Hey guys, Im new to the forums ( to be honest, Ive always broawsed around the forums to see whats new) now ive finally signed up. Ok, Ive got 2 Questions to ask.

1. Will GT4 Include 3D rims? I know yu may say its not that big of a deal, but at the beginning of a race, when the camera goes down to the wheel, I just dont like seeing paperthin rims. Anybody know that answer?

2. What do YOU think will be the worst part of GT4? I would have to say the "minivan" cars...For example the Vitz,,,,I do not think I would EVER want to buy, tune and drive a Vitz, Except if I HAVE to (such as a Vitz tournament)

So, 2 questions, give me your answers...

1. They can have 3D spectators, so I don't see why they couldn't have 3D rims (I'd rather have the rims). But I don't think rims are 3D at this point.

2. Worst part? The Model T 20 lap endurence at Nürburgring, LOL!

...the Vitz isn't a minivan... :odd:

1. I don't know. GT4 isn't out yet. I'm not PD. Don't ask me.

The Vitz/Yaris isn't a minivan, as The359 just pointed out. It's a hatchback - it's 11'10" long, for crying out loud.

Oh, come on, its got the speed, handling and styling of a minivan...and, as you can see I put minivan in quotes to show that I was just jokeing around......

Answers to your questions:

1 - No (and yes). The rims will look like they did in GT3, but they added a bit of depth to them now. For example, instead of the rim looking like this:

|
|
|

They now would look like this:

\
/
|
\
/

The rim looks better when it's spinning this way. Compare a spinning rim in GT to a spinning rim in NFS:U and you'll see what I mean - the sense of speed looks better when it's worked out like that. Add to that, the fact that they now have proper chrome rims in the game (complete with specularity and reflections).

2 - The worst for me would be nitpicky things such as: my car isn't in the game :) and I can't play all tracks with my custom car settings in simulation mode if I want to do the 3 screen/3 TV/3 PS2 iLink mode.

Thanks jizzmirk....And to prove my minivan point even further....

Yeah, the Odyssey is a minivan...the Vitz is not.

Think more Rav4, here in America, than minivan. Google it for a pic.

The Vitz looks very big in GT3, but in GT2 it looks much smaller.

1. I dont see how they would have the blurring effect of the rims by having 3d rims, since the blurring is done by updating a texture. i would assume adding 3d rims and achieving the same effect would involve some intense calculations causing a hit on the fps. Plus when you have texture for a rim instead of a 3d model, you're rendering so much less polygons on the wheel. but then again ive never seen the gt4 code, so how would i know

2. imposed driving aids on new physics engine that take away from the sim feel.

mmm... minivan, doh!

You guys are slipping, this is reply number 9 and still no one's welcomed him or told him to use the search function! It's just unbelievable.

The rims I don't know... The worst part? Well uh, let's wait for Viper Zero to find this thread and tell you ;)

Well, I don't rip on new members. I have a tendency to answer questions even if they are worthless. In so, it would be weird to imagine GT4 without 3D rims. I think I read somewhere on GTPlanet or some other site, that the cars will probably feature somewhere around 5,000 polygons. But when it comes to the rims, I'll be honest. I'm about finding little details, but I really wouldn't care. I mean, it isn't like you can purchase rims off of an El Dorado lowrider or anything. Then, how would you be able to see the brake rotors light up on the cars?

And the worst part of the game? It's May 19th, 2004, 11:57 PM Central Daylight Time, and still the game has not been released. That's the worst part.

Sorry - I totally forgot a welcome. :O So WELCOME (to your new) HOME new guy! :)

I don't mind how GT3/4 have done the wheel blurring. But there is a game that does the 3D rim and 2D blurring.

Check out some videos of Juiced. They have 3D rims while the wheel is spinning slow, but when the car and wheels really get going, then it turns to that flat 2D blurred rim. And you know what, it works

If the rim were to stay 3D - it wouldn't be so much a hit on the FPS, it just doesn't look as natural.

Best response ever.

Making Rims polygonal imho is not worth the polygons you´ll have to spend in order to make them look good. Plus you´d also have to texture them anyway. I´d rather spend those tris on the rest of the model instead.

In the example from a Porsche i modeled, one rim weights in at 362 tris. 362*4 =1448. So you´d have 1448 tris more to spend on the cars body, which is a lot.

We had 5000 per car in GT3, I don't know what the GT4 count is but that's probably a quarter to a fifth. Sounds like you did pretty detailed models though, they may cut corners.

" ... We had 5000 per car in GT3, I don't know what the GT4 count is but that's probably a quarter to a fifth ... "

I dont get the " quarter to fifth " part :)

The Porsche i modeled weights in at around 6.2Ks. Could lessen the polycount a bit, but not w/o loosing some detail, so i left it like this ...

As for GT4, i personally do not think they could quench many more polies per car out of the engine. What is really impressing though, is the very clean Reflection Mapping. This is not easy to achieve with so few polies ...

Sorry, wasn't explicit - I was saying that GT3 had 5000 polygons per car, so if it takes 1400-1500 to render 4 rims well, that's about a quarter to a fifth taken up solely by the rims, depending on if they increase the polygon count per car.

If you have GT concept take out the RX8 for a bit of a free run and look at its 3D chromes. They look AWSOME in replays!

With all the different types of wheels to choose from, sometimes I can't choose the correct type to put on to a car. Sometimes I color coordinate nice cars, sometimes I look for silver-like wheels for cars initially equipped with ugly dark rims. I don't think you'd want to do this with classic or vintage cars. Don't choose the wrong rims for that lovely vintage Honda that was shown in Amalfi pictures, for example.

I've never gotten into rims, whatever it comes with it generally stays with in my garage.

i'm not bothered by the inclusion of mini-vans and slow hatchbacks. anyone who played prologue will tell you that the honda's spoon tuned fit is amazing and the odysey is pretty wicked fast for what it is. it has minimum body roll which is amazing for a car that size.

remember, gt is a simulation of driving of great cars from all different manufacturers. the same reason you get the honda odysey is the same reason you get every variation of gt-r skyline and every version of the evolution.

Ya, I realize that its a simulation game, but lets be a little bit honest here, I dont think I would wast one dime of my credits on a minivan...I just dont think that it would be fun to drive around Laguna Seca or the ring in a family van...Even if I do buy it, why would I Want to go fast in a vehicle made to carry 5 kids, some cargo and a wife?

Cause some race are going to recuire it?

But I know what you mean, you'll just use it for those races and no more....

That's not the question. The question is can YOU go fast in a minivan? If you're able to extract track speed out of a car not designed for it, would you not feel slightly rewarded - or even smug?

Nope, I'd think it was sad.

This is the first time I'm trying out this bit of vB code, so here goes:

Dare I say, Renault Espace F1? Come on, now. You knew it was coming! :D

Yes that was great fun to drive.:p

Yeah. Haul groceries. Haul kids. Haul ass. Nothing like it, folks!
