Just one question for you. Do you honestly believe your arms and legs faster and more precise than your fingers? Your fingers that have evolved over millions of years to handle such work as opposed to your arms for reach and your legs and feet which you stand on.
Fingers can't be more precise at pressing buttons. Sorry, but a button is either on or off, although there may be some "sensitivity" to them. Even if there was, being smooth is no easy task. I have already told you that I am faster than the wheel, so yes. I do think you can be more precise with a wheel. Whether or not this makes them faster depends on the driver's style of driving.

Even if I was faster with a pad, I would never switch to one. Some people like using a wheel.

At the moment there are 3 arcade time trials, where fastest time on PRO-physics is driven using a pad.Fuji F Amuse 2000 and Ford GT LM spec ll.Daytona Road Ford GT LM spec ll.Why is it that with simulation settings the fastest time,in a game as good as this,is a controller driver? That should not be the case, even if your'e a 'pro padler'.
In a game like this, with pro physics, you shouldn't be able to get better times with pad than a scilful driver with a wheel!Even thoe the physics are totaly different.
I want some chanchngs on that.Or at least show us if the time is made by a wheel or a pad.You can see it when watching a replay at driver view(wheel movement),but only with those 10 fastest.
I want justice and glory to steering wheel drivers! I HATE THAT :)

Thanx a lot, you just saved me a lot of money! 👍 Maybe a wheel is more fun but no way it is or should be faster, that'd be like cheating.
ugh no thanx again, no G25 whatever wheel for me, DS3 all the way :)

it would be cheating beceause a wheel is more fun(realistic)and so it shouldn't be faster???....
please explain.....
spyrrari.

Sorry, but a button is either on or off - That is not right, the analog stick and action buttons of DS2 or Sixaxis are analogical, "have intensity" you can control the amount of throttle and braking so as steering.

Simply the pad is faster at a sequence of corners then the wheel is.

For me using a wheel is just a matter of fun not efficiency.

No i meant it would be cheating, IF using a wheel was actually faster than using a pad...since not everybody can afford a wheel it would be very unfair!

Not really "cheating" even in its most vague of definitions.

The majority of players of GT5 Prologue will play with a pad. Fact.
So, its basically a decision of "should we make it fair and allow both types of gamers compete on even ground?"
I think its already pretty fair, the only differences seemingly between pad and wheel is how good the person using it is. So, because more people use pads, its going to be likely that more people are going to be good with pads than good with wheels. Hence the leaderboard.

This isn't really an issue with the game, maybe they could make wheel-only and pad-only leaderboards, but that might be hard to implement or it may lead to having a few too many different leaderboards (I'd assume you'd want a sepereate wheel-only leadersboard for all the other game modes, races, etc). I don't see it changing any time soon. Nor do I see them changing how effective pads are, but perhaps they will adjust wheels in future.

Think about it! There's probably more than 10 fold the amount of players who only have a pad... There should be someone who could at least match the players with a wheel, although I agree the wheel provide better control.

Actually its your skills and not the controller you use to get better times !
Im glad you can do the same times with DS3/DS2 or a wheel, its just a matter of choice :)
And yes the majority will use a pad for GT5, so don't be surprised to see some of them on the top of the time-trial rankings :sly:

What you are used to doing and what fits you're style have a lot more to do with you're time than what is technically "better", and I agree the wheel is a better choice. However I have years of experience driving a car with a pad in GT and very little with a wheel. So my times suffer when I use my wheel.
My point for style I'll use my self if you guys remember GTHD. For a while prob a month or two I was always in the top 5 if not first on the reverse track, but I couldn't break in to the top 5 to save my life going forward. Driving that track forward took a different style the corners where downhill and closing in radius not up hill and opening witch fits me better.
Another point to that end would be look at NASCAR rookies this year most of theses guys are CHAMPIONS in open-wheel, so they know how to drive a car. Yet some of them are struggling with a stock car why? Its a totally different style I think it was said best in days of thunder " back in open wheel you're car weighed half as much and you're tires where twice as wide, now you're car weighs twice as much and you're tires are half as wide"

PD doesn't make great control for the gamepad just for nothing. This is a console game and most people, millions of people who buy the GT game don't use a wheel, it's too expensive- mainly for that matter. If GT5 will have the same controll with a gamepad as LFS on PC, then it's doomed as it would be impossible to drive well, people will not buy it, or not buy it until a racing wheel costs about 40-50 bucks.

I switched from Pad to wheel (G25) in January (when I got GT5P Japanese version). It took me a while to reach the level of performance I was getting with the pad, but now I get similar times. I don't think a wheel will significantly improves your times (it should not be a factor of decision to buy one), however I found the overall racing experience much better. The girl friend was never interested to play with a pad but she quite enjoys driving the Golf on Fuji with the wheel :-)
One thing though : if you look at the #1 on all leaderboards, most are achieved with a G25 with clutch enabled. Just whatch the replays, the sound of the cars is so good.

If 'enable' means 'with clutch',your wrong.I see very rearly times in top 10,that are driven with clutch on!You can see if clutch is used by pressing squere when watching those replays and see if N flashes between changings.

thats what the guy is saying if you take the time and pay attention rather than pounding him straight away..!!

If you were to fit a pad to a modern vehicle (say an M5 for sake of argument as they most likely all electronic inputs anyway..steering, throttle etc) you think you would be able to get it around a track faster than you would with the wheel..not a chance.

so if it turns out that you cant get nr the top ten with the wheel, no matter how good you are..id say maybe there is a problem :nervous: depending on how much of a sim you want GT to be.??

