I love this pic and that new Mustang looks soo sick. Just like a modern 67 Fastback. 👍

This car is going to kick serious ass. Should be a great opponent to the new Corvette (non-Z06 model).

They should have left the 4 headlight scheme from the V8 model of the new GT. But that asside, not bad looking. I just hope they give it a better quality paint job than the new stangs. Anyone else noticed how swirly the paint is?

I disagree, the Mustang look's alot better without the 2 lights in the middle.

It's just another Ford Collector car. Not practical, not that extravigant. But not bad either

It just fits in with the Ford "We're still making alright cars here" scheme circa;
cobra(cobra)/GR-1(Daytona)/GT(Gt-40)

Gee. Who would have guessed that this would happen??
Not a bad car, and it'll likely sell very well. Still, I'd take the '67 any day.

EDIT - And for **** sake, would somebody PLEASE uncover those damn headlights!?

They say 450 plus HP, but it's powered by the same Supercharged 5.4 liter DOHC V8 as the Ford GT, in which it produces 550 hp. I'm thinking the Mustang GT500 will probably produce at least 500 hp if not the full 550. that puts it anywhere from dead even, to 50 ponys ahead of the next Z06. And if it ends up makeing any less that 500 hp, then someone at Ford is smoking something.

Love it....hate it....indifferent......regardless of your position, I can't think of a better time to be alive than during this current incarnation of horsepower wars. 500 cubic inch Vipers, 427ci Vettes with 500hp, Supercharged Cobra's with mountains of torque available to the common man for less than $35,000, etc etc etc. What a great time for automotive enthusiasts.

Some day this will all go away (just like it did once before) and people will look back and say, "Damn, I wonder what it was like to have those beautiful cars available on show room floors and to see them driving on the streets." WE look back longingly at the muscle cars of the 60's (although not so wistfully now with these beasts in our garages. ), just as future people will look back on this historical time period in automotive history as well. How can you NOT love the fact that these cars are even being built??

it looks better WITHOUT the centre lights.

I don't think so, man...thing is, the Third horsepower wars (the first was in the late 50's models) are gonna provoke the second safety wars...it's allready kicked over. Europe is the one dumping the major safety guru routine this time...I wouldn't be suprised to see a repeat of the 70's, with engines dropped down to 150 hp/PS or less again...this also invokes thoughts of OPEC embargo #2 in '13...this will even depress Europeans as if what happens last time occurs again...go carts on wheels that make a Smart look like a Mercedes S class or a ford Excursion/Chevy Suburban.

it took thirty years to recover from the safety guru's LAST batch of interference...let's hope the Europeans don't make the same mistake the US gov't did...and overdo it
*shudders at the thought of a return of the seat belt and seat weight interlock problem again*

Dude, you know I'd take your Cobra over that Mustang anyday. :p

Oh wow.. Maybe I'll rethink my RX-8 aspirations, on the second thought, I think I'll get one of each :).

I must be missing something. What are you disagreeing with? It sounds like we are saying the same thing: Enjoy the HP wars now while it's going on, before it gets shut down again for awhile. I was born in 1971, so I wasn't driving when all the old muscle was on the streets. I used to wish I had been alive back then so I could have enjoyed those cars, but the performance of today's vehicles change all that fo rme. The old muscle can't touch this stuff we're putting out now.

 Well right now I'm waiting to see the official weight and hp numbers of the Shelby before I make any decisions. If it ends up being 450hp and 3720lbs (like some people are guessing) then I don't want the car. No need to go backwards. My car already makes 500hp and 530lb of torque with only $800 in mods, so Ford will need to come up with something impressive for me to change. If they DO, however, I'll keep you in mind when it's time for me to sell. :sly:

Well for one we don't know what the architecture of that engine will be. To what extent was the 5.4 in the Cobra modified, and to what extent will the engine in the GT500 be. It might be 450, it might be 550. But I doubt they'd make it more powerful than the Cobra, that just wouldn't make sense on Fords or shelby's part. The Shelby has always been their "fastest" car, why make a standard pony faster. And yeah it might be right up there with the Z06 in terms of power, but a vette will always outhandle a stang stock for stock. Not to mention, they wouldn't make a mustang just as fast as their GT either. making a stang faster than the Cobra/GT would just be really stupid buisness moves on Fords part.

I'm think you're getting your cars confused (which is easy with all the names Ford is throwing out right now). The GT500 IS the new SVT Cobra. It has the 5.4L engine. The CURRENT Cobra has a 4.6 supercharged engine which puts out an actual 425hp stock. The 2005 Ford GT (not to be confused with the 2004 Mustang GT) has a 5.4L supercharged engine rated at 550hp, but puts out more according to dyno's.

