You can easily find V8 foxes for that price.
I'd buy an older pickup.

NO way would you find a V8 fox for that. They are around $3 to $5k same for the trucks. I know I was looking for a sub $1500 truck this summer.

1995 Dodge Neon ACR. Assuming the Koni's weren't blown (they would be) it would be a really fun car to throw around.

Re: Running NA MX-5 Miata's for sub $1,000 in the USA rarely happens, especially in warm weather states where they carry a "Warm weather tax" as I call it.

$600. :)

$1000 dollars doesn't really get you much in the US compared to the UK.. (£620ish)

Check out the UK's Autotrader. You'll be shocked as to what you can get!

A decent fox for a grand? Haha, I dunno about that... Unless it's a half rusted 2.3...
My old fox was pretty mint for the price I got it for and most decent 5.0L foxes still go for at least 3 grand around here.
I could have picked up a '91 302 Fox off my friend for $500 that had custom Boss livery on it.

Sometimes you need to take risks to have something great. That's how I look at it. Then again I'm getting into the restoration scene.

Start with that pile of rust in your avatar. :p

A truck is one of the easiest projects to start with. Bulky metal you can hamer into shape, few curves and redneck level engineering.

As for the 1000 $ car.. 730 €. That would give you a late 90's Ford Fiesta or something similar in the Netherlands. Anything bigger would be utter crap to buy and will cost you a lot more after a week of driving.

I live in the snow belt so rust always poses an issue. I am very surprised at the condition of the vehicle underneath though, as the frame is spotless and the cross members are good as well. I did a rust walk around a few days ago. I agree they are very easy to work on and the end result is usually very nice. The body is what's bad right now though. That's been replaced several times due to road salt :/ At least we are currently stocking up on body parts, hopefully soon teardown will begin.

Why do they go so cheap? Have they been run into the ground?

I think it's the best car I can have for $1,000 (~30,000 rubles) in my country.

Not really. I think there are a few factors mainly:

1) Oversupply
2) People always wanting the latest thing - cars depreciate pretty quickly here because most people don't keep a car for longer than about three years. This also leads to point 1.
3) Rising costs of driving. It's particularly easy to get an older car with a massive engine cheaply, because maintenance, fuel, tax and insurance costs are so high.

Obviously the prices of rarer cars do eventually rise, but ubiquitous stuff just goes down and down until all the cars are either gone or left in the hands of collectors.

Though to directly reference your question, our weather does mean a lot of cars end up scrapped or valueless due to rust.

I watch Wheeler Dealers religiously. It's probably my favorite show, but it makes me so jealous of how much car you can get for so little money over there.

I can't seem to find anything interesting locally for less than 1k. For example: a '91 CRX Si with 250k miles but a bunch of recent maintenance is going for $2200! A CRX shell - SHELL - is up for $650. I initially went after an S13 240SX coupe (something I want anyway)... no way.

I'm a bit jealous of the UK too. I really kinda want to move over there not just for how cheap you can get a car and the fact that you can own a Nissan Skyline GT-R without much trouble or a Ford Escort Cosworth. I'm really annoyed with the safety & EPA regulations that my country has sometimes.

I agree 100% I would love a used car market like the UK

Wait until you see the running costs :indiff:.

Quite. Takes the fun out of being able to buy cars like that when you pay $8-9 per gallon and have insurance quotes well into the thousands...

Personally I'd prefer to pay a little extra for the car, fill it up at $3.50 a gallon and drive it on some empty roads. Grass is always greener though, isn't it!
