it takes around 15 minutes to place a 1 gig game on the disc and 25 - 35 minutes for a 4 gigs game.

This stuff comes in handy when you have a lot of games and now you never have to change discs. You simply leave the HDLoader disc inside. It will also give your PS2 lense a longer life, no more constant loading with the lense ! And the loading is fast, very very fast!

Total cost was around 120 euros.

G4 just had a demonstration on Pulse and let me tell you, I was pretty impressed! The load time with Vice City was over one minute with the CD, while the load time with the HD Loader was only 24 seconds...

👍

holy! thats crazy cause i hate waiting for the GTA to load.... i do have some extra green laying around.... where whould i go for one? online? i live in canada so..yeah

I just realised my old data drive that I replaced with a SATA is a 40gb maxtor, hopefully it will work.

How do you reckon this HD will fare?

90 for the HD, 35 for the HDLoader software, and 40 bucks for the nNetwork adapter. That doesn't sound so bad. I think I might do this.

I don't know if I can resist the temptation to, uh, use this, uh, incorrectly.

the maxtor should run great 👍. If you want, PM me on thursday, I've got a 160 gig maxtor with the same layout that I can try plugging into my ps2's network card.

Using it incorrectly will more than likely. I originally bought my chip to play imports and now I've got a huge library of burns :P.

Cool!

I just found a PS2 Hard Drive Compatability Chart and it shows a few 160 GB Maxtors that fit AND work properly. I assume you can trust it if 3 people say it works. Some whacko's even got a 300 GB Maxtor working. That's a bit overkill, but sounds awesome.

Am I better off getting a HDD with 8 MB of buffer, or does it not make much difference? I don't have much experience with buying, installing, or messing around with computer hardware.

On the PS2, it most likely won't make any major difference. But considering that the 8mb drives cost only $10 (canadian) more than the regular ones, go ahead and get the 8 meg cache. If you end up not using the hdloader as much as you expected, or changing your mind about it, you'll have an excellent drive to pop into your pc for extra storage

The site says that the cache makes no difference. I found that I could do it for about $100 US total. I am seriously thinking about it. That's for the software, network adapter, and a 80 gig HDD.

Wow, this could dramaticly decrase the amount of money i spend on ps2 games.
i mean 150$ or so on a new hdd, hdloader, and a newwork adapter, isnt bad.
and then my local video store is full of ps2 games (4.99$usd), this is ingeneouis (sp?)!

Boom. Done.

I just ordered all the goodies from three different sites. All together it came to $176 with the cheapest shipping options.

I got the Network Adapter from Amazon.com, the HDLoader software from ConsoleSource.com, and the 120 GB HDD from GoGoCity.com. I guess I could have saved a couple bucks on shipping if I could have bought all three from one place.

Right now GoGoCity is offering a 120 GB Maxtor for 78 bucks. That sounds like an outstanding deal. I opted to pay 8 extra bucks for the 8MB cache. I doubt it will make any difference at all, but it was only 8 bucks.

Hopefully I won't lose interest in this by the time it all arrives at my house. Haha.

Holy ****, I'm planning on spending ton's less than you. Find a HDD on rebate, buying a Network from a friend for $20 or so, and the HDLoader software on eBay.
