Ford today unveiled the Mustang Giugiaro concept — a one-off design study by Fabrizio Giugiaro, styling director of Italdesign. Ford officials aren't saying anything, but there's speculation in the automotive that Giugiaro concept might preview some aspects of the next-generation 'Stang.

Visually, the Mustang by Giugiaro appears more compact than the production car, thanks to a reduction of the rear overhang and a signature Giugiaro “trick” of tapering the angles on the car to the limit of its mechanical outlines. The vibrant orange concept is wider than the production version. The Giugiaros added 30 millimeters to the front, gradually expanding the width by a full 80 millimeters toward the rear.

The 500 horsepower car features a single curved glass panel that bridges the windshield and rear window, serving as the concept’s roof. Produced by Solutia of Detroit, the panel is made from a special type of crystal that filters out 100 percent of UVA rays while providing unfettered vista views. The car's doors open vertically, with hinges at the base of the upright A-pillar.

...Wow, I'm amazed. Ford really pulled it off with this one, making the Mustang look a bit more modern while still continuing the classic looks. It kinda reminds me of the early '70s Mustangs, just a bit, but I'm not sure. I prefer the production model (at the moment), but I do expect a few things to come through to the production model with the long-rumored 2009 "refresh."

@McLaren: I thought Camaro when I first saw it too, but then I picked up on the Mustang cues. It isn't a horrible copy, but you can see that they have done it just a bit...

I think it's a fair concept model. Not a home run by any means. Few good details here and there. What I like the best about it is the lean looking body. I love the look of the current Mustangs, but it is kind of bubbly, especially around the rear.

Now, one thing I don't like about this concept would be the odd placement of the taillights.

Finally a talented designer is hired to bring a good forward-thinking design to the American market. I feel that the roofline is a bit too low, but overall good progression, I approve.

Has anyone heard any Giugiaro interviews or quotes? The guy's hilarious - borderline crazy.

Real Cowhide seats? Wonderful!

I actually like the tail-lights, although the overall shape might be a bit conservative (read: conventional), the proportions are spot-on, in the classic sense.

What disappoints me, actually, is that he didn't take enough chances with the front end... With that wild rear, sexy greenhouse and finely crafted interior, having a sort of Mustang-M6 nose is a bit of a let-down. Concept cars aren't supposed to look that ready for production... :D :D :D

Bah, that is downright hideous, IMO. It also borrows way too much styling cues from the camaro concept. The current generation mustang design looks much better than that. Honestly, what Ford ought to do with the Mustang is fix some of the design flaws in the current generation model. The styling is decent in the current generation model, but the execution some of the functional parts of the car is sub par (I.E. hard to read gauge cluster, lack of automatic exterior lighting, no interior trunk release other than on the key remote). My parents own a 2006 Mustang and those are just some of the things that irritate me about the car's design.

Throw on the classic tail lights and it has my vote. As far as the comparison with the Camaro... well of course they look similar. The Camaro was a complete copy of the Mustang in the first place (but originally and with todays new version.) They are Pony cars... they have to be made very similar, as if they get to different the manufacturer might lose sales (that always seems to be the fear with manufacturers.) I could go back to when the Camaro was in the 60's or in 2005(?) debuted and say "Could Chevy not show any more uniqueness in this? Looks like the d*mn Mustang." Except, I probably would have left out that certain word. I am a darn man myself... lol.

Keep it real fellas,

...I think the seats are awesome! You wouldn't see that in a BMW...

(I wonder what PETA will have to say about it...)

Dunno what you guys are smoking, but that is 12 kinds of kick ass.

It looks a lot more lewd in that color than it really is, and naturally some things would be toned down, but the slope to the rear, the hood, the hips, the tapers.

It screams "Mustang" but it doesn't scream "1960's Mustang" like the current one does.

Big thumbs up, but I don't know which emoticon it is, so d^_^b!

Front: nice
Side view: gorgeous
Rear: hideous
Interior: O....M.....G :yuck:

and i really dont like the all glass look of the roof. i hate that every time i see it. give me a flipping roof panel, it's a coupe for petes sake.

I spotted this the other day on supercars.net, personally I like it, it looks pretty decent. The rear is a bit different sure, it's not totally ugly imo, maybe just a bit too different. The front is one of the weaker aspects of the car imo becuase it's too conventional. The interior is amazing and the side profile screams sportscar like no Mustang has before, that's a good thing because it still has that Mustang look about it, if it lost that it'd be a bad thing in this case but they haven't. The glass canopy roof would never see production, personally, again I like it a lot. But I wouldn't be too thrilled at buying a car with one, can you imagine the look on the autoglass mans face when he has to fit it on the road side. And the bill afterwards .

I wouldn't want to see it in a BMW. Hell, I'm not surprised Ford did that. But that rear is ugly. I'm surprised I can keep looking at the side.

They should definitely use that front design on the new Mustang. The current one's is kind of boring, especially the V6 model.

actualy the more i look at the front the more i like it. definately a hundred times better than the camaros' face. but my lord that rear!

Real Cowhide seats? Wonderful!

That's going to smell wonderful when the sun shines through all that glass and turns your car into a beef oven.

I don't know the front of that car reminds me of the BMW 6 series....

But not bad IMO.

Ciao!

I think the taillights need to scurry back to their hole where they belong. Otherwise, it looks fantastic, like the transition from '64.5-66/'67-69

I like it. Maybe the front could be changed some more, but all the rest looks really nice. The sidemirrors look too small though.

Love it! The front could be made a a little more aggressive though.

Just an observation: This car defines "Love or Hate" styling, from the reactions in this thread.

I think the rear looks fine. They are obviously going for more of the look from the first-generation Mustangs...
