And so we reach the 11th race of the 2008 Formula 1 season at the Hungaroring, and it's tighter than ever with Lewis Hamilton leading Felipe Massa by 4 points, with Kimi Raikkonen a further 3 points behind. With four days of testing at Jerez that also included slick-tyres (and a shocking accident), it is impossible to know where each team stands - especially as the two top teams further developed new parts for their cars.

The midfield is still tight as ever: Piquet's podium shot Renault up the standings, and the French outfit is just a point behind engine-sisters Red Bull and two behind the Toyota team. David Coulthard, meanwhile, thinks he'll battle the Toro Rosso cars in his final season, and Toyota revealed the cause of Glock's suspension failure. Ex-Toyota Ralf Schumacher, however, is content with his first points in the DTM.

On the topic of sportscar racing, the FIA GT and F3 series gave us a sneak preview at the Valencia circuit which will be raced in just a month. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.

Great introduction. 👍

I've always enjoyed the Hungarian GP, I'm not sure what it is. I can't wait. This season has been very interesting so far and I don't expect that to change this coming weekend.

Riiight....

I don't really much liked the Hungaroring as much as the other races and I don't hope for the race to be any different (except when it rains ;)) But again, could be another Ferrari - McLaren battle which could go either way. Yeah, not gonna comment much on that and I'll just shut up and wait and see what happens during the weekend.

A little off-topic, but the Valencia street circuit looks quite clean for a street circuit, and the scenery is just.....👍

Hungarian Race, I'd assume? That's the official name in Hungarian for the Hungarian GP... I know from my stamp-collection that "Magyar" means "Hungary".

Magyar means Hungarian and nagydíj means Grand Prix, so Magyar Nagydíj means Hungarian Grand Prix.

Now here's the hard part: How do you pronounce that?

Anyway, I hope this is a good race.

I don't know Hungarian. I thought this thread was some team preview or something...

Hungaroring it is. This is the only other track I know in Hungary other than the Euro-Ring that's been long promised for rFactor, but never released (last I checked). I've never hated Hungaroring. It's kind of like Magny-Cours to me in the sense that I'm not really excited about the track, but I don't hate it. There is a lovely view of a Hungarian village from one of the TV shots. Think it has something to do with World War 2 or something. I'm probably going to get flamed, so I'll leave it at that.

The track itself is still a pretty good challenge. This track is going to test you like at Silverstone. Good luck trying to get through Turn 1 without messing up your car! It has a decent rhythm to it. Seems like you can get some good speed out of certain sections, but your brakes better be ready to take on the well-placed corners. I see three problem areas: Turn 1, Turns 8 and 9, and Turns 14-16. Again, I don't know a lot about this track to say I'm any sort of professional at it.

I have two favorites for this one. Part of me says that Felipe Massa will win, but a bigger prediction for me is Lewis Hamilton finishing P1. Are you hungry for F1 racing in Hungary at the Hungaroring?

OFF-TOPIC That note on what the Valencia street course will be like kind of reminds me... I guess this is going to be the first time FIA GT has ran on a street circuit since the street course at Helsinki, Finland about 11 years ago. My favorite city in Spain is Barcelona. This course has a lovely feel to it. After all, it's a very rich part of Spain. Really seems to have the kind of appeal that would draw a Formula One crowd with Formula One cars.

I'll be looking forward to the Valencia event, but especially the Shanghai race later this year. City known for those merlions (think mermaid lions. I had to do a research paper on lions and included these). I'm a sucker for street courses at night, so this should be just as fun as Valencia.

You mean Singapore. :p

I have this feeling McLaren's all-out efforts to be the best, ever, at aerodynamic design will ultimately help them win this weekend - and perhaps the championship. This season's aerodynamics aren't going to be beaten in the next two-three years, minimum...

I'm hoping for a nice mix-up at this track which is technical and doesn't neccesarily reward 'top speed'. Perhaps Renault and BMW can do well here, that would be great for me. Engine cooling will likely be tested, as well as driver concentration as there is almost always 'steering angle' on the car. Bring on the downforce!

I dont think Brundle will be doing the ITV commentary for this race. I believe he hasn't commentated on this race since 2003 as he always takes his holiday on this Grand Prix weekend. Davidson did it when Button won and Damon 'erm' Hill did it last year. I wouldn't mind him doing it again this year.

