Rosberg on pole, Schumacher joins him on the front row with Hamilton's penalty!

And Kobayashi third on the grid!
 
Wow, now I can surely say I didn't see that coming.

I'm also now pissed because for the second race of the season I pegged Rosberg to quali P1 on my F1 predictions...the race I forget to predict on and he does it.
 
Nico gets his first ever pole! Congratulations! :cheers::cheers: Over 50 years since Mercedes got a pole, Rosberg broke it! Cheers to Michael for giving it to him as well, he might have been able to do it, but I'm probably being too optimistic being a Schumi fan and all.

Gonna be an exciting race, with both the Mercs on the front row. Though they have often had a slower race pace, so they may not turn front row into a win.
 
So Kobay starts 3rd I gather too...

...Dayum. What exactly were the odds on that top 3?!
 
So with a 5 place grid penalty Lewis will start 7th. Red Bull will be very disappointed, they're starting 6th and 11th.
 
Interesting start tomorrow we have Mercedes (1st, 2nd), Sauber (3rd), Lotus (4th) and McLaren (5th). Reminds me of Belgium 2009 when so many teams had suprising qualifying results.
 
Merc front row, with sauber and lotus (kamui/kimi) on second row... Going to be an interesting race with laptimes this close, that's for sure!

A Kimi win is tough to believe, and seems more of optimism from Kimi fans (not sure if you are one so don't take offense). There is Button, Hamilton, a quick Webber. Kobiyashi is quite fast and starts 3rd as well as Perez being fast and able to fight his way up. Then you have to think about Grosjean if he doesn't get hit as well as the Williams boys who aren't slouches. Oh and Vettel who probably will let his anger help him climb up.

Anything can happen in a race though, luck does become a factor.
 
You know Schumy is going to do everything to try to ruin Nico's pole by turn one. Clean or not clean....

I'd like to say Shumacher has grown up and past that but 2010 told me to go look in a mirror and laugh at myself. Same with 11 so at this point it may happen but Nico seems to be amazing at starts just like his team mate. The Banzai man is who they should watch out for, I dont ever recall watching Kamui start that close to the top.
 
Well done Rosberg. Nobody was even close. Perhaps the cooling conditions really affected the rest of Q3 as a lot of drivers were not going as well as in Q2. Rosberg got in a great lap at a great time.
 
That was probably the closest qualifying session I've ever seen! In Q2, the top 10 were seperated by only 3 tenths of a second which is fantastic! Well done to Nico for his first pole and of course Mercedes AMG Petronas for securing the front row of the grid despite Hamilton revceiving his 5 place grid penalty for changing his faulty gearbox. Sauber isn't doing all that bad either, best of all the Ferrri powered cars and even better than the factory Ferrari. Quite an encouraging performance by them and looking forward to see what they can do in the race.

A disaster meanwhile for Vettel. That was the first time he has been out of Q3 since Brazil 2009 I think? I am not sure what went wrong there, using the A-Spec exhaust or using a used soft tyres, I am not sure but he was off the pace all day long. Anyhow, he has got to Kung-Fu his way up the grid tomorrow!

Exciting race in prospect, I can't wait for tomorrow!
 
Just watched the sky sports live stream.. 👍 Great quali, too bad Kimi couldn't get more out of the car. This year is definetly amazing to watch, it constantly depends on the hundrethts.

And what a lap from Mini-Keke, and also Koba!

No. I don't think I can be labeled as a Kimi fan. I like him a whole lot better than many of the other drivers though and my reasoning for him winning is that the Mercs are only so so when it comes to race pace and that Kobayashi will almost certainly buckle a bit. Button and Webber are the main rivals of course (Hamilton is too far back at the start.) but I would very much prefer a Räikkönen win if I had to choose. Not because I dislike Button and Webber but because I like the underdog.

But most of all I would like to see Alonso drive a world class race to take another victory of course. :sly:

Top 11 separated by 0.232 in Q2. It does not get any closer.

And yeah, both Sauber's out-qualified both Ferrari's. 👍
 
I'm very happy to see Rosberg get his maiden F1 pole! Hopefully Mercedes' position can translate into some decent points this time around. They certainly need it.
 
From a German point of view, this has been an excellent session - really excited about the race now, "the chin" shall make it happen. :p
