Here is some interesting news for GM fans:

Leftlanenews.com
Seeking to build on the 25-percent retail sales gain by the G6 so far this year, Pontiac is revealing a new G6 GXP coupe show car at the upcoming New York International Auto Show. Designed to augment the G6’s sleek styling with a more aggressive appearance and stance, the new GXP show car will test both media and public reaction before any final decision on production is made. “Although the GXP performance series has been very successful in the past, we’ve never attempted to introduce a GXP on our largest volume vehicle and we want to be sure we do it right,” said Dennis Maraone, Pontiac product director. “We believe the package of exterior, interior and performance enhancements we’ve put together on the G6 GXP show car should appeal to 2+2 coupe enthusiasts.”

Highlighting the exterior styling changes is a redesigned front fascia, featuring an integrated lower air dam and an aggressive chrome treatment of Pontiac’s signature twin-port grille, as well as a twin air scoop hood. Around back, the new rear fascia shows off the dual chrome-tipped exhaust and unique “hammerhead” spoiler. Side rocker panels, 19-inch wheels, vented cross-drilled brake rotors, and a 25-mm reduction in suspension height finish off the GXP’s ground-hugging appearance.

Inside, red accents give the GXP a sportier flavor than a standard G6. The red chrome trim on the instrument cluster, center stack and door controls augments the red leather seat and door panel inserts.

Under the hood, the G6 GXP uses a modified 3.9-liter V-6 engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Linking a ram air induction system with K&N air filter to a cat-back free flowing exhaust helps boost engine output to 270 horsepower (202 kw) and 259 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm).

The GXP performance series was introduced in 2003 with the Bonneville GXP. The Grand Prix GXP joined the line in 2005 and currently accounts for 30 percent of all Grand Prix retail sales. The Solstice GXP launches this fall.

I like it, and yet I dont. The whale tail spoiler is just a bit too big, and the grille is somewhat awkward. I'd have to see it in person to draw the best conclusion, but it nevertheless is an interesting new model.

Other than the spoiler (which I think is trying to evoke a Firebird piece, but failing), I like it a lot! Especially the front, which looks nice and agressive. The shiny red interior is a nice touch, too...

That steering wheel isn't coated with buttons.. HERESY!

I like it. It looks real mean, and I really like the interior Trim.

It's like some bastard child of a G35, pre 80's 911 Turbo, and one of those mangled "Tuner" BMW 6 series with the stupidly distorted kidney grilles.

Plus it's FWD, FTL!

Just because people like to have this sort of negative attitude only because it's a GM, I hope it comes to market with enough beans to make sure all Si's, GTI's, Integras, and Celicas see is that big-arse spoiler.

Nissan does a 250something horse FWD Altima SE-R and it's cool, GM does this and it's crap.

Poverty
Looks like the skyline coupe or a riced up 350z from the back.
I'm seeing 350Z in the back too, the front looks very different to anything else I can think of though. Overall not a bad looking car, but could do with a different spoiler, perhaps a more subtle one. I'm in two minds about the car, it's like Bullseye.

Actually, if they can get it to perform well, that's not a bad looking car. GM can make a decent car, they just usually choose not to. :dopey:

The two big turn off's for me are thoes intakes on the bonnet, they look vulgar and ungainly imo and the dodgy rear wing, which also looks ungainly and very out of place. If they changed thoes it'd be a good looking car imo.

To make it look better they should have a plain bonnent and either loose the chrome off the grill or make the grill smaller with a deep front bumper intake.

I like the intakes, they just need to be a lot smaller and more sleek. That's been a pontiac thing for a while now so they're probably not going to mess with it too much.

Yeah, the wing is overkill

The wing is just a bit too over the top, it doesn't look like it was actually considered during the styling of this car. It's aas if one of the designers said "Hey, let's put a wing on this too, better make it big, all the kids like big spoilers" and the bonnet scoops look exactly like something off a Honda Civic from NFS.

But the overall shape of the car is very nice indeed and I do quite like the look of the grille, nice wheels too, they add to the car well.

With a nice powerful engine it should be very quick and more tractable cross country with a long-legged V6 rather than something like an SRT4 with the turbocharged 4.

If Pontiac manage to make it handle well this will be a hugely viable competitor to Civic Si's, SRT4s, Ion Redlines, Cobalt SS and the rest of the FWD Sport hatch/coupe group.

I don't mind it but I do not like the engine choice, why not just pull the 2.4L Turbo outta the Soltice GXP and soon to be Cobalt SS and drop it in the car? You'd get 10 more hp with a smaller engine.

I'm seeing more G35 than 350z.

I like it, though, minus the grill. It looks like a beaver or something. Way too Pontiac for me.

No they are heading in the direction they are going because of idiotic UAW workers and incompident management.

10 less hp (270 vs. 260) but 1 more ft-lb (259 vs. 260). The turbo 4 doesnt have a beefy enough FWD tranny for it, I bet. And I bet this VVT V6 has a better torque spread.

This is quite a shame. I beleive this is the best looking GM car in 20 years, by far (better looking than the 350Z, in my opinion, as this is smoother), and they are trying to ruin it with boy-racer add-ons and an overwraught front end. The powertrain behind it is relatively powerful, and if GM can fix any torque steer than the car will be fine. I doubt it will match the Altima or Accord (the 3.9 is far too unrefined of an engine, and this car is not really sporty in any sense of the word), but it will be a pretty good alternative to the Camry Solara. I do, however, like the subdued, nicely done interior. Very nice and far better than the sedan.

regardless of looks, if the car can move, its mine...

but i love how it looks.agressive, yet, reserved enough...a little ricer like but im sure that who will want to buy it too (esp. in the US)

great post

..Well, its much more agressive than the origional G6 GXP concept which I belive debuted last year at SEMA. That used the sedan platform, and sourced Cadillac for their 3.6L DOHC V6 and six-speed manual. IMO, that would be a better way to go with 255HP SMOOTH horsepower, and a better shifting six-speed. But, the beancounters got their way, and the extra horsepower and torque is going to help to make the car faster by days end. Hopefully the boys at GXP will use the same engineering ideas from the Grand Prix GXP to make this car handle, as the G6 GXP is going to be chasing down the Mazdaspeed6, VW Jetta GLI, and Accord Coupe V6.

Here is a pic of the origional concept car:

Its nice. Look if GM wants to compete they need to take hints from Nissan. There is nothing wrong with it. Just like the Japanese companies finally realizing what it takes to make an American truck that Americans like.

Tips to make it less akward... take the tips of the spoiler off the ends. Put your finger over the tip on the pictures, and boom much better. The grill needs a line that follows the line of the front bumper. You can keep a grill below that line (Intercooler type space) but, don't interrupt the bumper line, it feels strange.

Over all though, I like it. I am proud of Pontiac with their G6, they seem like they really want it to get noticed. Hard Top drop top, Coupe, and a Sedan.

I'd like to see the G6 GXP face off with the other "exiting" family coupe, the Honda Accord V6 Coupe. Should be a good matchup...

Oh dear Lord...that interior.

Must they make every surface have an elephant's arse effect?

Looks pretty sub-standard to me.

Ditch the spoiler, replace it with a smaller, more sculpted piece, yank the pushrod 3.9L dinosaur, drop in the 3.6L "High Feature V6," include a limited-slip dif and price it at or under $20k and you'll have a winner, IMHO.