Some say Blundell might be in the box with James. I think ill turn the sound down and listen to BBC 5 Live...

For those in North America with Sirius satellite service the race will be on ch. 125. I think the televised broadcast returns to the Speed channel for this race.

What is this race called? Magyar Nagydij? What does THAT mean?
The Hungarian race has always been called "Magyar Nagydij"

I believe each country has the option of naming it's race in English, or their own language hence you have the following in their own languages

  • FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPANA TELEFONICA 2008
  • FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DE MONACO 2008
  • FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DU CANADA 2008
  • FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DE FRANCE 2008
  • FORMULA 1 GROSSER PREIS SANTANDER VON DEUTSCHLAND 2008
  • FORMULA 1 ING MAGYAR NAGYDIJ 2008
  • FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO SANTANDER D'ITALIA 2008
  • FORMULA 1 GRANDE PREMIO DO BRASIL 2008

The only difference is that the others are easier to translate and understand.

Thanks, Metar. I am usually in a hurry posting things, even moderate to long posts. I really did mean Singapore in my previous post. I still have Hamilton or Maasa winning this. Do any of you have any surprise picks to get championship points (8th or better)? Like what if Kubica finished 2nd or Kazuki Nakajima finished 5th? Any surprise picks to get championship points for this race?

The Circuit de València will be as beautiful as you want, but most Valencians don't think the same. For starters, all those neighbours that rented their balconies as most privilegiated seats to watch the race have found themselves against the ironical (and late) prohibition of housing such parties from the Valencian government. Ironical as in, although they say it's for security reasons, due to the old state of those buildings, I bet they don't want anyone else making money out of this. The average 'honestity' of our politicians is pathetic, there's been corruption since always, the course has been built entirely with public funds - But all the profit goes to the several companies (hidden, but known property of those same politicians) that have built it. The final cost has been twice the planned. Where has all that money gone?

Affortunately, I live in Barcelona, and that doesn't affect me as much. ;)

*Ahem* Enough ranting. I only will feel happy if it rains, and there's another race a là Alonso'06.

Hungarian? Magyar Nagydíj Sapoute Difahó Agjasí.
Translation? I don't CENSORED know.

I wouldn't be surprised. Local cops, sadly, are nothing but puppets under their Major's government.

darkfinal, I think you're being very dark indeed. I don't know Catalunya, but I have a nephew that married a girl from Gandesa (sp?), they live here in Portugal, I'm with them often and I never heard (at least from my "niece-in-law" ) things could be that bad over there.

Erhm...Valencia is NOT Catalunya. Valencia is the "Valencia's Community" that includes Valencia, Castellón and Alicante. And yes, here (in Spain in general) some things stink.

Oh, they're not bad at all, there's still a certain degree of law and justice and all that. But corruption and crap is what we get in a democracy that 'evolved' from a dictatorship, made by the same dictators.

I'd say it's more pathetic than dark. :/

Anyway, I believe this thread is named 'Magyar Nagydíj', not 'A tragedy about Spanish politics'. This isn't the place to discuss. :P

Well, I just looked over the results for the past four or five years and Ferrari have always been near the top at this race; but Lewis Hamilton won here last year. So knowing that, it should make for an interesting battle between Ferrari and McLaren.

Uh, they haven't won it since 2004.

McLaren confirms Kovalainen for 2009
31 July 2008

Heikki Kovalainen will also be racing with the McLaren Formula One team in 2009 the team has said. Kovalainen joined Lewis Hamilton at McLaren at the start of this season and scored 28 points so far.

During the team's presentation back in December the team did not reveal for how many seasons Kovalainen joined the team. The team still does not like to confirm if Kovalainen extended his contract or had an ongoing contract but does wish to confirm he will continue to race for the Woking based team. A McLaren spokesman told GPUpdate.net: "I can confirm that Kovalainen will race for us in 2009 but we can't say anything about any contract details."

Kovalainen is currently in his second season in Formula 1. He enjoyed his debut for the Renault F1 team in 2007.

I guess he did a decent job, specially in the last few races, and he's being a good second driver.
