A few years back they were nudging 15-20, GT1 is finished now, it's whether it will be replaced by GT2, or a new GT1 class in 2009/10.

Yup. And you also have to consider that there are no newly developed GT1 cars, except the Corvettes, around to take up the torch. All the current cars are ageing and even dying, so some form af change is a must.

What ever happened to the supposed CCGT from Koenigsigg? Did that not even make it past the drawing board or what? And what's going in GT1? I thought it was just dead here in ALMS, but I didn't know it was dying in europe too, especially since the factory efforts aren't there(at least not in FIA GT). Are they that much more expensive to develop then the LMP cars?
 
It would be surprising for LMP cars to be LESS expensive to develop than even the best GT cars. We still need GT cars to offer the production car spice of sportscar racing. Unless you want it all to be prototypes...

What can be done to remedy this?

The CCGT was built and tested, but so far it has never raced, only been shown off at the Goodwood festival of speed. The way it looks now, it won´t race either. No reason to as why has been given, but I suspect that the CCGT simply is too slow.
During the second half of this year, there has been a steady downward spiral in the GT1 fields, both in FIA GT and LMS. Only 3 GT1 cars in the next LMS race (same number as in the ALMS), and even in FIA GT the startinggrid in GT1 is lacking. Just 8 cars entered the last race at Bucharest, 3 being Vettes.

What can be done to remedy this?
LMP cars are more expensive to develop and run than GT1 cars. The simple reason for GT1 lacking, is that they don´t get enough media attention. The overall winners in LMS, ALMS and the 24hrs of Le Mans gets all the attention.
I think Ratels WGTC proposition is a move in the right direction, but for that to work, it needs lots of of TV time at lots of networks.
For the different Le Mans Series, the cars either has to be so fast that they can compete for overall wins, like the did in the mid -90´s, or offer spectacular racing, like GT2 currently do.

Corvette Racing will run a limited schedule in the GT1 class in the first half of the 2009 ALMS season as it prepares for its 10th participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. The team will race in the GT1 class in the season-opening Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the popular Grand Prix of Long Beach. Following its return from the classic 24-hour endurance race in France, Corvette Racing will compete in the GT2 category in selected ALMS events in 2009 in preparation for a full-season program under new international GT class regulations in 2010.

“Corvette Racing will be well positioned for the future of production-based sports car racing worldwide with the plans we are announcing today,” said Steve Wesoloski, GM Racing Road Racing Group manager. “The international regulations are converging around a single, global GT class, and we intend to continue Corvette’s motorsports heritage by racing against manufacturers and marques that Corvette competes with in the marketplace.

“The GT1 class has been a platform for GM Racing and our partners to develop the most technically sophisticated race cars in our history,” Wesoloski said. “We intend to apply the tremendous success we have had in the GT1 category to make the next-generation Corvette C6.R a strong contender in the new GT class.”

Manufacturers currently represented in the ALMS GT2 class or confirmed for future participation include Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, BMW, Ford, Dodge, and Panoz. Other manufacturers produce high-performance cars that could compete in the new GT category.

“In accordance with the regulations, the new version of the Corvette C6.R race car will be available to independent teams,” Wesoloski said. “Corvette and Chevrolet are global brands, and we look forward to seeing production-based Corvette race cars competing in series around the world under the leadership of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).”

The new GT Corvette C6.R race car will be based on the production Corvette’s chassis and body design. A 6.0-liter version of the LS7.R small-block V-8 will power the Corvette GT2 entry in the transitional 2009 season. A new naturally aspirated 5.5-liter version of the production GM small-block V-8 will be developed to meet the new GT regulations that will take effect in 2010. The chassis and powertrain specifications of the new Corvette GT entry will be submitted to the ACO and FIA for homologation approval.

“Competing in GT2 will be a true test of our team’s determination, talent and technology,” said Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing program manager. “The level of competition in the category is already fierce, and that promises to become more intense with more manufacturers and top-tier teams. We’ve explored alternative paths, and we believe that competing in GT is the right road for Corvette Racing to take in the future.

“We will continue our commitment to cellulosic E85R ethanol racing fuel in the current GT1 Corvette C6.R and the next-generation Corvette C6.R that will compete in the new GT class ” Fehan said. “Corvette Racing’s green racing initiative is proof of our commitment to using alternative fuels at the highest levels of motorsports.”

Corvette Racing is America’s premier production sports car team, with 72 wins in 100 races. The most successful team in ALMS history, Corvette Racing has won seven consecutive ALMS GT1 manufacturers and team championships and six straight drivers championships. Corvette Racing has five GT1 victories since 2001 in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“The 2009 season will mark Corvette Racing’s 10th anniversary in international endurance racing, and it will also mark the beginning of a new chapter in Corvette’s racing history,” said Mark Kent, director of GM Racing. “Corvette Racing has consistently delivered tangible engineering and marketing benefits to GM and Chevrolet. Our announcement today of Corvette Racing’s future plans affirms the continuing value of production-based racing as a development tool for advanced technology in powertrain, aerodynamics, lightweight materials, safety, and computer modeling.

“It’s not just high-performance machines like the Corvette Z06 and ZR1 that bear witness to the positive impact of racing,” Kent said. “The lessons learned at Corvette Racing can benefit mainstream production vehicles as GM continues to develop lightweight, aerodynamic, and fuel-efficient cars and trucks.”

Corvette Racing’s next event is Petit Le Mans, the 10th round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series, at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. The 1,000-mile/10-hour race is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m. EDT on Saturday, October 4. SPEED will televise the race live starting at 11 a.m. EDT.

