JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT it was safe to rip the 5 Series, our spy shooter captured the fourth-generation M5.

Flared-out wheel arches, beefed-up door sills, a deep rear valance and the M-trademark quad exhaust pipes suggest that when it comes to tomorrow’s M5, the scales are tipped toward maintaining its performance crown. A widened stance and lowered ride height, deeper chin spoiler, and what appear to be 18-inch tires up front and 19-inchers aft further the performance message.

The car is set to debut in the States by the end of 2004, and will carry an F1-inspired 500-plus-hp V10, according to BMW sources. Exact displacement of the normally aspirated engine—replacing the current M5’s 394-hp 4.9-liter V8—is unknown; various sources peg it at between 5.0 and 5.5 liters.

The engine forgoes new direct-injection technology found on BMW’s V12 and the much-touted Valvetronic intake lift control employed by BMW’s inline fours and V8s. Instead, it will have a third-generation version of the company’s Vanos variable valve timing system and four-valve heads similar to those on the F1 car. “They are more suited to the performance characteristics of the engine,” one insider said.

Despite monstrous output, the new V10 inherits the free-revving nature of previous M- division powerplants; fuel cutoff could be set as high as 9000 rpm. As a result, this M5 should have enough top-end poke to match any four-door. With suitable gearing, it should get to 60 mph from a standstill in less than 4.5 seconds, slashing three-tenths of a second from the official time achieved by the outgoing model, and making it the fastest-accelerating M-car ever. Top speed will be limited to 155 mph.

A new six-speed manual gearbox, available in a conventional or sequential manual configuration, will handle the power. BMW marketing execs want to include a six-speed automatic to up U.S. interest.

Underpinning the new M5 will be a heavily reworked version of the 5 Series’ MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension. It will use alumi-num and lightweight wheel bearings aimed at reducing weight and sharpening response. Stiff springs, firm dampers and rework-ed bushings complete the formula.

In a move inspired by the sales success of the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Estate and Audi RS6 Avant, BMW also intends to offer the M5 in a station wagon version for the first time—unlikely for U.S. sale, however—that’s rumored for 2005.

Awesome. I know it's going to look absolutely beautiful in person.

The old body style is starting to look a bit dated.

It looks like a pontiac grand prix...and as far as the "F1 inspired V10"....Arn't they v12's?...Anyway..The 850i is so much more pimp than that car....Hell it's one of the best Bimmers ever produced..too bad it's not produced no mo

Thank god they will keep the manual tranny for it

F1 uses V10 engines.

I agree with Josh, that should definitely look beautiful in person. It's really not that bad. The rear end's the only thing with a few problems.

The front 'hey, let's go rip off Audi' wheels have got to go - please choose the rears, BMW! I love it. Excepting extremely minor design points on the 5-series, I've got no beef with it. Obviously, the current (E39) 5-series is the non-threatening safe choice for BMW, but the new one looks like a hit.

Those shots look like Nurburgring testing, where they never seem to have the definitive wheels on, probably something to do with the rate at which the test cars go through tyres.

I like the front, though I can see how it might be looked at as being "Grand Prix-ish". The back is just my only beef, and not a big one. If they could not have the lights slope down so much, they'd really be onto something...just my opinion though. Any price set yet?

Oh my god, where did all these fans come from?...It looks like complete crap..crap crap crap crap. The entire from fascia looks like crap..The rear end looks like a cross between a hyundai and some kind of VW, and that exhaust..Oh my god that is AWFUL looking...It looks like they couldn decide if they wanted a wind diffuser or not.

It's not going to look beautiful in person..The current ones look beautiful in person and in pictures...This one is going to look like just another POS mom sedan with a BMW logo and a "M5" on the back

relating to these two quotes, i thought i'd give the e60 a chance until i saw it in person, and when i did i almost collapsed in laughter (well not really) but it made me feel sorry for the people who bought it. if you are going to buy a car that ugly, you may as well settle for something japanese or korean. no i haven't seen the e60 M5, but due to the subtle differences the M cars tend to have between the stock versions, i can safely say that this will be one nasty car. but like someone said on an M5 forum, if people keep buying these kind of cars, they will keep making them. if i had £60-100k to spend on a car, i'd be looking at an sl55, e55, or a 996 gt2/3 certainly NOT an m5 no matter how well it handles or how fast it is. oh yeah another thing, limiting them to 155mph, someone enjoys shooting their own cars in the foot right? :D

a massive thumbs down to this car. not because its a particularly ugly car, there are plenty of cars worse off, but because we know bmw are able to make master pieces, yet they decide to employ people like bangle who doesn't know a wheel from an elbow.

First - the current ones look boring and dated in pictures. They've been selling them since 1997 or so, and it's getting old. It's about time for a re-design, and I'm glad that they're not going for another boring "sure thing" 5-series.

When the new 7-series came out, everybody who pretended to know anything about cars got on the 'the 7-series is ugly' bandwagon. The first year it was for sale, sales jumped 20%. It didn't silence the critics, but BMW didn't really care about the critics at that point. Are you in the market for a new $70,000 super sedan? Because if you aren't, I don't thing BMW gives a damn about what you think of the new M5.
