Not much is known about the new Falcon other than it has to be competitive with the new Zeta/VE cars, and that it has a lot to live-up to... Here are some spy shots that have popped-up on the interweb tubes...

...Its still unknown what effect this car will have on the North American market. Ford says they will have a new RWD chassis ready for 2010, but it is unclear if that new platform will be based on the Falcon, or on the Mustang.

I dearly hope that Ford decides to bring that platform over to the states. I think that it could be a huge success. Although their transition to the RWD era is a little late, but who knows. On second thought the last Australian chassis to come over here didn't do to well in sales (GTO aka Monaro, Holden). I guess only time will tell.

Its obviously made to compete with the new Commordore. Why is one side red and the other beige?

Oh wait its 2 cars 💡

That looks like a bloated road blimp. So Ford looks like they are not only going to make the car heavy (like the Commodore) but to look heavy too.

Look how tall the rear door gets, before they even get to the masking. Just like the Commdore and wedged car (lower at the front tappered high upto the rear). Not fond of it, at least for now until I see it unmasked.

These pictures kind of suck. I need to see uncamoflauged shot before I make any judgement.

I'tll be interesting to see the race version, too. the fact that it looks "heavier" could be good for the U.S. market...that could mean this car meets stringent U.S. safety standards...and could be set up for LHD.

I wonder...will Falcon and Mustang be one-in-the-same?

I keep thinking the same thing. Ford says they want an all-new RWD chassis for 2010 (presumably to produce the Interceptor and MKR), but even then, that was all based on the same D2C chassis that the Mustang is already on. However, I don't see why the Aussie chassis shouldn't be co-developed with Ford North America, much like the happenings with GM between Oz and the US.

If they aren't directly connected, it may be best to describe them as cousins in some way. I'm sure that they will share some designs overall, but of course, we can't be completely certain...

For Those Who Want to Rock: Ford Brings Falcon to US?

It appears that Ford has started importing some rear-wheel-drive prototypes from Australia into its U.S. engineering operations. The spies at KGP Photography caught this prototype for the next-generation Australian Ford Falcon at one of Ford's Detroit engineering centers, being unloaded from a shipping container.

The packaging looks consistent with a car that has just made a trip across the ocean–in either a boat or a cargo plane.

The appearance of this rear-wheel-drive prototype seems to support rumors that Ford is looking to Australia for much of its rear-wheel-drive future — a move eerily similar to GM's reliance on Holden to take the engineering lead on the Pontiac G8, Chevy Camaro, and the likely GTO and Impala spin-offs that are due to use GM's Zeta architecture.

Ford's plans appear to be a little less locked-in than GM's, but some pundits say that the 2009-2010 Mustang may share some Aussie DNA. And if a rear-wheel-drive replacement for Ford's Crown Victoria is to come about, it will likely rely heavily on the new Falcon.

On Ford's own media website, Australia's growing importance in Ford's global product plans was touted through a hopeful press release, which said: "An all-new Falcon model and future Territory models will form the basis of potential export opportunities for Ford Australia's globally competitive large rear-wheel drive vehicle platform…. The addition of left-hand drive engineering capability to our product development team will provide significant experience and assist us to develop a viable export program for our world class rear-wheel drive architecture."

Something definitely appears to be stirring in Dearborn, and this Falcon prototype showing up in Detroit looks to be our first sign that things have progressed beyond mere talk.

I figured Ford wouldn't take the G8/Impala sitting down, and this is obviously their shot at not only GM, but Chrysler as well. It looks like a solid early prototype, and at least from what I can tell, it would appear as though this will likely replace the Crown Vic. Furthermore, as the article says, it would make sense for the car to underpin the next Mustang, especially for the IRS and the better, more modern construction.

While I'm actually sad to see the Crown Vic go (I'm still convinced Ford will keep making it for fleet duty) I am extremely excited at the possibility of the Falcon becoming mainstream in the USA. Please god keep the Falcon name and ditch the Five Hundred/Taurus altogether!

Good god Australia has some beautiful saloons (and coupes).

I'll have mine in either the teal or yellow please.

I want them to call it the Fairlane.... But thats just me...

Too late, Taurus is a FWD name, and it will stay that way till the end of time. Call it Fairlane, or Galaxie, or something awesome.

Keep it Falcon and keep it in Australia........... Then again, I'm not sure we really want it..... ;)

But the new model will be a welcome change from the same old ea169 platform, even if it is a balloon on wheels.

"Falcon" is good for me. "Fairlane" and "Galaxie" are bloated old-man's cars to me.

oh, wait, how about "Torino?"

Torino would only work on a full-size coupe, ala Monte Carlo or GTO. If Ford's smart, they'll build one anyway... But with Mullaly at the helm, you never know...

We'll take whatever you don't want. :D How about that?

+1 Unwanted Aussie "trash" is welcome here in America.

Aussie "trash" > America's best

The new G8 is going to sell so well that maybe Ford will do something and bring over some good Aussie stuff.

And if there is a coupe Falcon I could see it in America as the Torino--that would just plain rock.

Wow, that looks quite nice! I agree, I'm sad to see the Crown Vic go, but this might be one of the best cars ford will bring to US in a long time, excluding mustang and ford gt.

What's awsome in that photo has to be the rims...just look how mean they look and how much the whole wheel/tire fills the fenderwell. Mmmmm

What's up with the Aussies gettin all the cool stuff? Even the Ranger looks better over there.:dopey: Anyway, I would hope Ford brings the Falcon over. Their current lineup sucks.

I'm predicting Ford rolls the Falcon out, then stretches the wheel base and sells it as the Crown Vic as well like Holden does with the Commodore to make the Caprice.

...I'm crossing my fingers they give one to Mercury, make it a coupe, and call it the Cougar. That would be a nice touch...

Hmmmm...a REAL Cougar revival? I'm game. And while you are at it...what about...say...one of these:

like Holden does with the Commodore to make the Caprice.

Ford already do that for the Fairlane models (extended wheelbase Falcon) that competes with Statesman/Caprice in the luxury market.

Keep it called a Falcon. Make a more focused, sporty version and call it a Falcon Sprint. Rebody the Sprint in a coupe style and call it a Mustang. Rebody the Mustang in a slightly toned down way, make it more luxurious and badge it as Mercury Cougar. Go back to the Falcon, chop out the rear seats and bulkhead and crop the body into small, sporty pick-up and call it a Ranchero. Oh look, it's 1964 again! - but that's no bad thing.