So this pretty much kills any GM prototype plans which is a shame but its nice to know that the Corvettes race on in ALMS in GT2 against Ferrari, Porsche and BMW not to mention Aston Martin, Viper and Panoz.

Some very interesting stuff in there.

The time necessary for wheel changes will be
increased to encourage competitors to use harder tyres.

Wheel changes will be considered as separate from other interventions,
except driver changes, and only two mechanics with a single air gun will
be allowed in the work zone at the same time.

I wonder if the ALMS will follow all of these.
 
I smell Peugeot in that rule (they basically lost Le Mans in the pits, due to longer driverchanges), so if they don´t go to the ALMS, I´m pretty sure they won´t follow that very hard.
On the other hand, it will be that way at Le Mans, so practise is probably a good thing.

I almost forgot the ALMS preview of Petit Le Mans is on right now! I'm glad Speed is offering some attention to something other than oval racing. The Petit Le Mans is still going to be a very pivotal event. Good luck to all teams involved.
 
You may have missed it. I know I saw it live, where they even showed good bits of Night Practice and some very surprising news, one involving the indicment of Helio Castroneaves and his sister for Fraud.

The ALMS preview deal was mostly night practice at Road Atlanta. It could have been some NASCAR special or two episodes of Pinks that I've already seen long ago. But it's great that sportscar racing is getting SOME attention on Speed. Amazing how far we've come in 10 years as far as the Petit Le Mans goes. I even remember watching a highlight show of the inaugural Petit Le Mans featuring my all-time favorite race car- the Ferrari 333SP. The one I've loved most is the Momo Ferrari 333SP.

Speaking of Ferrari, I only hope Risi Competizione can pick up a big win here. I don't think they are in any GT2 championship race, so this race and the finale will be for pride. Win one for Texas, Risi Competizione!

Well, unless I am hanging out on the seats at the turn 10 complex I will be wandering a bit. I have nearly unlimited access to the infield and paddock areas and just watching the race from one position gets old in a 1,000 mile race.

That said, we tend to start out at the beginning of the next to the brake markers (white lines on the track) going into turn 6. We have an infield parking pass, so if you see a guy with a GTP logo on his chest and a silver Mazda6 behind him that will be me.

Other places we like are the seats outside the turn 10 complex and the hill overlooking the front straight. I try Spectator Hill, which overlooks the Esses and turn 5, but it is always crowded and all my pics and videos wind up having people's heads in them. It is the best viewing angle as you can see about 1/4 of the course, but too many people makes it not very fun.

Anyway, my ride is showing up in 30 minutes and I need to shave.

my perdictions

P1: the peugot over the audis
P2: one of the Porsches will win over the acuras
GT1: Jhonny O' will win over the #4 car
GT2: most likely a flying lizard win. although if at all possible i would love to see the LG corvette win the thing.....but thats just me dreaming.
 
Here's my thing... I think back to Le Mans and Sebring. I just wonder if there is some sort of "can't win the big one" for Peugeot. They got a competitive car, but if they don't win Le Mans outright or P1, I just have my doubts that Peugeot could win major races like the ones I mentioned. I'd just like to see my fellow North Americans see the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP win.

It's either going to be Porsche or Acura for P2. Penske is a stacked team. Acura can still make plenty of noise against the glod and red Porsches.

Corvette wins GT1. MAYBE an upset, but Corvette's probably going to win. Maybe even Georgia's own Johnny O'Connell (if he's racing) will win.

GT2 will probably come down to Flying Lizard, Risi Competizione, and even Farnbacher Loles. I'm pulling for the Rosso Scuderia F430 raced by Ferrari F430 GT2, of course.



This is the NASCAR break (since sportscar racing fans aren't as important as NASCAR fans on Speed Channel despite the fact this race is held in the American Southeast). So feel free to access that web feed to get your PLM fix.
 
I'm watching the webstream of the Petit Le Mans. Two things I've noticed... that new Mazda 6 looks wicked! Love that car! Second is that it's nice to see all the tributes to Paul Newman. Another thing I noticed- as many as 20 prototypes in this race as well as a grand total of 36 cars on track. This is almost like some of the earlier Petit Le Mans races as a mix of ALMS and (then) ELMS racers competed at once on this track to the tune of about 39 cars on track. Of course then, there was never really a P2 contingent as well as many more GT1 contenders including the classic Team Oreca Viper GTS-R's.

This is my first time watching a video stream of ALMS competition, but my first time listening to audio from an ALMS race since 2001 (the ALMS race at Texas Motor Speedway in 2001). So it's technically my second time seeing streaming coverage of an ALMS event.
 
The Black Swan Racing Ford GT is in the pits with a lengthy stop. Also, Flying Lizard moved into second in GT2 with Wolf H. behind the wheel.
 
Quick question...I turned on the TV to hear the last second of the announcers saying "watch the ALMS qualifying at Laguna Seca live on speedtv.com, Oct 17!" Is there going to be a qualifying then? I checked on the website but saw nothing, so I'm wondering if I heard it right.
 
Yes! Allen Mcnish wins the Petit Le Mans. Helio castroneves wins in P2, Johnny O'Connell takes GT1, and Mika Salo takes GT2. Alright for Risi!

P1: Didn't happen. Apparently, not even a early morning crash or outright speed can beat the determination of Allen Mcnish.
P2: Three Acuras went out of the race in the most Devastating fashion which left all thee Penske Porsches.
GT1: Yep, Johnny O is the one that gives the C6R its last in in GT1
GT2: They came second to Risi.
