They were fined $100 million US (minus any sucess money they would've received from the FIA/FOA, I forget which, so it was more like $50 million from McLaren themselves), and excluded from the '07 constructors championship. Had their car not passed the FIA examination in time for Melbourne, they would've been excluded from this year's championships as well.

i think massa still has another year on his contract, but when he does leave Ferrari it will be very interesting to see where he ends up. He could possibly take over a Barrichello's seat at Honda. That would be funny

I believe that spin was some sort of mechanical failure; Massa was quoted after the race as saying he had no idea what had happened.

Hmmm ... I was under the impression that McLaren were fined $120 million, had to have this year's car thoroughly examined and were excluded from the '07 and '08 manufacturers titles as punishment for Spygate.

The commentator on my tv programme said that Massa said something about how he hit something or broke something, while it was really clear it was his fault and not others. But yeah, a little hot headed at times.....

As for the McLaren team not scoring point, its a false statement. I mean, yeah it was mentioned a couple of times but if I remember it correctly, they were excluded from the 2007 championship and maybe the 2008 championship if their car didn't pass the check from the FIA (and probably the car would be banned as well)
 
Pretty good race. It was good to see Toyota have a decent finish. BMW looks really good this year. Let ask this I didn't watch qualifying but I heard the commentators on Speed mention that some of the other drivers were driving slow but only McLaren was penalized. Is that true?
 
Yes, but the other drivers weren't on the racing line. Everyone else was well away from the racing line; the McLarens were doing 40mph on the same piece of track that Nick Heidfeld, doing 150mph+, needed to use for his hot lap. Thus Nick had to go off line to avoid them, ruining his lap.
 
A rather dull race. A few awesome overtakes (the Heidfeld/Alonso/don'trememberwho triplet, or Piquet/Nakajima), some nice battles (Alonso/Webber), some extraordinary shows of skill (Trulli, Webber), but a tad dull.

Good drive by Kimi, great drive by Kubica. Overall I think Heikki made the best of a bad situation and Lewis could've done with a little more luck at the pitstop. But at least it makes things closer now.

Mind you, Hamilton's second stop wasn't perfect, either. Took them 10 seconds compared to Kovalainen's 6.5s just two laps earlier...

Fixed. It's the second Ferrari engine failed in that race (Sutil said his 056 leaked, and that this is why he retired), and with at least two failing in Melbourne... :sick:

He was very innocent - Rosberg bumped him from behind, despite the fact that Glock went extra-wide.

Yes, minutes after his spin, on an interview with an RTL commentator, he stated that "something went wrong with the car". Also note that black smoke was rising as he spun...

I was just going by the commentary on F1.com's Live Timing and GP Update as I can't watch the races live ad I'm usually busy come broadcast time (ie asleep).

But the point still stands: Massa's hardware failed on him. Again.

I thought the black smoke was brake dust.

Edit: On second glance it just looks like dust from the front left brake as he slammed them on to stop him spinning.

The problem with his car was that the throttle pedal was pressed too far down.

He did the same in Melbourne too.

I'm in agreement with you... 'daan' also. Smoke looked to be accumulated brake dust dislodged by the jolting. Some drivers have stepped up to meet the challenge of electronics ban, I'm afraid Massa has not.

Even with TC he was making mistakes, remember when he ran wide when Hamilton was chasing him. It seems like it's just the same ol' Massa.

He had solid points in the bag and should have 'cruised', yet he was going 10/10ths like he had something to prove. He's hurt his chances for WCC badly with two DNF's. It's early, and he's contacted through '09, but I bet LDM is musing on possible replacements. Montezemelo is known to be an admirer of the Spaniard's talents.

And out of the choice I&#8217;d take the young(er) one. Ferrari already has the talent to win titles in Kimi, why not bring on the future talent that could bring many years of competitiveness to the Scuderia?
 
Meh, I still have faith in Massa, that spin in Malaysia just looked plain weird. Not gonna deny he's got to have a strong finish in Bahrain though....
 
Hi everyone, who thinks that buemi should get a look in at some point over vettel maybe, he proved himself so well last year in both gp2 and F3 euroseries.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Kubica getting his first win at some point this season, specially now there is no TC.

Welcome! Odds are Kubica & Heidfeld will get a win, They, BMW, could be the spoilers this year I hope. Classy drivers, them, letting their driving do the talking. Congrats to Nick for fastest race lap, and the coup de grace he put on DC & FA.
