tune

vt. [from automotive or musical usage] To optimize a
program or system for a particular environment, esp. by adjusting
numerical parameters.

The meaning of this word is a common misconception among GTPlanet users.

It would almost appear that here, the word "tune" means, "load the engine with the best upgrades, as to generate as much horsepower as physically possible."

I beg to differ.

Shall we?

There are a LOT of users who would tell you that they are fully aware of what "tuning" a car really means. Only new and inexperienced players maximize their horsepower without adjusting anything else. Remember, there are thousands of members on GTP.

System- Being the gearbox

Numerical Parameters- Gear Ratios

💡

and the suspension, VCD, LSD, downforce, the list goes on.

In my book Tune means to tune the settings, Soup up or Hop up or Hot up the car means to fit better parts more power etc.

System: Suspension

Numerical Parameters: Bound/Rebound rates, Spring rates, toe/camber (in degrees), suspension stroke, etc. etc.

It just seems when someone says the word tuned, it instantly registers as 1000+ horsepower.

This shouldn't be.

I don't know where you're getting this hypothesis from, but it's insulting to those of us who know tuning involves more than maxing out a car's horsepower. Instead of starting an entire thread about this, why not address the problem where you're finding it in other threads? This is pretty much pointless.

I'm glad that you already understand the meaning of the word.

My intent was to promote more sparing usage of it by those who believe it means otherwise.

"Tuning" means adding "race mods" like giant wings, ugly front end kits, ghastly paint-and-vinyl jobs, and wheels that are far larger in diameter than any engineer ever intended to go under the car, despite the resultant horrific impact on ride quality, handling, and overall gearing. And if it's not in GT4 I'm going to go to Japan and Kill Yamauchi, then hold my breath until I turn blue.

Duh.

What's with the constant change of accounts Street Fighter?

Tune = To adjust settings of your car
Modify = To give u nos n dubz y0! Well no but you know what I mean.

I haven't been able to find a name that I'm satisfied with.

It almost got changed to Mad Fighter for the sake of easier recognition, but you'll have to thank BAZZ for convincing me otherwise. However, you seemed to know who I was before anyhow, so I may as well stick with this one. Especially after writing a 3400+ character post..

Nice post duke.

Good times.

Ha... I remember the day I thought tuning was just dumping everything on the car that supposingly had to do something with performance (First days of GT3)...

I still struggle to understand how to tune my cars more than a couple changes... But I'm glad that I know tuning is extremely important nowadays... It can seriously make or break the performance of a car... no matter what the numbers say...

i associate tuning with adjustments of what you already have....

so if you say, "i put a suspension in my car. i put a (insert blank) in my car," etc... then you really aren't tuning anything.

i mean.....it only makes sense. why express actions with invalid statements?
