2013 NASCAR Thread

I've been a Mark Martin fan since I started following NASCAR but ever since hes gone into semi retirement I just watch the races for entertainment without any real favorite. It felt weird at first not having someone to cheer for but I got use to it in time.
 
I was a Mayfield fan until, well...you know the story. :ouch: I enjoy rooting for an underdog who has the potential to be a really good driver. After Mayfield's suspension, I didn't have a favorite driver for a few years; still don't really. Whoever I happened to have on my fantasy team any particular week would be who I would root for.

Last year I gave the thought to picking a new favorite driver. That guy was A.J. Allmendinger. Then, naturally, he got suspended, just like my previous favorite. I guess I still root for him though. That win at Road America was pretty fun to watch. And at the beginning of this year, I considered making Stenhouse my favorite, as I met him when he happened to be signing at a Sam's Club in the Cincinnati area last year the week of the Kentucky race. He seemed like a nice guy. Then I found out about the whole dating Danica circus. I didn't feel like dealing with that nonsense. :sick:

So in a nutshell, I have crappy luck when picking a favorite driver (though I became a Mayfield fan in '97, so I guess I did have some good times watching him win occasionally, especially Richmond).

Here's an idea. If you guys want anyone in particular to be suspended for drug use, just let me know. I'll make sure to start rooting for him (or her). :lol:

The bad part is AJ is a great guy and I think really just had the pressure get to him. He didn't fit well in the 22 and it showed but now look at how he has done this year overall! Glad to see him get a win.
 
I've never been a fan of sprint cars not because they aren't fun to watch but how many get hurt it seems. His number has been called a few times and got lucky but that ran out.

I could see Fellows getting the ride, the good thing is they have time to fit a seat for someone.
 
I've got to believe that Tony Stewart probably fields one of the safest Sprint Cars in the country, because he has the nearly unlimited funds necessary (relative to most Sprint Car drivers' budgets) to fabricate such a safe car.

If that accident broke Tony's leg, it makes you wonder if it might have killed a lesser-funded driver that had just enough money to put a car on the track, but not enough invested to make it much safer.

Tony might have been upset with reporters asking him why he still does this on the side with the obvious potential danger involved, but he is going to be really upset when his sponsors start asking about why his side habit is costing them their primary driver for a Sprint Cup event.
 
As far as a replacement for Tony at the Glen.. Boris Said? :lol: Him and Tony have a great history! In all seriousness, how about Ron Fellows? He might have Corvette commitments though as ALMS is at Road America that weekend and he is usually found hanging around the paddock with Fehan and the guys.. Dare I suggest Kyle Larson? Justin Marks? Austin Dillion? Regan Smith? Hell, Piquet Jr?
 
Although I highly doubt it, it would be cool to see Dillon race. ^^^

That won't happen though since Dillon is racing with RCR next season.
 
Both Boris Said and Ron Fellows are scheduled to compete in the Watkins Glen race. Boris is in the 32, and Ron is in the 33.

Of course, that could change if Stewart-Haas were to pick one of them.

Edit: I'd say AJ Allmendinger is a good possibility to take the seat while Tony is out. It's better for the team to pick a driver that could be in the car each week instead of picking on a weekly basis.

Fellows in 33 Circle Sport car (normally Cassill's ride)
Said in 32 (shared by Schrader, Terry Labonte, Timmy Hill)

Now Bobby Labonte and Allmendinger keep swapping seats, but weren't Phoenix stopping operations? If so that leaves Allmendinger out a ride. So he is best bet I reckon.
 
AJ races for Penske in Nationwide, but has been driving the Phoenix Racing #51, which has ties to Hendrick, which also has ties to Stewart-Haas because of Hendrick.

The only other driver that has a similar connection would be Regan Smith.

Either of those would be best choice.

They really need to do something to make Sprint Cars safer. There's been too many deaths and injuries this season.

Don't think that's possible. Drivers know the risks they take when driving a race car, especially a sprint car. Can't really blame anyone/anything.

And Smith has also driven for Phoenix this season.
 
I don't know about airbags, but they could put some Indycar safety tech into the cars. Something to help protect the drivers more.

And not those silly "wheel protectors" that the Indycars have on the rear.
 
Lewis Hamilton perhaps? He's driven the 14 at Watkins Glen before, plus he has the weekend off. :lol:
 
What about Johnny O'Connell? Other then being a commentator, he's got nothing else to do :lol:
