MASCAR should have retired the number 3. The fact that it is a sensitive subject states the importance of it.

MASCAR? What about NASCAR though, should they retire it? ;) :p

I think the shadow of the 3 has to pass. 13 years have passed, like someone said, if Dale jnr doesn't take it why not someone else? Perhaps with Jnr's blessing?

If I am not mistaken NASCAR does not own the number, RCR does, and I agree...if the 43 is not retired the 3 shouldn't be. Also agree that people need to get over it.

RCR owns the font style of the number.
While NASCAR can give out the number, there is an agreement among all current owners that the number is more or less RCR's, so they do not request the number and will request a different number if assigned by NASCAR.
All numbers are assigned every season by NASCAR, they must be requested when filling out entry forms through the off-season. This is why TBR runs the 7 without having to exchange it with Robby Gordon for money.

Wait...so the significance of a driver dying during the biggest race of the year on the circuit is now compared to a funny hat wearing man that will die of old age (natural causes) and has passed off the number to many drivers and degraded it to a back marker that anyone could catapult into -Andretti should have never driven in it- and has only now become something respectable again.

So basically, a driver dying during a race in a number that hold the most significance to his legacy shouldn't or can't be retired. And it can't be due to the fact that another 7 time (the only other) driver is bound to die one day, and no one is trying to retire his number as well...?

Petty had the opportunity to retire his own number, but I think he preferred to see it race, no matter how bad it was. He could have been like Childress and bought it every year but never field it.

The number and font are sacred. The number itself though doesn't have as much meaning to me as other cars have carried the #3 before Earnhardt.

The point is, death isn't a requirement for retiring a number.

In NASCAR it is, so far at least. 61, retired in Modifieds because of Richie Evans, who died in a racing accident. 3, psuedo-retired in NASCAR because of Dale Earnhardt, who died in a racing accident.

Yes that's true, but the significance of those prior drivers aren't the same. Just like how teams in other sports retire a certain number due to the player that held it and significant events that made it worthy of retirement. Not sure why there is an issue with it being put away.

Honestly the 43 is run because Petty wants it to be, that's the only reason. It wouldn't be used by someone else other than that team if he does pass which I have a feeling when he does things will change with the number being used.

The 3 falls in the same boat or even more so, it might be used but chances are highly unlikely I think just because it's more Dale's number. It's just one of those things that yes we need to move on past the death but let's not let someone take over that number either.

I'm not really a fan of Dale but his number should be only used by him.

It's not even "his" number. It belongs to Richard Childress. Alan Kulwicki owned his own team, and his car number 7, and died as the defending Winston Cup Champion. The number 7 car kept racing even after the owner/driver/champion had died. It happens. If Childress wants to put his own grandson in the 3 car, he should do it. It's his number.

I unaware that Kyle had won the nationwide race today... And another nail gets driven in the NNS coffin. Why would, anyone (owner) want to even bother trying to compete in this series against the big boys who come down every week and kick sand in their faces. I have never, ever agreed with allowing the full time Cup drivers to race in Nationwide. If NASCAR thinks this is helping them they're delusional.

It's all about the money. The big stars come down to make more money, and the NNS teams make some off of that if they can compete.

Like the 3 deal, I can't bring myself to pull for either side.

Nevermind the last 12 years this has happened, with Cup drivers doing Full seasons might I add.

Also, lets get something out of the way: Cup Drivers in Nationwide or Trucks happen for the same reason Danica was signed to SHR and why (somewhat) Harvick is coming over and Menard is staying with RCR: Money.

Weren't the trucks at Charlotte this weekend? Why not? Wow, the season has been shortened THAT much? Hmm, how come? Really, people are that disinterested in trucks? I know they used to race a lot more races.

If NNS becomes devoid of Cup drivers, the series will dry up like a zit and become ARCA. At least NASCAR is aware of the imbalance and no longer allows a driver to compete for multiple championships.

Trucks were last week on a Friday (you know, Allstar race and all that jazz).
