Each year the V8 Supercar circus makes the pilgrimage to the town of Bathurst, a few hours west of Sydney, for the biggest event in Australian motorsport. Held on a 6.2 km stretch of tarmac over Mt. Panorama, this road is one of the most challenging and awe inspiring in the country, known to make grown men cry get things caught in their eye somehow... yeah, that's it. At the moment Craig Lowndes is the man to beat, having won the last four races including the L&H 500 with Mark Skaife last month, it's going to be hard to bet against this duo but Bathurst always throws up some surprises and they have many strong competitors keen to conquer the mountain. This is the...

Big, big weekend of television coverage. For the first time, Sunday's coverage will be broadcast in HD on 7 Mate (yes, Australia does have a TV channel called "Mate", the bogans have taken over), here's the Australian schedule (AEST):
Friday - 1:00-4:00 PM
Saturday - 12:00-5:00 PM
Sunday - 7:00 AM-6:00 PM

Things officially get underway today, with the first of the practice sessions starting at 10:40 AM. Two more sessions will be run at 12:55 PM and 3:05 PM.

Slade fastest in first practice on a drying circuit, leading van Gisbergen and Moffatt.

Steven Richards fastest in second practice, ahead of David Besnard and David Russell.

Nice to see both DJR cars in the top five.

It's been many years since I last watched the 1000 (I've watched no more than 5 of the other events over the years), the bums will keep the v8 series forever rendered as a lower class motorsport, I guess it's our version of Nascar? However I am considering watching it this weekend, I did find it somewhat enjoyable back in the day (The VT years and a couple after) especially the last 10 laps, as people held their breath on if the winner was going to have enough fuel to make it home etc.

Do they still have the Zinger Replay?

Just noticed this is going to clash with F1, and F1 takes priority over Everything, oh well.

Cameron McConville topped the timesheet for practice four with a 2'09.8765, followed by Mark Skaife and Steven Richards.

Tander on provisional pole. It's a shame he's such a pain.

Stellar lap from David Reynolds in the dying moments to get fourth-fastest.

Looks like Cameron and GT are fast around the Mount Panorama. :D --- Randy

Great lap by Reynolds, he and Blanchard could be a real dark horse for sunday, if things go their way.

Happy to see Tander on provisional pole.

I don't know - it's 161 laps. Of all the races on the calendar, Bathurst is probably the one where qualifying position offers the least advantage for the race.

Over the entire race distance qualifying position matters very little, but on the opening lap it's arguably extremely important - nobody wants to get caught up in somebody else's incident off the start/across the mountain with a compressed field. Same deal when it comes to safety cars, as the adage goes "yellows breed yellows".

I just think it's foolish to write off the teams that qualified at the back of the grid (except Denyer/Waters and Fiore/Patrizi) on the basis that they're at the back of the grid.

I like the take in alcohol restrictions for this race - 1 slab (24 cans) full strength beer OR 36 cans mid strength beer OR 1 4 Litre wine cask per person per day. Good luck following the race after all that...

I usually watch the first hour or two then last hour. And if I'm lucky the hours in between but kids often have other ideas...

Lee Holdsworth has been kicked out of the Top 10 Shootout for failing to present his car to scruitineering. Car #33 has thus been given a five-place grid penalty, whilst Will Davison and Luke Youlden have been promoted to the Top 10.

That's a shame for Holdsworth, he's been fast all weekend but rules are rules. Nice effort from Tander there to get provisional pole but it's not over yet, not by a long shot. Kinda forgot it was still only Friday whilst I was watching my recorded coverage tonight.

With the forecast of some sun and spotty showers, Murph's Shootout Lap of the Gods may have nothing to fear today.

By the way, here's a better quality video. ;)

Rated 'E' for EPIC :D

Less than 24 hours now until the first time live airing of The Great Australian Race here in the US on SPEED. In the past, I had to wait until they aired the condensed highlights of the race or watch it online live.

Very happy to see Murphy get pole, he got his lap in at the right time.

Murphy was a lucky man, although I think the remaining drivers still would've had to fight to beat that one if the rain didn't come considering the condition of the track. And even luckier is Davison who initially wasn't even going to take part in the session! But all's not lost for those guy's who got caught out, there's still 1000km to go and it looks to be shaping up to be another thriller.

That Jaguar did a couple of laps of the Adelaide Street Circuit at the Clipsal 500 this year as a tribute to Tom Walkinshaw. It sounded absolutely beautiful and confirmed my belief that no engine sounds greater than a V12. :D