The Shelby will not be faster than the Ford GT (weight alone will assure that), and it will not be faster than the new Z06. It should be faster than the standard C6 vette though (straight line, not road course).

You know, I'm going to be honest. I've always kind of considered myself a Chevy guy, a current fan of DaimlerChrysler, but this new Ford Mustang is super cool, man. And this 2005 Mustang has really been a cool car that harks back to the muscle car days. This is basically modernized nostalgia at its very core. This car is mad sick. Would I buy one if I had the money and garage space? Maybe. I wouldn't mind an old Shelby GT350, though.

Anyways, I think ever since this new Mustang has been out, I've thought it was extremely killer. And it still is.

First off, I never said SVT Cobra, considering the GT500 is the Shelby Cobra GT500 i would just assume you could put two and two together.
Second there is no Current cobra, stopped production a couple of years back.
Or did you completely forget about this car?
01-12-04-01-Shelby-Cobra.jpg

But none the less I forgot it was a V10 not a V8, but ANYWHO

No one can say that the 5.4L is the same engine as in the Ford GT until it gets announced, and by same engine I mean same head same porting same supercharger. So don't jump out and say it's got "550HP"

What he means by current Cobra is the last SVT Cobra we had, which was the 04' model, which indeed had a 4.6L Supercharged V8.

And dude, that's the Shelby Cobra Concept.

I know what cobra he means man, my neighbor has a 4.6 I'm well aware of what a SVT cobra is. But I never said SVT cobra and he was reffering to my post as if I were, when I said SHELBY cobra, which is what was pictured.

Driftster, Lethalchem, what you guys are saying is basicaly what I was trying to say. But let me go on some more.

For starters, let me explain why I think this car will have at least 500 hp. Before the ford GT the top version of the 5.4 liter modular V8 was a naturaly asperated DOHC unit producing 385 hp. That engine could be found in both the SVT Cobra R, and the SVT Lightning, in identical tune. The new SVT Lightning is getting the same supercharged version of the DOHC 5.4 liter in the Ford GT, that will produce at least 500 hp. So why not the new SVT Cobra?

As you already stated, even with the full 550 hp (which would be sweet) neither the next Cobra or Lightning would ever keep up with the Ford GT. However, What it would keep up with, is it's arch rival returning the same year. The Camaro. I personaly, being a camaro addict, am banking, hoping, praying, etc, that we see a Camaro SS/GTO Judge duo coddling LS7's under the hood. Can you even emagine a 500 hp, Mustang versus Camaro showdown? Unfortunately, giving the Camaro a full blood motor seems to be something GM is afraid to do. Even though none of these MUSCLE CARS would infringe on their respective flagship SUPERCARS, the Z06 and Ford GT.

[EDIT]

Oh yeah, i forgot to say. If the Shelby cobra concept dosen't make production, It's 615 hp supercharged DOHC 6.3 liter V10 would be an excelent parting gift. Especialy nestled behind the passenger compartment of the next Ford GT. ENZO who?

Actually you're a little off there.
-
the SVT Cobra had a 4.6L DOHC modular Aluminum block aluminum headed Supercharged engine making 400 odd HP
-
The SVT cobra R had a 5.4L SOHC Iron Blocked Aluminum headed N/A engine making 300HP
-
the SVT lightning had a 5.4L SOHC iron Blocked Aluminum headed Supercharged engine making 380 HP
-
The Ford GT has a 5.4L DOHC aluminum block aluminum headed Supercharged engine making 500hp

None of the engines were the same, none made the same power

First, the Ford GT is the first car second vehicle to have the Ford 5.4L DOHC engine. The first is the 300HP n/a Navigator. Everything before that was a Triton V8 which is SOHC and iron blocked

Second it IS the new cobra, and no the lightning doesn't keep up with much now-adays so what's your point?

I never said anything about the SVT Cobra. I said the SVT Cobra R.
-
The SVT Cobra R (the one with no back seat) Did not have 300 hp. It had 385.
-
I'll go ahead and say you correct on that one since I'm not exactly sure but I dont think so about the supercharger.
-
550 actualy. While the concept was in circulation they were predicting 500.

You misenterpreted what i said. By new, I was refering to the soon to be realeased, 500 hp Lightning and the new SVT cobra, expected... sometime. Their I changed it for you. "The Next Cobra or Lightning"
