Not really, which is why I question making a fuss of it.

I don't think it matters too much, at least not as much as finding out if the model code of E82 has a suffix to define it as a separate model from the normal coupe - such as E82/2 or E82/S.. thats what I realy want to know ;)

-> I refuse to call this 1er, M1. Why everyone calls this M1!?

-> This is the M1:

:grumpy:

-> I'd call it ///M135i, it pays homage to the old school ///M635Ci. :indiff:

Agreed. What about the concept M1 that we've been seeing in a lot of BMW commercials?

I doubt you've been seeing the M1 Hommage in commercials, I think you are confusing it with the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept that has just been officially confirmed for production today.

Official stuff from Autocar...

BMW has revealed its fastest and most extreme series production 1-series yet: the 335bhp M coupe. It will go on sale in the UK in May after a debut at next month’s Detroit motor show and will be priced at around £38,000, £13,000 cheaper than an M3.

The entry-level M division model will be every bit as fast as the larger and more expensive M3 in standing start acceleration, with a 0-62mph time of just 4.9sec, just 0.1sec slower than the M3. BMW also says the 1-series M coupe will hit 124mph in 17.3sec, on its way to a limited 155mph top speed.

The 1-series M coupé uses the same twin-turbo six-cylinder engine M54 engine, which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, as the recently introduced Z4sDrive35iS – making it the first model from BMW’s M division to boast a standard production powerplant.

While subtle changes to the six-pot’s exhaust system were expected to deliver an increase in power, BMW’s official figures suggest it delivers the same 335bhp at 5900rpm and 332lb ft at 1500rpm as it does in the Z4sDrive35iS.

An overboost function boosts torque for short periods of full throttle acceleration to 369lb ft. By comparison, the M3’s naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 kicks out 414bhp and 295lb ft.

With a claimed kerb weight of 1495kg, the 1-series M coupe will have a power-to-weight ratio of 224bhp per tonne – some 34bhp per tonne less than the 1605kg M3 but 14bhp per tonne more than the 135i coupe.

Also included as part of an enhanced driveline is BMW M division’s electronically operated M differential.

The 1-series M coupe’s chassis has been significantly upgraded from the standard 135i’s, including a 71mm wider track at the front to 1541mm. There is a 46mm increase in track at the rear, up to 1541mm. The ride height has been lowered by 20mm to give the new M-car a more ground-hugging stance.

The brakes have been borrowed from the M3, with 360mm vented and drilled discs up front and 350mm vented and drilled discs at the rear.

The changes to the chassis have necessitated some obvious modifications to the standard 135i’s body, with heavily flared wheel arches. The 1-series M coupé also sports a deep new front bumper with an enlarged centre air intake and what BMW calls air curtains - vertical ducts on the outer edges that help to channel airflow around the front wheel arches and reduce aerodynamic drag.

There are also new air ducts incorporated into the front wings; they are used to extract hot air while reducing air pressure in the engine bay at sustained high speeds. Other changes include unique side sills, new exterior mirror housings, a subtle boot lid spoiler and new rear bumper.

Just three paint colours will be available: Alpine White non-metallic, Sapphire Black metallic and Valencia orange.

Inside the upgrades are subtler, with a set of sports seats, a thick-grip three-spoke M division steering wheel, reworked instrument graphics and a liberal covering of Alcantara

I love it!

Interesting move with using the 35iS engine, it supports the notion that this is a back to basics kind of approach, with all the focus just being on handling, and not outright power numbers.

Can't wait to see it in the flesh!

Given the torque advantage, I'd expect this to be faster than the M3 in generally cut and thrust motoring.

Should be very driftable too as I understand it has the same rear diff as the M3 :)

I was seriously considering a 135i this coming spring, if this is priced reasonably it'll be a no-brainer. I'll have it in white with the red interior, please.

Quoted from the Press Release:

''The front fascia has been designed to get air into the appropriate radiators and also, and a first on a BMW production vehicle, it provides an ‘air curtain’ to reduce the effects of the widened front track.''

BMW-Air-Curtain1.jpg

''The ‘air curtain’ squeezes air passing through openings in the front fascia and directs a high speed stream of air across the side of the front wheels and acts as a curtain to separate the turbulent flow of air from the wheels interrupting the flow of air around the side of the car. This is good use of wind tunnel time and expect to see it utilized more in the future.''

That's quite a clever aerodynamics research... I thought that vent was just for cosmetic purpose, it really is a working aero device!

Yeah, BMW have been talking about an air curtain for some time now. It's their way of improving aerodynamics without resorting to wheel covers, such as those on a car like the original Honda Insight.

From the wrong angle, that rear fender flare makes it look like the rear wheel is trying to escape from the body of the car...

...but this view makes it worth it. 👍

I'd express regret that ///M GmbH didn't do more with the engine, but owners and tuning companies will be more than capable of rectifying that problem. And now the platform is better-suited for more power than ever before.

I'm just glad I didn't win the lottery between the initial release of the 1er coupe and now, or else I'd be kicking myself for not waiting. :dopey:

If they made the roof and the nose at headlight-level a little boxier, I would love this car.

8:12 at the 'ring apparentley

According to BMWBLOG, at (8'12), the 1M is just as fast as the Z4 M Coupe, faster than the E60 M5, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG or the Porsche Cayman S. However, the lap times are still slower than the M3 CSL (7'50) or the M3 E92 (8'05)...

So then where would the 8'12 be on the leaderboard?

84. Donkervoort D8 180R 8:10 151 ´01 240 / 675 Sport Auto
85. Dodge Viper GTS 8:10 151 ´97 457 / 1580 Sport Auto
86. Alpina B6 S 8:10 151 ´08 530 / 1815 sportauto
87. KTM X-Bow 8:10 151 ´08 241 / 871 sportauto
88. Mercedes E63 AMG 8:10.0 151 ´09 525 / 1765 sportauto
89. Porsche Cayman S 8:11 151 ´05 295 / 1406 Walter Roehrl (*mfr.

97. Mercedes C 63 AMG 8:13 150 ´07 457 / 1772 sport auto

Somewhere about the 91st or 92nd place... Interesting.

I wonder if they will do a CSL version which is stripped out and has a carbon fibre roof, that would make its performance pretty epic.

I'm so suprised that something so good has come from such a horrid looking original idea (1 Series Hatchback).

Robin.
