With everyone having played 2 games, here's round 2 as it stands...

Groups A & B will be decided tomorrow (confirming games 1 and 5), groups C & D on Tuesday (confirming games 2 and 6), groups E & F on Wednesday (confirming games 3 and 7) and finally groups G & H on Friday (confirming games 4 & 8). Then we all have a day off before the 2nd round gets underway...
 
20/20 Portugal played with 10 men the full 90 except the 94th minute. Varela should have started on the left, and I hope starts on Thursday. Otherwise I will want USA to go deep.
 
Well even with the late goal conceded, USA played a hell of a game, and I have confidence we can at least draw with Germany. Ghana needs to do us favors though and hold Portugal to a draw too.

I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle. You need Portugal to do you a favour if Germany play to win on Thursday.

From the first four matches in group G, it looks to me like Germany and Ghana are the class of the group. USA and Portugal look like mediocre limited sides. Ghana, however, isn't in a great spot; they need to finish their chances against Portugal and they need help from Germany in the last set of matches. Would be a shame if they went out as they play good lively football in a tournament where more than a few average sides will advance.
 
@SagarisGTB: Actually USA does itself a favor if they draw with Germany. Because with a draw, Portugal and Ghana have no chance of advancing out of group even if both teams win. For Portugal, they need us to lose by at least one goal, and beat Ghana by three goals. And honestly, I can see Germany beating us by one, but not see Portugal nor Ghana beat each other by enough to leap frog USA in the standings.

And I can't buy Ghana being on the same level of class as Germany. Portugal are mediocre on merely being underachievers, but USA is mediocre just on talent alone. But there's a reason why a mediocre team like USA and a "class" side like Ghana is looking up at us in the standings and you alluded to it: Because we took our chances and we made them. Then again, if a team is looking the part to advance out of group, then they aren't exactly mediocre are they? Though America did stumble at the wrong moment, they don't have to panic.

That said, I'm glad the so-so sides are giving the traditional stalwarts fits and troubles. It's about time more nations start challenging for the overall glory for real. I'm getting tired of a European or some South American team take the crown.

I stipulated "if Germany play to win" in my post because it could well serve both teams to draw: Germany advance in first place and USA advance to most likely face the uninspiring Belgians. That's what I feel is most likely to happen.

But if Germany plays normally and go for the win for the sake of momentum or whatever other reason, USA could be in trouble. If the US lose by a single goal, Ghana need to win by two (or more) or score two more goals on the day than USA. So if Germany wins 1-0 and Ghana wins 2-1, USA would be eliminated. And that's not an entirely unrealistic scenario if Loew and Klinsmann don't get together for a pint and agree on a secret pact.

And especially not applicable in my office, where the boss put a flatscreen in a few months ago in preparation for the World Cup... luckily for him he's not English :lol:
 
Holland v Chile and Australia v Spain on now, no RVP for the Dutch because he picked up a second yellow v the Aussies so he gets a one game ban Lens takes his place and they are finally playing in Orange! Chile have made a few changes too

Spain have made a few changes, Cazorla, Villa and Torres in attack, Reina in goal, Juanfran and Albiol in defence, Koke in midfield..
 
As individuals, it is clear that Spain are better, but the teams are quite equal right now.
