For those mentioning that the catch fence failed, you can see from this picture that the car didn't pierce the regular fence, but the crossover gate fence. I would imagine that the crossover fencing isn't quite as strong as the rest of the catch fencing around the track. I mean, the odds of the car getting airborne into the fencing at that exact spot have to be very unlikely. It was just a freak accident. I assume Nascar, as well as the other motorsports, will look at ways to strengthen the fencing of crossover gates at all tracks after this. I think I read that for the race tomorrow, they are replacing the fencing in that area with regular fencing, not the crossover type.

I hope all the fans involved survive and recover.

Just waiting for NASCAR to get sued for $500 million dollars by a ridiculous person.

The comments on speed.com are even worse than an average day in this thread. I feel stupider just by reading them.

Well every NASCAR event ticket has a "debris may fly out of track boundaries, we're not liable, blah, blah" on the back.

Any website that allows comments really. Anytime I read an article on any site, or a posting on facebook, I worry about the human race. :nervous:

Wow. That was crazy. I had to leave with 10 laps to go. Having only just started to watch Nascar, I thought the crash at turns one and two with five laps to go was bad. Eleven cars piled into each other and up into the wall at the top of the banking. It looked nasty, luckily no one was injured and the race was able to continue after the red flag.

Then the final lap incident. I had my face in my hands when that happened. As soon as the car went into the catch fencing I thought that was it, surely someone's going to get it bad here. Does anybody know of the condition of the driver involved?

What's the total number of fans injured? Over 30 I'm hearing. I hope everyone that was unfortunate enough to become involved in this makes a full and speedy recovery. The women who just missed that tyre landing on her is extremely lucky. The other fans that were helping her out and shouting for the medics are great too.

Wasn't there a couple people injured in a rally race last week?

I haven't heard anything about injuries last week

A rally in ireland (I think) some spectators were killed.

A woman was killed in the Snowman Rally in Scotland last week, whilst spectating.

I watch whatever I want. Im allowed my views. Same for you and others. Just because mine our different doesnt mean they are wrong.

Doesn't mean yours is valid, either. Particularly if you're painting an accident as an intentional, sanctioned-by-NASCAR attempt to cause a crash to gain an advantage because "from your view" that's what it was.

Maybe, but I do remember Edwards offered to give tickets and have a meet and great for anybody injured. I doubt any of the rednecks who typically sit that low at Dega would jeopardize that opportunity.

I knew something was going to happen in the last lap, that was scary, my thoughts and prayers go out to all of the fans that were affected.

Maybe. Anyone know if there were any law suits after the Carl Edwards incident at Talladega?

Did anything serious result from that? I remember it but only really started watching NASCAR a few years ago..

A teenage girl had a broken jaw due to debris flying into the stands, but I think that was the extent of it.

Carl invited her to a race as his guest later.. I think it was the very next Talladega race.

How is that ridiculous? Not the 500m part but suing in general. People get millions for spilling hot coffee on themselves. If a catch fence failed and I got a connecting rod in my face Im suing.

Catch fencing sucks. It needs a replacement or to be overhauled in someway.

Either that or Daytona can imitate more modern ovals and have a safe distance between the cars and the stands. I realize the tire probably did the most damage, but many injuries could have been prevented if nobody was standing where the engine and other parts ended up.

Off topic but still should be said:
What is the difference between a dead lawyer on the road and a dead snake on the road?
There are skid marks in front of the snake.

Its ridiculous because even if there is a liability clause on the ticket there will still be a lawsuit because people love to chase money and the fact that the US has TOO many lawyers doesn't help matters.

When you attend a race, you assume the risk of flying debris in the stands. That is what the fine print is for. Don't want to get hit, sit further away. It's like entering a track day with your own car. You sign a waver that says if you kill yourself it's not the tracks fault. You basically sign the same waver when you purchase that ticket.

Exactly. It's no different than getting nailed by a screeching foul ball in baseball or taking a direct hit from a hockey puck. There are always risks involved, and they are stated on the ticket. I can't stand the constant lawsuits nowadays. So much greed.

Just saw a raw vid of the crash from a fans seat. Over to the left of him you can see the tire sitting there...

Man, all I can say is.. DAMN, I missed a lot after I left for work! Wow.. my prayers out to all involved.

This will be a iffy subject but if you get hit by something then you might be on your own insurance wise for medical cost. Yes it is your risk but it's also track/nascar's responability to try to keep everyone safe if something like this happens.

It's weird that all the wrecks at Daytona in recent years, nothing like this has happened. I'm curious exactly how the fence ripped open like that because it's a pretty tough piece(s) of metal/wire to tear through. It's been mentioned for years try to co come up with a better fence that wouldn't have issues like this for drivers or fans but without putting up some sort of plexiglass on the inside that if did break could cause as much or more damage with shards going everywhere (but something like the NHL uses might withstand the impact or could sandwich it between 2 fences to keep it from being broken or ripped off as easy).

First and foremost, I understand that I'm going to hell.
Secondly, I hope all involved are actually okay.
Thirdly, be forewarned this video has foul language
Having said that... this is the first thing I thought when I saw the tire fly over(through?) the fence and land in the stands:

All I can think of is
"Don't worry guys, I saw Lightning McQueen do this!" - 1:03-1:06

And finally... for those conspiracy lovers, here's some Illuminati propaganda for you:

Take careful note of the 1st and 2nd place cars creating the wreck, a loose tiring flying through the air, directly at the camera and the 'viewer', followed by the 33 car (I know, 1 number off, sorry) flying through the air!

In light of what happened, it's still raceday for the Daytona 500. The Great American Race. In all honesty I am betting on Kenseth taking home the honours.

Motorsport can be dangerous, for drivers and spectators. Freak accidents will happen. Whilst spectating at Rallys is how it is, I don't think NASCAR has a thing to worry about.

As for the 500. I've got my fingers crossed for Montoya... :D

Well, there aren't any jet dryers this year. :sly:

Allmendinger isn't racing so I really don't care who wins as long as it isn't Kyle Busch or Johnson.

Seriously, please tell me this is just a joke.