This is NOT about me getting my times in top 10,I do!!This just anoys me in general,I want this game to be that good so that I can cal it a real sim.No mather how good you are with that pad, dont let him/her beeing the fastest of all in a real world like 'game'.
Playing GT5P with G25 and clutch is far moore realistic than any other consol game with pad.Thats why im asking a little moore 'thruth' to this awesome game! :)

Oops! I didn't even think about the analogue sticks. I still find myself faster with a wheel, but I see what you're talking about.

I would like it to be 'that good' too but it's not going to be because although the game's much more of a sim than the Need for speed sort of games it's still a console game, 90% (maybe more ?) of people who buy the game wouldn't buy it if it was so hard you NEEDED a wheel

Well others have pointed out that all controls on a sixaxis are analogue, however there is still more to it that that. If you are holding your foot over the brake pedal and I am holding my finger over the brake button, who do you think is going to be braking first? Is your leg going to beat the reaction time of my finger? Not until I am 90.

Plus I have experienced first hand in FM2 that the pad is faster. Using a Toyota GT1 at Suzkua I could set a reasonable time in the top 10 with the wheel, but with the pad I could match my wheel ghost around the sweepers, but when quick changes of direction were needed I was able to make time with the pad. And that was coming off the back of using the wheel exclusively. I was not used to the pad at that point.

Its simply faster flicking your thumb rather than crossing your arms, especially when FFB wheels offer resistance.

If one is comfortable with both, they would understand that the wheel is definitely not a disadvantage. It is, in fact, often easier to attain better times with the wheel due to the increased level of control.

Plus, Its not just the cost factor for some, its also the spare 'space' factor. I know personally that I do not have anywhere near the amount of room required to fit a wheel and accompanying (and moderately sized) cockpit in my room. There is roughly 40cm between the end of my bed and the TV screen; It isnt going to happen, regardless of wheher I or someone else wants to actually use a wheel.

i switch between wheel and pad, depending on my mood. if i feel like getting the full on feel, i go for wheel. if i want to veg, i go pad :D

i reckon i get better times with the wheel. thats probably because i get into it more in that scenario, and i'm a little choppy with the pad

here's my humble set up...

19" widescreen hd tv, driving force ex wheel, and a dodgy unit from argos :D

Space factor and esthetic factor...
I had to review my whole trategy...When I bought the PS3, I decided that it would be my home entertainement and set it up in the living room. I was playing with the pad. When I got the wheel, I had no way to fix it anywhere in the living room, so I was left with the decision to move the PS3 in the spare bedroom and use the wheel (I have a desk there), or leave it in the living room and use the pad.
What made me decide is when one day I was playing (in the living room) with the wheel fixed on the ironing board and my GF just arrived in the appartement. Try to picture that. I felt stupid and moved everything to the bedroom :-)

Im into the pad to be honist.I posted the 2nd fastest time on Fuji F in the Integra (pro) but cant go any faster no matter how hard I try!!!!!.
The guy/gal? in P1 is sooooo fast and I swear they are useing a wheel???
Check out the replay or ghost and tell me what you think???

Getting the gas or brake down faster is not the only thing to think about. Assume you are driving a TVR with no traction control. Who is going to have an easier time controlling the throttle and keep the power at the limit of wheelspin?

each to there own. I too like to switch from pad and wheel depending on my mood. In my experience i have found that i am quicker with the wheel on pro settings with no assists because you can be super smooth and manage your tyre friction better. I improved my suzuka time by 1.5 seconds with the wheel in the gtr and made the top 3.

My rule is that the more technical the circuit, the more effective the wheel becomes.

also when it comes to drifting i use the pad, i find it much harder with the wheel

I don't really play drift mode, but I remember trying on GTHD (at the time I didn't have a wheel) and found that very difficult with the pad.
I played it again recently with the wheel and it was so much easier.

From my personal experience, I can get better times with the wheel than with the controller. And there are two main reasons for it:

1st - With a controller I can't (lack of skill) drive with manual transmission. I haven't enough fingers for it (lol), and automatic makes me lose time.

2nd - I have much more precise control steering, braking and accelerating.

PS - It's true that you probably can move your fingers faster than your legs, but when you're driving in a game that is coming closer to a simulator, it's more important the intensity of the inputs you give, because the time of "ON" and "OFF" (in braking and in accelerating) is over. In GT4 it was already over concerning the throttle (not so much in braking), I expect that in GT5P (and later in GT5) everyone that is used to rely on heavy breaking alone will have a hard time.

well i do think that to each there own, i have never owned a wheel basically for the money and space factor so ive gotten good with the pads

i think that everyone should just have the same oportunities at getting the best times regardless of what kind of controller theyre using

Getting the gas or brake down faster is not the only thing to think about. Assume you are driving a TVR with no traction control. Who is going to have an easier time controlling the throttle and keep the power at the limit of wheelspin?

I dont think you need pedals to control wheel spin. I will mention a game that is far removed from a sim here, however in PGR3 there was a car called the F50GT. A monster with a very hard to control rear end. But with the pad I was totally able to tame it, being able to get just the right amount of oversteer I needed to make turns at a competitive level. That was using triggers and I was not lacking in throttle finesse to anyone.

The triggers on the dualshock 3 are crap mainly due to their placement, but give me 360 pad triggers and i'll have throttle control far in excess of a pedal. Its still what I was saying before, fingers verses a lumbering foot. Fingers win because they were designed for it.

And again I should mention that PGR3 is very far from a sim, but you still need very good control to be good. And many of the cars very challenging to drive precisely, and you need to be precise. At the cybergames that I attended you had the option to bring a wheel if you drove with one, but of all the top racers who competed, not one was using a wheel. But make of that what you will.

I've said it again and again. You may be faster with a pad for certain reasons, but I am faster with a wheel whether or not you think I should. I'm not sure where PGR3 comes in, because that game was designed to be controlled with a pad. And did you ever think that it might be inconvenient for someone to bring a wheel with them for a competition?
